    3. I have several earlier references to Ebenezer Newton in PA, and want to share them with others on the Newton List that are interested in this particular line: The first New World record of Ebenezer Newton is on April 30, 1751, when he was among the signers of a petition in Chanceford Township, York Co., PA. ( from “Special Publication Number 1, April 1981. Surviving Early Records of York Co., PA. More Precisely Being Abstracts of all Known Existing Documents Submitted to York County Court of Quarter Sessions During 1749-1754, Plus An All-Inclusive Surname Index,” compiled and published by the South Central PA Genealogical Society, Inc., PO Box 1824, York, PA 17405, case # 26 (p. 8 of the supplement). He’s listed here as “Elenasa Nuton.”) On October 30, 1753, he was among the signers of another petition in the same township, this one complaining about the road between Chanceford and Connistogoes in Lancaster Co. PA. Also among the signers are William Buchannan and William Buchanan. (from “Special Publication Number 1, April 1981. Surviving Early Records of York Co., PA. More Precisely Being Abstracts of all Known Existing Documents Submitted to York County Court of Quarter Sessions During 1749-1754, Plus An All-Inclusive Surname Index,” compiled and published by the South Central PA Genealogical Society, Inc., PO Box 1824, York, PA 17405, case #69, p. 17-18 of the supplement. Here he ’s listed as Ebenezer Nuton.) In 1754 Ebenezer Newton purchased 100 acres on March 14, and another 200 acres later that same year, in Hellam Township, PA. This land was situated on both sides of the Conawage Branch of the Susquehanna River. (The Way of the Leaf, by Ted R. Newton, Butler Books, Louisville, KY, 1994, p. 31) In 1757, Ebenezer was a defendant in a court case in York Co., PA in the July Term of the Court of Common Pleas. ( Special Publication No. 46, July/Oct. 1991: Abstracts from Common Pleas Docket, York Co., PA April term 1757 through July Term 1761, abstracted and compiled by David P. Hively, and published by the South Central PA Genealogical Society, Inc, PO Box 1824, York, PA 17405, p. 8. Docket #60 William Plumsted, Esqr. Register General, for the use of Wm. Grey vs. Ebenezer Newton, David McKinley & Wm. Thompson.) The next record of Ebenezer and his wife is the tax assessment of 1762, York Co., PA, Shrewsbury Township. It is this land that was adjacent to William Buchanan. Thus sometime between the first deed and 1762, he had moved 25-30 miles south. (Historical Southern Families (Vol. 21), edited by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1976, p. 3.)
