Hello, This is my first posting on the NEWTON list. I have just started researching my gg-grandfather Samuel NEWTON born abt 1804 in Ohio and married Frances Jones (date and place unknown). They had two daughters, Elizabeth born 1839 in Polk Co, TX and Ophelia born April 13, 1849 Polk Co, TX. Frances must have died around 1850 because Samuel and the girls moved to Dodge, Riverside, Walker County Texas and he remarried a Susannah Morse according to Walker County Historical Society. Samuel was a prosperous man, he owned a general store in Dodge and in Riverside at what became "NEWTON'S BRANCH" or NEWTON'S CROSSING for there was a ferry there. Ophelia, my great-grandmother, married Thomas Pascal BARKER of the "Republic of Texas" Barkers, Jan 13, 1867 and they had my grandfather, Jackson Thomas (Jack) BARKER Sept 26, 1877 in Huntsville, Walker CO, TX. The other children that I have found so far are: (1) Jackson Thomas Barker born Sept 26m 1877 Huntsville, Walker Co, TX parents, Thomas Pascal BARKER and Ophelia NEWTON per SS Application and Death Cert, died Nov 2, 1942 Dallas, Dallas Co, TX and buried at LaurelLand Cemetery with his last wife, Eula Mae (unknown) Barker. Jacks first wife was Lillie BROWN, married around 1900 and they had two daughters, Cora born Feb 14, 1902 in TX and Belle Z. born Aug 18, 1907. Cora married D.V. Kinnard and Belle married Curtis P. Anderson. Jack married my grandmother, Wanda Vonsaleri BROWN (do not know if she was related to Lillie Brown) on Nov 14, 1929 in Dallas. They had 6 boys together, only 2 survived Benjamin (Bennie) Clyde BARKER born 1919 in Dallas and my father Eugene Varnell BARKER born Aug 20, 1920 in Dallas. On his Birth Certificate there is a court document to "Legalize Given Name of Child" that was filed in 1940 and signed by Jack T. Barker. Both Bennie Clyde and Eugene V. Barker were pall bearers at Ophelia NEWTON-BARKERs funeral, March 13, 1940 in Waco, McLennan County, TX. Ophelia is buried at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco. My father married my mother Kathleen O'Hara Wingate in 1945 in Ft Worth and I was born in 1946 in the Cleburne Hospital in Johnson Co, TX to return to my grandmother's home in Alvarado, Johnson Co, TX to live with my mothers family while my father attended Texas Christian University. I am the only issue of this union. They divorced in 1948. (2) Clyde Buren Barker born Apr 29, 1884, Lampasses, Lampasses Co, TX, died in Waco. (3)Maude Barker, born June 24, 1880 and married a Texas Senator KNOWLES. Maude and Senator KNOWLES lived in Dallas in 1940 when Ophelia died. Senator KNOWLES was a pall bearer as well. (4) Cora BARKER born Dec 25, 1886 and married an )unknown) LEWIS. Cora died Aug 28, 1949 and is buried beside Ophelia NEWTON-BARKER in Rosemound Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County, TX. (5) W. H. BARKER male born unknown, died unknown. I apologize for this long narrative but I wanted to get what I know and what I have documented on the List, in hopes that someone would connect with this NEWTON line. I don't know what happened to Elizabeth NEWTON, Ophelia's sister, who she married or ??? From what I have seen on the internet it appears that many Samuel Newton were from the East Coast is there any one out there that has Newton's that migrated on to Ohio and then to Texas?
