    2. Cousins, such a nice term to see being applied. There are a tremendous amount of John Newton's to be found, which for me is very frustrating to say the least! My original guide was a statement from my Dad, that they had all been Master Mariners. This I knew true of my grandfather from his WW1 exploits. With his birth certificate I set off to our National Archives, at Kew, London. Out of work at the time I spent several days searching. Ah poor me: no luck. Work came along some two weeks later, so on the Wednesday before, the new job I said to my dear wife I will go and have another browse. Success, I found his Master Mariners details, the details of his obituary, and the newspaper it was printed in. All some twenty five years ago! I now have details of his family by Elizabeth Howard, and her sister Eleanor (Ellen) Howard; his second wife. No marriage certs yet located: but being worked on! John NEWTON b1813=Elizabeth HOWARD b1815 Both born Cheshire, UK. Robert b1838, Thomas b1840, Emma b1848, Elizabeth b 1855. From Census of 1861. By which time wife Elizabeth had died, and confirmed the mother of Thomas. JN=Ellen HOWARD b1826 marriage abt 1855. Frederick b1858, Sarah b 1860, Martha E b1861, Mary I b 1863, Alfred b 1864, All the sons were Master Mariners, with Thomas's profession unknown. Alfred married Eleanor (Nell) Clayworth. Alfred died at sea, abt 1905? There were three children whom Nell took to Australia, The son Jack, died of flu in 1919 in New Zealand? So my 19th century family is slowly coming to life again, from which I derive some comfort that there lives are not to be forgotten. To all, happy searches Peter
