    1. [NFLD-LAB] Thanks Re WELLS Info request
    2. Gerald & Margaret Major
    3. Thanks to all who replied to the following request. I have confirmation that the record is as written in the original document. Does anyone have any Info on a Jeremy Wells born 1817 somewhere in Notre Dame Bay? with wife Mary born 1823 Joe Batts Arm died 1903 Comfort Cove? Subject: Re: [NL-ROOTS] VITAL RECORDS FOR NOTRE DAME BAY (Civil Registration) Newfoundland Death Register--- WELLS VITAL RECORDS FOR NOTRE DAME BAY (Civil Registration) Newfoundland Death Register PART 6: 1902 -1904 NAME DATE OF DEATH PLACE OF DEATH CAUSE AGE RELIGION OCCUPATION PLACE OF BIRTH PLACE OF BURIAL RESEARCH NOTES Jeremy WELLS d Apr 30 1904 Comfort Cove old age 87 years SA Comfort Cove Comfort Cove The record above suggests that Jeremy Wells was born at Comfort Cove in 1817. I believe there is an error re the place of birth. All of the Information I have read tells me that the WELLS name did not appear at Comfort Cove until after 1881. I wonder if someone who will be reading the Vital Records mentioned above at the Archives could double check the info re Jeremy Wells. Thanks Margaret Head Major

    3. Hi, I'm looking fo information on Richad Moorsor Moores of Mulley's Cove, Conception Bay North. He is listed in the Plantation Book as having shared land with James Reynolds. Any info on his birthplace or even any dates connected with him would be great. As well if anyone knows how these men knew each other. I'm assuming they did previously before cutting and clearing land together as well as buying some more between them. 1. [NFLD-LAB] Will of Samuel Angel, Petty Harbour 1728, prob 1734.
    2. Thomas Cole
    3. Resently I have had the opportunity to peruse the will of Sam Angel, Petty Harbour TC Caution: These downloadable PCC wills are not the original wills as some are lead to believe rather they are handwritten copies made from the original by a clerk in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The three witness names in this will are not recognizable Newfoundland names at all and were copied by clerical staff at a distance. I am positive, for such an important document, Sam Angel would have chosen witnesses who were well established permanent residents of Petty Harbour or nearby residents rather than some obscure people as these names seem to indicate. I suggest the clerk has misinterpreted the names completely. Further - For Barramore, I would suggest Narramore, which is Devon dialect, and by extension Newfoundland dialect, for Normore. This is certainly a more recognizable Newfoundland name. After downloading these PCC wills researchers should seek the advice of those who are experienced in paleography. In the case of Samuel Angel's will, it doesn't take a great deal of study to determine the name of the first wife of Samuel (Sury as is reported) as Lucy. Of course, the same is true for Lucy, the daughter of Sam. To verify this all one has to do is look through the will for instances of the upper case L and for the lower case c, of which there are several. The daughter, Clare as reported, thus becomes Grace (the last four letters of a five letter girl's name is race - what else but Grace could it be!). This can be determined even if the first letter is not very clear.
