    3. There were 5 Newton (Amanda E - TN; Charlotte - OK; Cora - NC; D.M-GA; and Sarah Jane - GA) on the Miller Cherokee Roll (Rejected). I assume some are on the accepted roll, but I do not have it. There were many people falsely rejected. Their applications, rejected or not, state their ancestry and why they feel they were of Cherokee descent. The table of contents of a new academic study of the roll is at http://members.aol.com/rarebk The site also has on-line the surname index of "Starr's Old Cherokee Families and Their Genealogy," a Cherokee Genealogy Tutorial which is a great primer on how to do effective Indian genealogy research, the 1835 Cherokee census which is within the tutorial, other indexes, and a Native American CD which appears to contain huge amounts of Native American genealogical material. Very fascinating. Steve ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Try it today - there's no risk! 2. Well, Gregg, it would seem that we both have our work cut out for us! After reviewing some of the information I have collected (but not verified on my own), my Newton line is from York Co., PA, thru VA, then into Lincoln/Rutherford County area of NC. Don't know where else they may have been in between. My John McCall Newton was the son of Captain Benjamin and Nancy McCall Newton. Captain Ben was the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Buchanan (or Bohannan). Some say that Elizabeth was a first cousin to President Buchanan. She was from Ireland. The info I have says that Captain Ben was born c. 1747 in York Co., PA, died 2/20/1835, in Rutherford Co., NC. According to a couple of other researchers, my Newton line is descended from an heir to Sir Isaac (he himself had no offspring), although I have two different possible heirs and have not done the research back as of yet to connect to either of them. I have received helpful information detailing the Newton brothers' journey to the US that looks like it is probably accurate. My Newtons used the names Ebenezer and Benjamin extensively so it gets really confusing trying to figure out who's who on various websites. My John McCall Newton married Jenny (some sites list her as "Jane Erwood" but other family researchers call her Jenny Arrowood or Errowood--could be any variation) in Rutherford County, NC in 1816. He was born 10/14/1787. I don't have any info at all on Jenny. They are my 5th great grandparents. This info may not tie into yours but maybe someone else out there will recognize this line. 2. I would be as well. I believe mine were from Kingston-Upon-Hull. In particular, John McCall Newton, married to Jenny Arrowood (or variation-Harwood, Yearwood, or?) This John Newton is a descendant of Ebenezer. He and Jenny had a son named Benjamin B. Newton, born in NC. Would you know whether this line of Newtons is part of the Stafford group? If you need more info please let me know. It's limited but I have a little more that I have not verified myself yet. Thanks, Laura Champion Paulk

    3. Hi Brian, I'm sending this to all on the Newton list since there may be others researching this branch of the Newton family. I live in Stafford Co, Va. There are many Newton's in Stafford, especially in the White Oak area. They've been here since Colonial times. A Newton researcher, Danny (D.P.) Newton, started a Civil War museum in White Oak. He wanted to preserve the records he and his father, Patrick Newton, had collected over the years. Danny also did a ton of research on the Native Americans in this branch of the family. Many of the White Oak Newton's worked for years to establish their right to belong to certain Native American tribes. It was tough, since older family members were close mouthed over that group of ancestors. For one, they were concerned with Virginia's stringent Jim Crow laws, which as late as the 1960's, would have affected anyone with Native American blood. I'll enclose a hyperlink to an article in Fredericksburg Free Lance Star Newspaper about Danny's museum. If you search at the newspaper site for Newton, you turn up several obits. Unfortunately, they don't carry as much information as they use to. This isn't my husband's direct line but I've got a hunch the families are related. Red's line is from George Newton of Lower Norfolk Co. The family tale is George was one of four brothers (why is it so often four brothers?) who immigrated from England in the late 1600's. The same legend is told by the White Oakers but, if I remember correctly, their branch descends from Henry Newton. Brian, I KNOW I've seen websites on this family, but I'm having problems locating them right now. I poke around a bit more and if I find them, I'll post the links for everyone. Here's the link to Danny's story in the Free Lance Star. <http://fredericksburg.com/news/columns/evans/le121099.html> The White Oak branch of the Newton clan has many ties to the Sullivan and Jett families. It's said in this area, if you're a Newton, Sullivan or Jett you're related to half the county. That doesn't hold true now because of the huge influx of new people over the past 20 years, but there's still a large group of them in Stafford. The Newton's were mainly farmers, trappers, hunters and watermen, usually all four at the same time. It was pretty easy to feed your family but sometimes hard to scratch up cash money. One Newton patriarch, who wouldn't appreciate me posting his name because his wife would not care to have this family laundry flying in the breeze, said the Newton's raised the cash they needed to pay taxes, buy the kids shoes and school books, etc, by "jackleg carpentry, shade tree mechanics and running 'shine". There's a cross road in the White Oak area named Wildcat Corner where the old timers say the "Newton College" used to exist. I've never gotten much more than a grin when I ask about it, but it's hinted that's where the smoother white lightning ever sipped was created. The database only gave dates of 1851 - 1900. This is interesting because my gggrandmother was Susan A. Taylor Born in 1867, in Stafford County Va. Daughter of James and Jane Taylor. Susan had siblings named William, Mary and Gay. Susan married John R Newton. So now I find a William S. Taylor that married Mary Newton, I don't know if there is a connection but I need to follow this lead. Any Help??? Buddy

    1. Re: Long Shot
    2. Hello Hazel, This really is a long shot. Actually, I have no information on my Parker other than a name, Margaret Catherine Parker. She married Luis Bumgardner, of Burke Co., NC. The date of their marriage is unknown to me and this info does come from another family researcher online. He gives a birthdate of 1785 for my Margaret Catherine Parker. My Newtons are John McCall Newton (m. Jennie Arrowood 1816--spelling varies), and their son Benjamin B. Newton. Benjamin married Millie Norman and their daughter was Susan Ann Newton, who married William Bumgardner (my 3rd great grandparents). I originally had Captain Benjamin Newton and Nancy McCall as John McCall's parents, but the dates don't seem right. Another researcher checked their records and told me that the information they held agrees that John McCall Newton does indeed descend from Ebenezer Newton, descendant of an heir to Sir Isaac Newton. HOWEVER, since I need to recheck this info and figure out why the dates seem wrong, I hesitate to connect them at this point. My info shows Captain Benjamin as the son of Ebenezer Newton and Elizabeth Buchanan. There is more than one Ebenezer and it could be that something got mixed up there. Let me know if I have confused you--I'm still new to this! I have the info from Geralene Newton ([email protected]), who has an excerpt from a book which takes the Newtons from 1066 England to the US if that would help, or contact her directly through her email. 3. Thought I'd see if we can connect on the NEWTON and PARKER families....My NEWTON line is: PETER BULKELEY married 2nd Dec. 1756 SUSANNAH NEWTON daughter of DEACON JAMES and SUSANNA (WYATT)NEWTON. It is my belief that Deacon James is 3rd generation in Newton line. Peter and Susanna had 11 children, their last child was ISAAC NEWTON BULKELEY, b. 1781, m. Betsey DARLING..Isaac and Betsey' youngest daughter Harriet married William Augustus HAWLEY. Harriet and William A. had daughter Susan West Hawley who married JOEL G. PARKER (6th generation Parker). Does any of this match up to your lines? It's pretty long. If I get time I'll try to condense it and get it on the list. My line is said to go back to Sir Isaac's brother (by one researcher) or uncle (by another). I'm not sure which it is yet. Laura Champion Paulk Orlando, FL (researching Falls, Newton, Pruitt, Parker, Bumgardner, Jerrell or Jarrell, Whiteside, and many others)
