Hi Carolyn, I was calling the parish office this morning anyway so I asked the secretary to check the Petty Harbour records for your father. I live in the Goulds which is the closest neighbouring community and same parish as Petty Harbour. I'll let you know this afternoon if she finds anything. Thanks Randy - here's what I thought: My dad and family/Murray definitely lived in Fox Harbour but his Mom, Anastasia was from Gould's Rd, Brigus. Maybe in July, she was home visiting her mom when my dad was born. I found the USA 1930 census where he stated for Immigration that he was born in Petty Harbour. The following is an excerpt from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. The entire article can be found at, _http://www.biographi.ca/EN/ShowBio.asp?BioId=41773_ (http://www.biographi.ca/EN/ShowBio.asp?BioId=41773) PILOT, WILLIAM, Church of England clergyman, educator, and writer; b. 30 Dec. 1841 in Bristol, England, son of Thomas Pilot and Ann Flook; m. 4 Oct. 1870 Agnes Elizabeth Whiteway Wakeham, niece of William Vallance Whiteway*, in St John’s, and they had two sons and two daughters; grandfather of the artist Robert Wakeham Pilot; d. 25 Sept. 1913 in St John’s. The school life of the children of fishing families, who made up the great majority of Newfoundland’s population, was disrupted by the custom of putting children as young as six years to work in the fishery. The low and broken attendance that resulted distressed Pilot, who ascribed it to the apathy of parents, without fully realizing the economic necessity which motivated them. He persistently, but unsuccessfully, urged upon government the need for free and compulsory education. He was more successful in advocating standard readers and the provision of maps, globes, blackboards, and other school facilities.
Hello, Vince: I'm looking for family of Albert Ambrose Francis whose sister Eliza (Bennett) Dibbon lived at Port au Bras in 1924. Has anyone come across the Francis name? Francis and Bennett do not add up. Margaret
Au contraire Vince. In those days what we know as high school was unavailable in most Newfoundland outports. Boys usually quit school and fished with their families after a few years of primary schooling. Girls stayed in school longer. However it is doubtful that they would have been included in directories, such as Lovell's, until they were at least 18. Would anyone know how old a person would have to be to be listed as a fisherman in Lovell's 1871 Directory? Some children would not be very old to go fishing back then. Thanks Jim
Hi Cindy So far there isn't a connection but maybe your Jacques Beaudoin could be my Julie Beaudoin's brother since Julie would have been born between 1800 and 1810. I have no dates for Julie nor her parents and siblings. I have hit a brickwall with her and her husband Jean Giroux. I have been trying to find information on this couple for years and nothing came up. Let me know if Jacques has any siblings that may match Julie's. Our Beaudoin families may be connected if I can find any dates or places for Julie.
