Notes for PETER 1 NEWTON: Peter Newton was mentioned in Mercer Co., Kentucky records on December 24, 1793, along with Thomas Lillard, Gabriel Slaughter, Isham Talbot and others. Peter Newton appeared on the Mercer Co., Kentucky tax rolls in 1795, being over 21 years old, with no male children aged 16-21, owning one horse and five cattle, on 140 acres. The first purchase of land made in Jefferson township bears the date of August 5, 1834, when James Newton bought the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section one, township 3 south, range 3 west. This land is on Anderson Creek, nearly 2 miles south of Birdseye, Indiana. James and Margaret (King) Newton had 14 children, of which only four are living. They still reside on their farm near Birdseye, and are enjoying the fruits of their labor. James sold goods near Birdseye, and traded in venison, wild turkeys and the skins of various wild animals, such as deer, coons, etc. His son Peter bought his farm of 160 acres. He was married to Lucinda Jane Wood who was born 23 Dec 1835 and died 2 Aug 1909. I have her parents information as well.
