October 24, 2003 CANT, Leila Christine - Dec. 10, 1911 (Brighton, England) - Oct. 19, 2003 (White Rock, B.C.) The circle of life is complete for Mom. She had a wonderful life and, at 91, she had a spirit which never diminished although her body eventually failed. She passed away in the warm and loving atmosphere of home, comforted and enveloped by her family. In 1939, after nursing and midwifery training, Mom`s adventurous spirit led her from home in Brighton, England to a position in the outpost nursing stations at Cow Head and Rose Blanche, in the colony of Newfoundland. A meeting with Dr. Donald Cant in Stephenville led to romance and marriage. He, had completed medical training in Yorkshire and independently ventured overseas to become Medical Officer on the `Lady Anderson`, a hospital ship providing medical care to the isolated communities of the South Coast of Newfoundland. They married in 1942 in Halifax. During the war, Mom returned to England where first son John was born there whil! e, Don served with the Canadian forces in Europe. With the return of peace, they returned to Newfoundland. The family grew with Jim born in Harbour Breton, then twins, Jennifer and Elizabeth, and finally Daphne all born in Corner Brook. Throughout the years, Mom devoted herself to her family, as well as to the community with hospital auxiliary and other volunteer work. Mom freely accepted criticism of her bread making skills but she was the queen of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding! Mom had an optimistic and positive nature- with a sherry glass never "half empty", but always "half full". Even after losing Don in 1996 and suffering the decline of old age, she vigorously maintained as much independence and contribution to the family as she possibly could. Mom always said she was lucky to have such a loving family, but we all know it was her warmth, selflessness and example that made it so. She has been the family matriarch, the hub around which we all have gathered for so long! . It has been a sad goodbye, but she has left us a legacy of close-knit and supportive family bonds, and high standards that we will strive to maintain. A memorial event will be held at 12967 21 A Ave. in Surrey, BC on Nov. 23, 2003 from 2 to 5 p.m. October 24, 2003 DOWNTON, Joan V. - Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on October 22, 2003, Joan V. 3. My I respectfully suggest that people who are overloaded subscribe to the digest form, as I do. The whole purpose of the list is to share information - information that may prove to be of interest to me. (i.e., someone askes about Fred Jones birthday and the answer is Jan 14 1834 and he married Hilda Kraut on Feb 17, 1861.) The original question may be of limited value but the response suddenly ties deep into my own family. I do wish data passing to take place in public view when possible. The digest makes this quite possible. 3. Good morning listers, I am still seeking information about the APPLIN family once again. I have been seeking information for over a year now with few leads. I still have no confirmation about my grandmother's mothers name, although we know she was a PYNN or PAYNE from Quirpon area. I'm not including information in this email as I have posted info in the past and for fear of being too repetitious. However, please contact me if you would like more info. If someone has come across this name in their research, please share with me. Research names Applin, Humber, Coombs, Pynn or Payne, Gallant, Drugget, Boissel, Marche. tks Cindy

    1. [NFLD-LAB] Lots of Newfoundlanders
    2. Just had a quick look through the Canadian 1901 Census for Sydney, Cape Breton. Sydney changed from "a sleepy little village" to a town with a population of about 25,000 when many came to work at the newly opened steel plant the opened at the turn of the century. Many came for a few more years. My relatives didn't get to Sydney until 1913. In Sydney - specifically a section called the Pier - lived many Newfoundlanders as well as many other new arrivals who came from around the world seeking employment at the new plant. Places in the Pier are found in the census pages as noted below. There are 48 pages. There may be a the odd page without Newfoundlanders but most pages contain quite a few. You find more people from Newfoundland if you start at the last page and work up from page 48. If you do a search on the Canadian Archives site: http://www.archives.ca/02/02012202_e.html click Nova Scotia and search using Sydney. The one you want should be item # 18 or Province/Territory: Nova Scotia District Name: CAPE BRETON District Number: 28 Sub-district Name: Sydney (Town/Ville) Sub-district Number: z-5 Schedule: 1 Reference: RG31 , Statistics Canada Microfilm Reel Number: T-6448 Finding Aid Number: 31-40 Jeri

    3. I'm looking for help with this individual. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William Jackson could very well be William Albert Jackson. He also could have used the name Billy Bill or any other variant of the name William. Born somewhere in Newfoundland possibly around the year 1888 but that could be way off. He may have been a fisherman because he was in Lunenburg Nova Scotia around the year 1905 and there's no record anywhere of him. He was involved with my grandmother around this time. Please if you have any information contact me directly at lolly88@yahoo.com . Thanks Flo --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Exclusive Video Premiere - Britney Spears
