Hi Faye, thanks for writing. Do you know what part of Tenn your Thomas was in? It is possible that we are from the same line. There was many Thomas Newtons. Our line lived in Cherokee County about 20 minutes from the Tenn line. Will try to search my records for anything that might be a lead. If you will contact [email protected] this is Bill Navey one of the Newton decendants from Benjamin Newton. He may be able to help you. Thanks Geralene & Joe Newton Woodleaf,NC
Do you have any dates or names that led you to Rev. George Newton born 1765 in York County Pennsylvania. There are many George Newtons. If we can get Cecila Newton's birthdate or where she was living at a paticular time maybe we can connect her to the right Newton. Sometime is you can determine the area they live in at a particular time then you can go to the census in that county and determine their parents. It is very possible that we are from the same line because a number of the Newtons went south into Ga. and into Tenn. My husband is form Rev. George Newton's brother William. E-mail Bill Navey at [email protected] He is a decendant from Rev. George Newton's brother Captain Benjamin. He has a lot on the internet from his line but I could not find anything on George. E-mail Bill and maybe he may have something. I will keep you in mind. My daughter has one of my books on Newtons and I may be able to find something in it. Happy New Year.
My gmother was Mary Jane Newton Hastings from N.C.. Would love to see the pictures you have. [email protected]
My gmother was a Newton. Would love to see the pix. [email protected]

Newton of Person Co., NC Good Morning, Anyone interested in the following info:According to the History of Gallitin, Saline, Hamilton, Franklin and Williamson Counties of Illinois (found in the John A. Logan Library genealogical section) in a biographical sketch on John G. Newton (pg. 922-923) The biography is that of John G. Newton, the son of Uriah Newton who is the brother of John G. Newton. John G. Newton, farmer, and prominent citizen of Marion Precinct, was born in Kentucky in 1821, the fourth of nine children of Uriah and Mary (Haley) Newton, natives of North Carolina where they were reared and married , and from where, a few years later, they moved to Kentucky. About 1828 they moved to Sumner County, Tenn., and in 1841 to Todd County Ky. About 1850 they settled in Trigg County, where they both died a few years later. The grandfather, John Newton, a native of North Carolina, was an old Revolutionary soldier, whose father came from England. Our subject was given a good business education at home, and began as a tenant-farmer, and several years later was employed as an overseer. In January, 1847 he married Lucinda, daughter of C and Mary Fletcher, of Logan Co. KY., the place of her birth about 1823. Their children are Mary A., wife of W.W. Spiller; Virginia C., wife of M.C. Casey, and Dr. John T. of Clinton County. In 1858 he left Todd county and came to his present farm of 200 fine acres, three miles north of Marion, which he has acquired from a beginning of nothing, through his good judgement and industry. In 1872 he was elected to represent this county in the Lower House, and served two years with satisfaction to all concerned. The Doctor graduated as a physician in St. Louis in 1878, practiced in Lake Creek Precinct and Thompsonville two years, and finally in Clinton County where he has practiced with success ever since. Our subject was a Whig, but since its dissolution became a Democrat. His wife died in April 1863. The following is just a compliation of scattered info related to this family, in some manner. Anyone interested? John Newton, Rev. War Soldier, is listed on the 1794 Tax lists of Person County NC along with several others. On the tax list are: Henry Newton 0 acres 1 White Poll Ruben Newton 211 acres 1 white Poll 1 Black Poll Benjamin Newton 108 acres 1 white poll 1 black poll John Newton 150 acres 1 white poll 1 black poll ****NOTE I think, given the following information that Ruben, Henry, and Benjamin are either his brothers or his sons. Taxables list for 1795 for Person County, list the following: John Newton Ruben Newton Benjamin Newton Taxable property lists for 1814 Person County, list the following John Newton Uriah Newton >From the Abstracts of Person Co. The book ALDERMANS IN AMERICA by William Alderman Parker is a good source for the branch of the Newton family [Samuel, Jacob, George, & Isaac] that settled near Newton's Cross Roads in New Hanover County, NC, in about 1750. Most of the Duplin County, NC Newtons descend from the above brothers and some moved to GA. This book is available in most major libraries. With Best Regards, Don Dunnington
Springfield, TN is in present-day Robertson Co., TN. Reiley

Here's another reference for those of you searching for Newton clues in VA and Alabama. "Newton and Wright (families) of Virginia, Alabama, and other Southern States," in Historical Southern Families, v. 22, pp. 77-110. This article traces some of the descendants of John Newton, Rev. War soldier born abt 1750 in VA, later in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Some of his children went to GA and others to Alabama. Related families are MITCHELL, CHAMBLESS, HARRISON,BERRY, ROBINSON,BYRD, and WRIGHT. More on this line is in Historical Southern Families, v. 23, p. 4,7,14,143,166 and 194-5. Mary Ann McTee, a very knowledgable Newton researcher, was kind enough to provide me with photocopies of these refs., and I wish to thank her here personally and publicly.
