Enjoyed the item on the Nfld Railway. In June 1947 my Mother and I traveled from St. Johns to Champneys, Trinity Bay. We left St. Johns at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and arrived in Clarenville to change trains. We ate supper there. The train to Champneys arrived and we proceeded. We were on a sleeper and I slept in the upper bunk. It being dark I never saw the Trinity Loop. We arrived in Champneys at 6 AM. Our return trip was much the same only after arriving in Clarenville we had to change for Gander where we were to take a plane to LaGuardia airport in New York City (there was no Kennedy then). The plane came from Dublin, Ireland. At that time planes couldn't make it all the way without refueling at Gander. My father had made the same trip when he emigrated from Nfld to New York in 1924. The trip from Champneys to New York by train took him five days. Today you leave New York and arrive in St Johns in less than 12 hours. That's progress. I have really enjoyed the Newfoundland Tidbits. Merry Christmas to all. Lydia Batson Woodcheke, in sunny Florida

Hi Listers Can anyone out there help Jerry with this jerway@comcast.net Fred Pafford -----Original Message----- From: Jerry Way [mailto:jerway@comcast.net] Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2003 11:33 AM To: Fred Pafford Subject: Re: Looking for Gideon Way Hi Fred; Thanks for your feedback. My limited data indicates that Gideon was Methodist... Consider the following from Shirley Hall, gggranduaghter of Flora Oldford, sister of Anna Maria Oldford, Gideon Way's wife... From History of Education in Musgravetown, written by Anna Belle Peddle in 1986... " Around 1868 the first school was built in centre Musgravetown - the Wesleyan School. In that same year, a teacher Gideon Way was sent by Methodist Society of England to teach the children of Bloomfield and Musgravetown. Mr Way was originally a blacksmith by trade from Bonavista. He became not only the first teacher but also the Lay Reader. He held Bible classes in the School as well as Day Classes. (Anna Belle Peddle is 85 years old in 2002). Do you know how I might contact Anna Belle Peddle? Or obtain a copy of her writings? I understand she has authored several books. RSVP, Jerry
The conclusion of tidbits of info. about the "History" of "Newfoundland Railway" ENJOY! Locomotives & Rolling Stock: Kitbashing locomotives and rolling stock may require the replacement or re-manufacture of wheelsets, drivetrains, and truck side frames. NorthWest Short Line (amongst others) produces many of these products in a variety of sizes to suit almost all situations. Large structural components may be fabricated using basic brass, wood, or styrene shapes. Portions of plastic or resin locomotive shells (both steam and diesel) may also be cut out and assembled, along with suitable detail parts to complete the model. S Scale 40 Ton Covered Hopper The West Short Line has a car that is a dead ringer for the Newfoundland (CN) 40 Ton Covered Hopper, NR series 6900 - 6925. Order it exclusively from Central Hobby Shop in East Syracuse. The NR had 18 units (grey color) 40 ton Plug Door Heated Boxcar American Models Plug Door Reefer is also a dead ringer for the 40 Ton Plug Door Heated Boxcar, NR series 6300 - 6364. They were originally built by the Eastern Car Company in 1938 for CN (series 290001 - 290190) and 65 were in use on the island. 30 Ton Steel Flatcars East Broad Top flatcars can be converted. The EBT cars are a bit too narrow so they must be split down the center and a 10" strip of styrene to bring them to the proper width of 8'-3". The length is perfect at 33'-7". In Newfoundland most of the flats, both 34' and 40', had the fishbelly center sills and the regular channel iron for the outside sills. You have to do a bit of "tweaking" of the centre sill flanges to allow the wheels to turn properly. Miscellaneous Tidbits "Mixed trains" were a normal sight. Railbed was 547 miles from Port aux Basque to St. John's 42" gauge is called "Cape gauge" by the British. 42" gauge railways are present in South Africa, Western Australia, and New Zealand. There was (is?) an elaborate station at St. John's. Spiral Helix: There used to be one on the Bonavista Branch. It was called "the Trinity Loop". Change in elevation was 34'. Last run on the Bonavista Branch Line departed Bonavista @ 2:08 Nov 29, 1988 - 5 cars - #802 loco The Newfoundland Railway was never converted to standard gauge. Instead, standard gauge wagons were retrucked with narrow gauge boggies on arrival at Port aux Basque. The impression is that tie spacing was same as main line and that ties stuck out same amount so were about one foot shorter than standard. Ballast was very variable from sand/gravel to beach pebbles to crushed rock. Many of the ties installed in later years were `standard gauge' ties. #593 was the last steam loco to operate in Nfld. It was retired in Nov 1958 & is preserved in Corner Brook. Most of the steam was retired in 1957. New Zealand received narrow gauge (3'6") Class Da - EMD G12's from London, Ontario in 1955. The MV "Fredrick Carter" operated between North Sydney NS and Port aux Basques NF from 1968 to 1986. This vessel was sold to European interests, modified, and renamed "Hansa Link". Built in 1967 by Davie Shipbuilding, Lauzon, Quebec. Excerpt from a Southwestern Newfoundland travel guide... Hurling gale force winds down from its summit to the stunted weather-beaten forest below, the moody Table Mountain sometimes raises gusts exceeding 160 km/h which disrupt highway traffic and were known to derail the now discontinued narrow gauge trains. Little wonder this area is called Wreck House! Table Mountain is now accessible by a trail which takes you to an excellent photo vantage where you can survey the surrounding area. During World War II, the United States built a radar station, an air strip and assorted buildings at the top of Table Mountain. In the valley below Table Mountain was the home of Lauchie MacDougall, the famous "human wind gauge." Lauchie was under contract to the railway to determine whether the area was passable for trains on any given day and to notify them if the gusts were too high. After his death in 1965, his wife continued his work until 1972. Other Railways in Newfoundland Abbreviated Chronology 1901 - Railway built from Millertown Junction, on the Newfoundland Railway, to Millertown, by a lumberman by the name of Col. John (Jack) Miller who brought his lumber business over from Europe. 1909 - Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company completes railway from paper mill at Grand Falls to ocean port of Botwood. 1910 - A.N.D. Co. buys Millertown Railway. Extends railway to Harpoon Brook for logging 1928 - Buchans Mining Company connects it's railway to Millertown Railway at Buchan's Junction. 1957 - both Harpoon Tramway and part of Millertown Railway between Buchans Junction and Millertown abandonded. 1957 - July 1st: Botwood Railway sold to new private interest: Grand Falls Central Railway Company. Millertown Railway 19.5 miles from Millertown Jc. to Millertown 3'6" gauge While independantly operated during 1901-1909, the railway was apparently worked by the owner using an ex-Harbour Grace Railway 4-4-0T (supposedly a Hunslet purchased from P.E.I. Railway in 1881). A.N.D. Co. hired Nfld Rwy crews and locos after 1909 to pull trains until traffic began on Buchans Railway in 1928. Nfld Rwy crews and engines were not often used after that point. The costal town of Lewisporte (formerly known as Burnt Harbour (?)) was named after his son, Lewis. Botwood Railway 22 miles from Grand Falls to Botwood 2 miles from Grand Falls to Windsor 3'6" gauge The first steam locomotive in Newfoundland (0-6-0T - c.1881) ended up in operation on this line. Harpoon Tramway 19 miles from Millertown to Harpoon Brook 3'6" gauge Built solely to take advantage of logging opportunities in the Harpoon Brook area. Buchans Railway 19 miles from Buchans Jc. to Buchans 3'6" gauge Buchans Mining Company, a subsidiary of American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCo, USA), built a railway from Buchans to Buchans Junction on the Millertown Railway. The line was known as Buchans Railway. Grand Falls Central Railway Company 12 miles from Grand Falls to Bishop's Falls 10 miles from Bishop's Falls to Botwood 2 miles Grand Falls to Windsor 3'6" gauge The company incorporated in 1957 to aquire and operate the Botwood Railway. Operations began in July of 1957. Newfoundland Hardwood Lumber ??? miles 3'6" gauge This company apparently still operates a short section of track using a pair of 20T diesels

First Spike driven by Henry Fitzpatrick (without ceremony) Aug 16, 1881 at Johhny Dwyer's Farm, Belvedre, St John's Last Spike removed by Hubie Hollett, Cannings Lane, Bishop Falls Nfld Nov 1990 General Information Most of the railway was designed by Robert Gillespe Reid, a bridge and railway builder with experience in Australia and North America. When the task was completed, his sons assumed the operation of the railway, as R.G. Reid had no interest outside the actual civil engineering work. Each son, in turn, served as president of the railway. In 1922, financial difficulties forced the railway to close down for a week, as it was unable to meet payroll obligations. The official name of the passenger train in Newfoundland was "The Caribou". The most-used nickname of the service was "The Newfie Bullet". It was often referred to as the slowest crack-passenger train in the world. In the early days of steam service, the train was often limited to 5 miles per hour along many areas of track. An average trip from St. John's to Port aux Basques would take 26 to 27 hours. This was shortened to about 22 1/2 hours by 1958. The train would run from 3 to 7 days per week. A typical consist would include a sleeper, diner, and an observation car. The final run of The Bullet in 1969 carried 350 passengers in 15 cars, pulled by three l200 HP locomotives, including #923. Including branch lines, the total narrow-gauge trackage on the island was very near 1000 miles. Fishing Specials would often run from St. John's to Argentia. Stops would be made at whatever locations were convenient to allow sport fishermen to disembark. Logging operations for the pulp and paper industry on the island could generate up to 120,000 cords of wood per summer, shipped for processing at Grand Falls. Drifting snow would often trap trains for days at a time. One incident had the train stuck for 17 days before it could finally be freed. South-easterly winds from the Table Mountains could gust to over 100 miles per hour, blowing the trains off the tracks. If it was judged unsafe to continue, the train would be stopped about 20 miles east of Port aux Basques, and the engine would proceed alone to check the wind conditions. When the railway was dismantled, the new highway was built along the existing right-of-way. This now places the tractor-trailers into the same danger from the winds that the train suffered. in 1986, the Federal Government of Canada offered the province of Newfoundland $800 million in a "Roads for Rails" deal. At that time, the Newfoundland government chose not to accept, as they had set aside $20 million to upgrade the train service. In 1988, the Newfoundland government took the original offer, spelling the end of the Railway service on the island. The Railway Society in Corner Brook has a diner, coach, diesel locomotive, and snowplow on display, along with a variety of memorobilia and historical information. They also are in proud possesion of #593, the last steam engine to run on the island. A small excursion service runs on the preserved trackage at Trinity Loop. It utilizes a few open coaches and a somewhat comical appearing, scaled-down charicature of G8 #802. #802 pulled the final train over the Bonavista Branch in 1988. To be continued:

I thought I would try once again to see if anyone has some knowledge of the Applin families from the North Penn. I am seeking information about Emily APPLIN b. 1904 daughter of Thomas APPLIN (b. 1878) and Mary unknown. Mary married John HUMBER following Thomas's death in 1905. I have been searching and requesting documents from the Archives/Vital stats and have not been able to access information that would lead me to information about my grandmother's mother, etc. My grandmother always said patience was a virtue. I am lucky enough to have her sister still alive at 101 years young, Jane Applin BENNETT, at the nursing home in Corner Brook. However, all my attempts to write to her or have someone touch base with her have failed. I am not able to go to NL at this time. Every day I cautiously read the obits for fear that she has passed on before I am able to make contact with her. If I could only drive there myself .... the information I would have. The Applin's were not a huge family and it seems that their families were the result of 3 brothers coming to the Island. I have been in touch with some Applin's related to my grandmother. But I cannot uncover who her mom was and I do not know any information past the name of her grandparents, Joseph b. 1835 and Jane COOMBS b. 1844 I would be so grateful if someone could take the time to share even the smallest of information with me about this family. We all know what it is like, we just need that little clue that will open up a whole new search. thank you and Happy and Safe Holidays Cindy researching Gallant - Bay of Islands, brother to Felix of Stephenville's family. Hi All; I would like to wish all the hard working Staff and all Listers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous new year. Wishing "Good Health" to All. Happy Holidays Evelyn
Excerpts taken from an introduction of "A History of Newfoundland" (1895) by D. W. Prowse Q.C...... quote: ".....because an old family tie with Newfoundland compels me to a pious interest in the colony. I write these few words because I am sure that, were he alive, my dear father would rejoice to do so. .......One Sunday, sixty-eight years ago, as the bells were ringing people to church in Poole, he was carried away, with a sinking heart, to a counting-house in Carbonear.......In 1835 my father left Newfoundland, and soon afterwards the other members of my family also returned. We went no more a-roving on these cold western seas. But down to my own childhood the mystery of Newfoundland was preserved in the English home. Kegs of cranberries and of delicious capelin arrived from Harbour Grace as punctual as the seasons........It had been my father's wish and hope to revisit his old haunts, but his crossings of the Atlantic were not to be repeated. ......At a fortunate moment, I think, Judge Prowse has brought out his chronicle of the most ancient and most unfortunate of our colonies. He has found his material in records which are many of them entirely unpublished, and his book is an original and valuable contribution to early American history. The sorrows of Newfoundland have at last awakened the sympathy of the mother country.........She has suffered much, and her geographical position requires that she should always stand prepared for suffering. But her spirit, we love to think, is indomitable, and if her natural resources are liable to collapse, they are not less liable to sudden and brilliant revival. It may be that before these words see the light, her fortunes will once more be in the rapid ascendant. The perusal of Judge Prowse's book can but increase the number of those who cordially desire that it may be so." EDMUND GOSSE, London, March 1895 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi All; Our Ancestors could never imagine that their "Christmas Tradition" could change from a blissful, religious, a "no worry, no nonsense", hardly any gift exchanges and real Christmas Trees to "not so religious", in some cases the real meaning of Christmas lost through worries and fear of not having enough funds for that highly expensive gift for a loved one or friend, an Artificial Christmas Tree decorated so beautiful with different colors of ELECTRIC lights gleaming through inside and outside of the homes. What a magnificent sight, oh, but only if they could return, just for one hour, one hour? yes, they would surely drop dead from the change and beauty of it all. There would be a mulitude of questions and oh yes, why are the Church Bells not ringing on Christmas Eve in our beautiful little out-ports any longer? where have all the Settlers migrated too? why, we don't even have fish cooked for dinner on Christmas Eve!! What? did I misunderstand? no more fishing off our New! foundland and Labrador Shores? Where did all the fish go me by? my oh my, the Roads are so nice and smooth!! did you call it pavement? what is it? why do you all have these cold stone cellars?? wood is much better and not near as damp. What do you call that Bird sitting on the Table? huh, Turkey eh? what happened to Rabbits, Turs, Ducks or even a Goose? no by, really? what's a LICENCE? What have you guys did to yerselves? Where's all of the "Mummers? What kind of Government is in power now? thought so!! Ok ggggg grandfather!!! this is life as it is today for us and you ALL made it possible and better for us, I think!!! I still celebrate our old traditional Christmas, try to anyways, with the exception of the Turkey, Tree, lights and the great exchange of gifts and I do have a car. I still make my old fashioned Christmas molasses Bread, jiggs dinner along with the Turkey, never was too fond of the heavy fruit cakes that grandmother made, but I have changed to making Gum drop cake, peach and boiled raisin, cherry and Apricot cakes and they too are so yummy. I also make "Cut Glass Cookies" on December 23rd. Cut Glass? yep, but it's jello or jelly!! not glass by!! no more "Mummers" come around here and I do miss that tradition. We now fill our own stockings, no Christmas striped candy, peppermint knobs, cake and fruit, but a lot of cute small gifts stuffed in there. I cook my dinner on an ELECTRIC Stove and just have to turn the switch on for light throughout the entire house, what a switch Grandfather, huh? but I sure would love a reunion for just one more "Old Fashion Christmas" with Santa being pulled by Horses and Sleigh and a real tree with no pretty lights, just tinsel, garland and old fashioned Bulbs and the smell of dinner cooking on that old wood burning Stove again, just once again!! dress up and tag along with the other Mummers. "Lest we ever forget our old fashioned traditional Newfoundland and Labrador Christmas". Cheers Evelyn
