    3. TWIMC First, I would like to thank who ever turned us onto the url for the 1901 Cencus. In peruseing this document, I came upon the following entres and thought it might be of interest. 1901 Cencus Halifax A5 29 for the HeadSheit Blind Institute, and the following are Newfoundland Born. Donovan, Minnie b may 1885 RC imigrated to NS 1891 Bursey, Edgar b mar 1882 meth imigrated 1891 Morgan, Agustus b jun 1884 ce imigrated 1894 Anthony, Harry b sep 1884 ce imigrated 1894 McCarthy, James b mar 1886 rc imigrated 1894 Shirley, William b aug 1891 rc imigrated 1894 Fitzgerald, ----- b sep 1883 rc imigrated 1895 Byrne, James b jul 1891 rc imigrated 1895 At first I thought this was a orphanage, there were about 100 children being schooled at this establishment. It reminded me of the easy which family members go astray. These children would not be registered at their birth home in Newfoundland, and in our research it is possible to assume they had died. Also I was suprised at the number (hundreds) of young wemon that had left Newfoundland to become domistics in NS families, and in time would marry there.Again in Newfoundland they would most likely not be counted in the 1901 Cencus of their home towns of Newfoundland. It would be a massive under taking to glean all these strays from the NS Cencus, much less all thro out Canada. And their is no way to do a search.Maybe we should give some thought to gathering in the strays and put them in their rightful place in our family trees. Hope to help someone. Angus

    1. [NFLD-LAB] Surname assignment and 'change the label'...
    2. Lloyd Rowsell
    3. We have all heard stories about people who have 'changed their name' for whatever reason. Some, maybe, desired to hide their ancestoral identity, which sometimes a particular surname denotes, e.g. ethnic origin, economic status, social class and religion. We have also heard about Parish Priests, in the old days, not accepting the chosen names for children, proposed by their parents, and the PP recording an alternate Christian name for the 'record of birth'. In early Newfoundland, where, to quote fellow lister Mr.Big, "About 90% of the people were paupers", I would guess that perhaps about 90% were illiterate during his mentioned time frame, whatever that may be. In early history, the word 'Bastard' also was recorded as a surname and later a place name in early Ontario history. May I suggest that Educated, wealthy and powerful Clergy, sometimes recorded Parish birth surname spellings without the 'total knowledge' of the child's parents or relatives, who could not read or write. Is it too much to expect that these materially wealthy and well educated PP's did not know the 'generally accepted' surname spelling of the child's relatives, who were in many cases, supporting the Parish with cash and/or 'quintals of fish to be exchanged for merchants bills of exchange'. Many historical records indicate that some Church Parishs were totally beholden to it's members for financial contributions. Merchants simply 'went out of business' sometimes because of widespread economic conditions, over which they had no control. Many a 'mission' was 'shut down' because it was not economically viable, with absolutely no money coming down the line from the 'materially wealthy mother church' to maintain the service to poor humanity. I am reminded of these words-- "give me your money and your reward is in heaven" and "changing the label dosen't always mean that the content is different". Here is a short excerpt from the early NL (1858) Novel about the subject of 'surname changing'. Is it possible that some people, back then, changed their surname spelling when they 'changed their religious beliefs and allegiance? CHAPTER 49...AN OPENING INTO FATHER DEBREES HEART page 324...He that once was Mrs. Barres husband is a RC priest; page 325.... He looked at the seal more closely than she had done. The letters seem to spell DEBREE, but with and I said he: the true way, I suppose. I never saw it written. Yes, its Norman; DE BRIE, --and Huguenot, said Mrs. Barre, weeping, and speaking like one whose mind was on other things. Perhaps to divert her attention, Mr. Wellon continued his examination. This appears to be a heap of stones. said he. It came from Rouen, in the old wars, she explained, and the family added the word Barre, for Chemin Barre, because one of them barred the way single-handed; and she gave herself again to her thoughts. It was De Brie-Barre, then? he said; but added, immediately, Pardon me , my dear Mrs. Barre, if I seem to have been drawing out your confidence. It was entirely without a thought. It does not matter, now, she answered: Mr. De Brie was my husband; but that name Igantius is a new one, when he became a Romish priest. His own name is Walter. ----Almost the first person whom he met in the road was Miss Dare, and he gave her the note to read. She wept, like Mrs. Barre. So he is her husband! she exclaimed. Then turning the letter over, her eye, too, was caught by the seal, which she examined more closely than the wife had done. ...........This must be a fancy of his own, she said; a mockery of his name, it reads DEBRIS, and the charge, (or whatever it is,) is a heap of stones. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The circle of life is complete for Mom. She had a wonderful life and, at 91, she had a spirit which never diminished although her body eventually failed. She passed away in the warm and loving atmosphere of home, comforted and enveloped by her family. In 1939, after nursing and midwifery training, Mom`s adventurous spirit led her from home in Brighton, England to a position in the outpost nursing stations at Cow Head and Rose Blanche, in the colony of Newfoundland. A meeting with Dr. Donald Cant in Stephenville led to romance and marriage. He, had completed medical training in Yorkshire and independently ventured overseas to become Medical Officer on the `Lady Anderson`, a hospital ship providing medical care to the isolated communities of the South Coast of Newfoundland. They married in 1942 in Halifax. During the war, Mom returned to England where first son John was born there whil! > e, Don served with the Canadian forces in Europe. With the return of peace, they returned to Newfoundland. The family grew with Jim born in Harbour Breton, then twins, Jennifer and Elizabeth, and finally Daphne all born in Corner Brook. Throughout the years, Mom devoted herself to her family, as well as to the community with hospital auxiliary and other volunteer work. Mom freely accepted criticism of her bread making skills but she was the queen of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding! Mom had an optimistic and positive nature- with a sherry glass never "half empty", but always "half full". Even after losing Don in 1996 and suffering the decline of old age, she vigorously maintained as much independence and contribution to the family as she possibly could. Mom always said she was lucky to have such a loving family, but we all know it was her warmth, selflessness and example that made it so. She has been the family matriarch, the hub around which we all have gathered for so long! > . It has been a sad goodbye, but she has left us a legacy of close-knit and supportive family bonds, and high standards that we will strive to maintain. A memorial event will be held at 12967 21 A Ave. in Surrey, BC on Nov. 23, 2003 from 2 to 5 p.m. > October 24, 2003 > > DOWNTON, Joan V. - Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander on October 22, 2003, Joan V. 2. Just to take this one step further, to this day, Halifax sends a gigantic Christmas Tree to the City of Boston as thanks for the generosity of the people of Massachusetts during the Halifax Disaster. They have never missed a year. I was brought up in the Boston area (Lynn, Mass) and have seen it dozens of times and it always looks beautiful. As a rule most TV stations carry a brief story of why Halifax sends this tree at Christmas time. Frank Strugnell

    3. A few days ago I posted a note about the gemerous response of the people of Mass., to an appeal by Rev. Robert T.S. Lowell, for relief to a disaster (shortage of food crisis) at Conception Bay NL in the year 1848. Last night I saw a TV report about the 1917 Disaster at Halifax, N.S. I was reminded of the charitable efforts of the people of Mass., some 69 years earlier, towards the people of CB NL when I heard words, which went something like this, by a comentator on the December 1917 events at Halifax. The relief response was quick and effecient from Boston, Mass. A train load of Doctors, Nurses & relief workers, food, medical supplies, etc. was quickly assembled by relatives of the people of Halifax. The response was more like a family to family response to a time of need than a Government to Government response to a disaster. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
