    3. Just to clarify Dan. Dad was born and raised in Northern Bay. He fished there until 1941 when he joined the Canadian Navy in St. John's, where he served for the duration of the war. There were many like him as the RCN actively recruited Newfoundlanders all through the war. Cheers. 3. Hi Matt I realize that I have some records that are not of "Newfoundlanders" but I have been concentrating on those who signed up in Newfoundland with Newfoundland or British Units. I don't want to start researching the Canadian Navy nominal rolls looking for Newfoundlanders. I have enough to keep me busy until my eyesight gives out<grin>. By the way, I am waiting for my cousin Kevin Stamp to get back to me on his ex wife Gloria Barter of Bay de Verde. I know it has been a while since you inquired but I had to track him down first. I should know by the end of the weekend. 3. Hi John, The Mary Ann Myles that I have in my genealogy was born about 1839 in Nflnd, I have no idea where in Nflnd or who her parents were, all I know is that she married John Woods. he must have died before 1881 because she is then listed in the 1881 census as Widow in Nova Scotia, she has her son John Thomas Woods age 21 with her and they are staying with another couple, Mary Mannings and Thomas Mannings??? I have no idea what the connection is to these people, Mary mannings is listed as being born in Nflnd and Thomas as being born in Ireland, I thought a possibility could be that she was Mary Ann's sister in law , To make matters worse..I find Mary Ann and her son in the 1901 and 1911 census and shes now listed as Mary Ann Oliver and a widow. this is a mystery I have had no luck figuring out!! 2. Paul Gillingham
    3. HI, Looking for info on a George Graham - 1921 Census Nfld Bishop Falls shows he came from NB in 1889 and married a Jessie ?? from the Bay of Islands. On page 59 of the Legacy of James Cook written by Dr. Harley mentions a George Graham from NS who imported metal and made cans for the Lobster Fishery in the Bay of Islands area. I also believe that he was boarding with a relative of mine Jacob Gillingham and Jacob Gillingham's mother Bridget Gillingham is shown in the 1921 census of Bishop Falls as mother of George Graham but this should read mother of Jacob Gillingham which I have traced as the Gillinghams from Burnt Islands on the south west coast. Also looking for the maiden name of Laura Gillingham the wife of Jacob. Any help would be appreciated.

You can come across all sorts of weird spellings for it in old documents. Anyway it's no more of a surprise than finding out the Sioux are really called Sue. Burley in old docs is often Burleigh (and if you didn't visit the village you really don't know what you missed). Oh, and Christchurch used to be called Twynham. The other thing set up to confuse the unwary is that most of the placenames in the New Forest begin with B: Burley, Brockenhurst, Beaulieu, Buckler's Hard, two spots called Blackbush, Boldre, the completely separate Boldrewood, Bashley, Berkeley, Bransgore. . . . I could go on.

But I have visited that area and there is, in the New Forest, a town called "Bewley" but ... and here's the trick ... that's the phonetic pronunciation the way the English say it. The actual spelling of the town's name is Beaulieu. My french education say that's pronounced more like Bow-Leeuh. So I am just warning that a slight mispelling of a phonetically written name and you'd never look in some Index for Beaulieu!
