    1. [NFLD-LAB] HERLICK/HARLICK/HORLICK OF Newfoundland
    2. Allan B. Costello
    3. Hello there, sorry for any cross-postings. I am looking for information on the HERLICK/HARLICK/HORLICK/etc. families of Newfoundland. I would very much appreciate hearing from any persons researching these families to touch base and to share information. I am particularly interested in the parents of my great-great grandmother Mary HERLICK/HARLICK/HORLICK born sometime between 1850-1870. Mary married my ggGF Edward Meaney of Avondale, NL. All I know of her is that she was from "down the bay". There are quite a few records of HORLICK recorded at Fair Island, Bonavista Bay but these families are Church of England. Could be possible, but the majority of my family is RC. There are records of HARLICKs in Harbour Grace which would perhaps be more likely: obit Feb. 8 1914 - Mrs. HARLICK, Harbour Grace, dies at 80. Catherine Harlick (of Edward) in a 1904 Hr. Grace directory Does anyone know of these HARLICKS and if they were Catholic? Any help would be greatly appreciated! ABC

    3. During the period 1648-1678 English built sailing ships, filled with the natural resource of Terra Bacalou, returning to Europe in the fall would most likely meet somewhere off Cape Spear or nearby the St. John's Harbour to form a convoy. There you would have a meeting of ships sailing to the North east from the areas around Cape RAZ and ships that had sailed south from Cape Bonaventure aka Cape Bonavista. ********************************************************** --- [email protected] wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. abt. 1640-1678....THANK YOU Mr. Cole for a most > interesting > posting of early NL surname....Re: NFLD-LAB Digest, Vol 1, > Issue > 39 (Lloyd Rowsell) > 2. 3. Newfoundland was never a province of England but a colony. As for citing Newfoundland sources prior to 1949 you do not add England. Newfoundland had its own government, made its own laws & set its own rules & regulations. One example is the Census records. Our data of taking these Census never corresponded to the English Census records & are available today because Newfoundland never saw any reason to limit their access. The English Census' were big for 1851 & 1881 but you still can not access the one's from the early to mid 1900's. Stating Newfoundland, England is like stating Australia, England or New Zealand, England. Debbie Jeans, CG(C) Certified Genealogist (Canada) St.John's, Newfoundland

    3. I've seen this discussed on the list before, but can't find it in the archives. How do you cite sources referencing NFLD? For instance, before 1948, NFLD is part of England. Is it a colony? I'm "improving" sources in genealogy program and wondered how I should refer to NFLD place records before 1948 -- Carbonear, Conception Bay North, Newfoundland, England? and/or Colony of Newfoundland? I think there might be other important dates before 1948. Help would be greatly appreciated. Donna Kirby Milley
