Dear Newton searchers, I know this is from way out in left field, but may lead somewhere. My family told a story about a connection to Napoleon some said through Empress Josephine, hence my grandmothers maiden name, Josephine Newton (1870-1955). I never put much stock in these musings. However, I just came across the birth record for my great grandmothers nephew, Charles Newton (1912-1994). it listed his father (my great-grandmother's younger brother) as Samuel Eugene Napoleon Bonaparte Newton. Truly weird! Any thoughts? Patricia
Hummmm... It is possible, but I'm always skeptical until I see documentary proof. I know, I am not celebrity acquiring, I am hoping there is a similar fable in a Newton family that could be a clue to a connection. Happy hunting! Given that the marriage between Napoleon and Josephine produced no children, and ended in divorce, I would say it's pretty unlikely. Why would someone name their kid after someone who divorced their cousin? I'd say that the story was an effect of the naming, not vice-versa. More people than you might imagine, particularly in the south, named their children Napoleon, in honor of Napoleon III, especially around the time of his death.
