This is my reply to those listers who requested information on the Royal / Ryall Surname: general response.... "A few weeks ago someone wrote and asked me if I had found any information on the subject surname. Unfortunately, parts my filing system is 'out of control' at this moment, and I have misplaced the email. I have had leanings for some time that my Rosewell/Roswell ancestors came from New England to Newfoundland and have been looking in that direction. On October 21st, 2001 I downloaded 8 pages of info from the internet under this subject: "A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, before 1692, Volume #3...Ross-Ruel by James Savage. At that time I could see no obvious family connections. This paper has been tucked away until yesterday. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful in my attempts to return to the website link below on June 2, 2002 and again on Nov. 5, 2003. Savage New England Register, Volume 3, Ross-Ruel http://www.usgenet.org/usa/vt/state/savage/bk3/ross-ruel.htm perhaps you will have better luck. There is almost a page of interesting information on Royal, or Ryall, under the following Christian names: Isaac, Ruth, Jemima, Sarah, Elizabeth, Robert, John, Thomas, Samuel, William etc. and in-law connections to Dodd, Tyler, Cole, Endicott, Gorges (George?) and Stevens. Please let me know if you are able to access the website, if not I could transcribe the information." In response to my earlier posting, here are excerpts from emails requesting more information on the subject surname. #1.."My ROYAL/RYALLs are mostly from the Job's cove area." #2.. "I am most , absolutely interested in those surnames!!!...have you got something on the go that I don't know about??...Loyalist name?!..Royal/Ryall!?" #3.."I've traced the family (Ryall, Royal, Royle, Rahill, Rial etc ) coming here as early as 1706. They would come in the summer to fish, and return to England in he Fall. England would not allow them to settle until the early 1800's.." ((lghr comment...important to remember that families from New England also engaged in the summer migratory fishery at 'the big island' and 'the Labrador')) #4.."...... was a Riles from the southcoast of Newfoundland. The surname has changed spelling many times in that family but I have been able to trace the family back to Charles Ryall born about 1820. Unfortunately I have not been able to determine where he was born. He married Sarah Hutchings in Harbour Breton around 1840." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 1930 Letter from Nippers Harbour Lighthouse which contains family historical information... Today I received a letter which was written at Nippers Harbour on June 17th, 1930....The signature appears to be that of Jas P. Taylor (that is my first impression of reading the letter). The letter was written to Mr. Uriah Rousell who was at that time living in St. Johns. Mr. Uriah Rowsell was the grandson of John Rousell who married Emma in 1798. (Mr. Uriah Rowsells grandaughter found this letter in his Family Bible). The stationery is Lighthouse Department, St. Johns, Newfoundland. There is a sketch of a lighthouse...the name W.P. Rogerson is crossed out and the words beneath are Superintendent of Lighthouses & Fog Alarms. Here are some excerpts: Mr. Rousell Dear Sir according to promise I am sending you the dates of Mr. & Mrs. Burials....George Rousell died July 1, 1817, aged 91 years also Sarah, the wife of George Rousell have died 1820 aged 86 years......this was the verse that was on Mr. Rousells stone: The days of our age are 3 score years and ten And should men be so strong that they came to 4 score It is their strength Then By Joy and Sorrow soon pass away And they are gone ......I couldnt read the verse that was on the old ladiess stone it was very dull, the letter was almost gone, this is just as it is on the stones the grave yard is filled and nailed up that is the old yard. back page excerpt: Cold weather on Baccalhao, I had to give a big repair there, I am Nippers Harbour now. My next station will be Long Island then I will go over to Botwood and do the stations there, then I suppose I will go out to Penguin Island where the Gold is, I wonder if I will find it, if I do I will give you some Question: I wonder if someone confirm the name of the person who signed the letter? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? This is how I work the mojo voodoo for searching NF GenWEB First, for some folks who may not be that technically inclined (like myself) make sure you have your browser window address box open. I once unknowingly closed mine and had a heck of a time figuring out how to manuever around the net without it. It is a box below your basic (file, edit) toolbar on the top of your screen that shows the address of where you are on the net e.g address [htttp://www.ancestraldigs.com] I use microsoft internet explorer so there is a blue e in front of my URL address box. If you don't see this URL address bar go to the bar just underneath the bar which shows you file, edit, view, insert etc toolbar. Right-Click on it and drag that bar down. A URL address box should (magically) appear. Now if you Right-click in this Tool Bar you should get an option for "Google" click it and a google toolbar will all be at the top of your screen; Right click the word google next to the search box and it should give you the option of Address, click that and a URL Address box will also appear. and now you can either type in the below address or highlight it by left clicking on it and scrolling over it and then hitting Ctrl+ C <cut> going to the desired location like the URL box and hitting Ctrl key+ V to paste it in. If you do not have a google toolbar at the top of your screen you need to get one; check www.google.com NF GEN Web address: http://www.genweb.ca/nf.htm After you put the Gen Web address in your URL box and "get to the site" Having a "GOOGLE TOOL BAR" on the top of your screen will have to the right an Icon for "Search this Site" Click it and then go to the bottom of the page where it shows you RESULTS pg 1>>>>100 "search within results" and click "search within results" Now CHOOSE your surname, Keyword etc and you will be Happy. The KEY is Having a GOOGLE TOOL BAR....I don't recall how I got it...but go to www.google.com and play around it is Just a click away and is a must have feature Sorry if this message is TOO obvious for Some or TOO confusing for others....it is like the Old "Could have had a V-8" commercial once you get there. If I have complicated something here or given misguiding directions...please help simplify. Hope it helps someone. Joanne

To narrow a search go to www.google.com. Chose "advanced". In the "domain" section type in the site domain ie "huronweb.com". In the "find results" section type in the name you are looking for. It is not perfect but it is good!! Debbie Jeans Winterbrook Scottish Terriers CKC Reg'd (1980) Newfoundland, Canada
Judy, Re site searches: Are you referring to the Nfld. Grand Banks site at: http://ngb.chebucto.org/ which has a wonderful GOOGLE search Engine? I'm referring to Nfld. GenWeb at: http://www.genweb.ca/nf.htm which dosen't have a search engine. Matt > There is a site search engine. Judy, I use GOOGLE regularly to do web searches. But damned if I can figure out how to use it to search a specific website such as Nfld. GenWeb. I and I'm sure the other good folks on this list would bless you if you would give us step-by-step instructions re how to specifically search the Nfld. GenWeb site with GOOGLE. Looking forward to your instructions as I've bugging the folks at Nfld. GenWeb for several years to add a search feature similar to the one on the Grand Banks site. Hi George, It would seem that the Nfld. GenWeb website is being resurrected. That's good news. I have one request. In the process of revamping the site. Would someone have a serious look at adding a site search engine? Because there is such a volume of data scattered all over the site, it is virtually impossible to access all of the pertinent stuff other than viewing each page - one at a time. For example, typing in MULLALY should direct me to every page on the site that has a MULLALY reference. That would save us a ton of time. Good luck in the transition and all of the problems I know go along with that process. Matt
I have just checked out the webpage and I cannot find the search engine. Could you please send the link to where it can be found? Thanks, Heather

Hi Frank; For sure our ancestors looked forward to receiving these barrels of clothing as it was hard hard times back then here in Newfoundland. Although I can never recall our little town on the Great Northern Peninsula ever receiving any barrels of clothing, maybe due to the long distance by boat, but I sure can remember the flyer from a Company/organization called "Economic", not sure if it came from the US or Canada. My Mom would order a beautiful coat, dress etc. but when it arrived the items were so old fashioned for us younger children, everything was substituted and she did have to pay for it so it must have been a type of thrift store. Most of the time it would fit other children that were a little less fortunate than we were and the clothes were very cheap, but disappointing when none of it would fit the children, e.g. an old lady's raglan with a belt that tied into a big knot certainly didn't suit a child of 10-12 years of age and the stinch of moth balls <big grin> phew!!! but we did wear Seal skin coats and mittens made by our Mom and moose hyde slippers with rabbit fur sewed around the tops, as my Dad was an avid hunter and nothing was wasted, even the brains of the moose was cooked and prepared for head cheese <yuk> liked it back then though.!!
