    1. [NFLD-LAB] Applin, Humber, Pynn, Coombs
    2. Gallant Applin
    3. I'm looking for anyone that might have information to share about the Applin family from the Northern Pen. (Gooseberry Island, Flower's Cove, Shoal Cove). I am trying to figure out the early generations to determine how they link to my grandmother Emily nee Applin Gallant. Emily was the daughter of Thomas Henry Applin and Mary Pynn (parents unknown). They married in March 1900. Thomas died in 1905 in Anchor point. He might have been living nearby that area. He was 26 yrs old. Mary remarried John (Jack) Humber, son of William Humber and Mary Ann Genge. Thomas was the son of Joseph Applin and Jane Coombs. Joseph Applin had a brother named John who married Mary Ann Wells. They lived in Labrador before moving to NL. I have been researching this family for a while now and am hoping that someone has even the smallest tidbit to help me out. 1. [NFLD-LAB] REPLY from lghr re: 1943 note of F.F.Jardine, Bell Island ref: Skane and Hiscock
    2. Lloyd Rowsell
    3. REPLY: Nice to hear from you and here is the quote from the article mentioned above, good luck with your quest. As a 'Newfoundlander by birth and soul " I have derived much pleasure from this hobby and am thankful for having these photocopies from the year 1943 and echo the words of F.F.Jardine " I love and am deeply interested in every scrap and shred of this Colony's history. And I have a right to be." Sincerely, Lloyd "I think the Earles of Portugal Cove were relatives of the Pitts, because John Pitts, the elder of the Pitts of Bell Island fame, used to visit the Earles in Portugal Cove, and it was in Portugal Cove, John Pitts met his wife, Mrs. George Hiscock, the widow of George Hiscock, a planter of Portugal Cove, but an Englishman. As to John Earle or anybody else living on Bell Island before Gregory Normore came as first permanent settler is not correct. It is true that a brave Irishman, Patrick English, 1690, tried 3 times to make a home for himself on the south west side of Bell Island, a little below what is now called Lance Cove. He was driven off 3 times and then gave it up and later settled at Ochre Pit Cove. When Gregory Normore, who had married Ann White of Carbonear, became the first permanent settler on Bell Island Beach, to be followed by John Skane and John Bennett, there was not a vestige of any sign of any habitation before that, save the old fireplace of Patrick English. You can see traces of it today if you kick up the sod on the brow of the cliffside. Gregory Normore came to Bell Island in 1741, a Jerseyman. I think you did a real service by publishing this lecture of the Rev. Mr. Blackmore. I love and am deeply interested in every scrap and shred of this Colony's history. And I have a right to be. Though of immediate Scots descent on the Paternal side, on the distaff side I can trace back to Kirke's colony at Ferryland. John Kearney, my forbear was one of the brave colonists who came out with Sir David Kirke in 1658 or 1659, from Roscommon, Ireland." end quote --- Martha Hershenson <mhershenson@enc.k12.il.us> wrote: > I am interested in the Hiscock and Skane names mentioned below. > > My great great grandparents were Bridget "Skeins" born in > Newfoundland > 1819 and Edward Herring/Hearn also born Newfoundland in 1820. > Married > Catholic church in St. Johns in 1843. 2. Maureen Thoms
    3. I had the pleasure of visiting this home twice in one day on August 26th, 2003. As far as I know the Brett home was built for John and Julia Brett in the late 1800's and later owned by their son Charles and Mathilda Brett nee Boone. The inside of the house has all original furniture and the beautiful hooked rugs on display were awesome. It's a "must see" home for anyone visiting Fogo Island. It's culture and heritage at its finest in Joe Batts Arm! Maureen Thoms Boyd's Cove, NL Researching: HIGGINS, DONOGHUE, NEWMAN of Joe Batts Arm, Newfoundland

    1. [NFLD-LAB] Genealogy-related TV show
    2. This may be slightly off-topic, but there's a new 8-part series from Britain called "Antiques Ghostshow" that started on Bravo last week. It runs on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m.(EDT) Sorry if you're seeing a duplicate copy of this email as I've sent it to a few Canadian lists I'm on. The programme features a psychic, an historian and a genealogist. In one segment of the first show, a fellow had brought in a model ship built by an ancestor in the late 1800s. The psychic "did his thing" and came up with all sorts of information on the ancestor. Then the historian and genealogist researched what the psychic had said and reported back with their findings. It was really quite fascinating! Oh to be able to hand over an ancestor's pocketbook that I have from the 1700s and get some help with my brick walls! Maybe if enough of us watch, the producers will come over and tap into *our* heirlooms. Sally

    1. [NFLD-LAB] William 'Bill' Russell Bay Roberts to Washington State abt. 1899
    2. Lloyd Rowsell
    3. Greetings Bill, As you probably know by now, Country Path was once known as the main road leading from Mercer's Cove, Bay Roberts East into the Woods to the West. Today it extends from the old railway bed at the west end to the east accross the CB or Brigus Road, at an intersection beside Powell's supermarket, where the road continues to the east, and from that point the road is now called Water Street, Bay Roberts. Yesterday afternoon, at Victoria B.C., I was given a Studio photograph of a well dressed handsome man age abt. 25 yrs. The photo was made, I would guess, about 1900. The man b. 1918, who possessed the photo, suggested that it could be that of William 'Bill' Russell who accompanied his father from the Bay Roberts area to the West Coast in the late 1800's. Father Thomas worked with Bill Russell, for a short time, in the forestry industry of Northern Washington State, USA. Father Thomas returned to CB, NL for a period of time and regretted all his life that he lost contact with his 'good friend', Bill Russell. I am wondering if you have any suggestions about the possible identity of the photograph. Any response is appreciated. Archaeologists have > discovered several shipwrecks from the period of 1550- 1600 when this was > the world whaling capital, supplying Europe with oil for lamps and soap. > > > Archaeologists have uncovered an astounding number of tools and personal > effects that confirm European habitation of this coast during the 16th and > 17th centuries. Many of these are now conserved in the Interpretation > Centre. Self-guided tours of nearby Saddle Island, where the main station > was located, are available during the summer months. > > From Red Bay you can now drive north to Mary's Harbour, Port Hope Simpson, > Charlottetown and Cartwright, which is 323 km north of Red Bay. > > People who live in communities and were linked to the outside world only by > coastal boat, aircraft, snowmobile or ATV are now getting used to driving to > larger centres to shop, and are seeing more visitors, explorers who want to > see what is essentially virgin tourist territory. > > Battle Harbour was a fishing port as early as the 1750s, and was one of the > first European settlements along the coast. In the 19th and 20th centuries > it was a major centre for the floater fishery from Newfoundland, and in 1893 > Dr. Wilfred Grenfell had established his first Labrador hospital here. > > > Many of Battle Harbour's old commercial and public buildings survived the > fire, and in the 1990s a major restoration program helped preserve what is > the most intact fishery outport in the province. The modernization that > swept Newfoundland and Labrador in the decades after Confederation in 1949 > bypassed Battle Harbour and so left a priceless built heritage virtually > intact. Just up the coast is Mary's Harbour, which has > grown to a major centre this century. > > > Nearby Battle Harbour has been fished since at least 1759 and is one of the > oldest European settlements on the Labrador coast. In > 1893 Dr. Wilfred Grenfell established his first hospital here to serve > people on the coast, and in 1905 the first lighthouse in Labrador was > constructed on nearby Double Island.
