The below info was found in some files that my daughter got from Gordon Parks a long while ago. I don't know much about the estate of this John. Does anyone have the estate papers of this John Newton and/or others? Since our info says John Newton that m. Mary Mitchell died in 1787, his estate should have been administrated earlier than 1799 or at least started before that. I am wandering if the below estate papers is talking about a different John Newton that m. Naomi as she had a baby in 1797. So her John must have died in 1799? Also I understand that Mary Mitchell Newton is still living in 1840. I believe we have two John Newtons mixed up. This happened so many times while "little old ladies" were applying to the DAR and left out generations. This info from Gordon Parks (e-mail glparks@frontiernet.net). "John Newton b. 1750 in VA enlisted in the First Regiment of South Carolina on 31 December 1776 and re-enlisted on 1 February 1780. He became a corporal on 4 June 1777 and became a sergeant on 3 June 1779. He served under Captain Simeon Theus. He was at the seige of Charleston." "In Edgefield C ounty, SC estate papers in Apartment 43 package 1785 the estate papers of joh Newton. On 11 March 1799 Naomi Newton, Amos Richardson and Rafeal (?) Wilson were made administrators of John Newton's estate. Naomi made her mark and the others signed." "On 11 March 1799 four men were ordered that all or at least three of them inventory the estate within 90 days. This was completed on 1 June 1799. The sale took place 1 October 1799 by William Johnston, crier. "Neomy Nuten" was the only family member to purchase at the sale. She purchased among other items, a mare, flax wheel and cards and sow. The most expensive item sold was a hogshead of tobacco for 40 pounds of sterling. The entire estate sold for about 139 sterling. Gordon said he cannot find Naomi after this." David S.
