    3. Anyone who has done extensive searches through archives has seen how common the name 'Newton' given as a middle or first name was. I've given up thinking it has any significance. After all, Sir Isaac Newton was quite famous by then. Judy jryden@charter.net A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. 3. Gay, I did a search and found this: Confereate States of America in 1861 Isac Mitchell Newton entered the Civil War Service August 23, 1861. He died from tetanus and a crushed hand in CSA on November 29, 1861. Emma Burns Nalley's father brought his body in a wagon., Thomas Buford Burns. Mitchell's name is on Newton monument with Billy & Elmina, his parents. Bryan

    3. Bryan, Isaac M. Newton is listed in 1860 Pickens Co, S.C. Did he marry? He is listed as being age 20 and born in Anderson Co, S.C., he is still in the household with his father and mother. If he died in 1861 and married after the 1860 census, he may have not had any children or no more than one maybe. Do you have him as haveing married and with children? 3. I am not sure what to make of it, but I found the twins in the HELTON household in 1850. James Newton Todd (1839-1933) was the son of Sarah Ann (Helton) Todd. I wonder where the "Newton" in James Newton Todd originates. It seems it wouldn't be purely neighborly, since James Newton Todd was born (presumably) before those NEWTON kids had to find a new home circa 1843. It might be helpful for you to list the names of Amos Newton's grandkids. There may be other onomastic clues. 1. Re: [NEWTON-L] AMOS ??
    2. I forgot to mention in my Amos inquiry one bit of information that has been puzzling to me. My line lived in Edgar Co. Ill at one time in late 1870. I found a bio of a neighbor which read "A. W. Newton, physician and surgeon, is a native of Westmoreland Co, Va. Was born June 2l, l806. He left his parents' home with an older brother, William, a resident of Albany, N.Y. who gave him the advantage of a good literary education......he graduated in 1832 at the Penn. U. of Medicine; in 1835, he emigrated to Kentucky and took up his residence near Paris, Bourbon, Co. in l870, he came to Edgar Co, Illinois. I have never been able to verify who he is but he lived in a tiny village with my other relatives at the same time, and I suspect there was some connection. By this time, Amos who md Jane was dead but the daughter Susannah Jane Newton had married and was in the same area, so perhaps there is a connection. Ring any bells??? Thanks, Dottie

    1. John NEWTON Sr., Cumberland County VA, 1795
    2. Darwin Newton
    3. Hi Newton Listers Surnames of interest include: NEWTON; DUNCAN; CARTER; MELTON; HARRIS; GLOVER; JAMES; WOODSON; SCRUGGS; Recent postings regarding Newton families in and about Virginia have caught my attention and prompted me to add this information about my family and see if anyone "connects". I haven't been able to discern any direct connection in anyone else's posting myself, but I'll try to include enough detail so possibly someone will recognize some familiar names. My oldest Newton ancestor is the subject John NEWTON Sr who's estate was probated in Cumberland County, VA, on 26 Jan 1795. I don't know his parent(s) name(s) or his date or place of birth, but from the ages of his children it seems likely that he was born ca.1730 and he first appears in Cumberland County records ca. 1760. Probate proceedings indicate the following: 1. His Widow was Lucretia (nee?) and she was appointed guardian of her & John's minor daughter Susanna. 2. I've found no documentation that Lucretia was the mother of any, some or all of the other 8 surviving children named in the settlement. 3. The other children named in the probate are: I. Mary(Molly) NEWTON; married Jacob DUNCAN Sr. her date of birth presumed to be in 1850's as other sources indicate that her eldest child was b. Jan 1775. II. Elizabeth NEWTON; married Shadrack CARTER, records indicate born before 1765. III. Sarah (Sally NEWTON; married Pearce Wade MELTON Sr. IV. Nancy NEWTON; married William MELTON V. William NEWTON; married Frances HARRIS, born before 1765, executor of the estate. VI. John NEWTON Jr.; married Nancy GLOVER, born after 1765, died 1812 my ancestor. VII. Joseph NEWTON Sr.; married Elizabeth GLOVER(Nancy's sister), born after 1765. VIII. Charles NEWTON; married Nancy JAMES, born after 1765 There are at least 3 other NEWTON families in/around 1800-1820 Cumberland County. A. There is another Charles contemporaneous with VIII. above(both in 1810 census) that I presume to be the Charles NEWTON that married Nancy WOODSON and remained in Cumberland County where he died in 1823 and she died in 1846. I have seen claims that this Charles' father was George NEWTON B. There was a James NEWTON that I have seen attributed as a son of the subject John NEWTON Sr in some postings. Apparently that is an error in light of the probate. C. Also there are postings about a Mary NEWTON that was born in Cumberland County ca 1796 whose father was Isaac NEWTON, that married Thomas SCRUGGS. If there is anyone mentioned above that you have information about I'd be happy to share what I have that you might want/need and welcome your correction of any errors that I have made. And finally, (I beg your pardon if this part seems selfish) it seems to me that it only makes sense, considering all the recent traffic on this list about the John, Isaac, William, Willoughby, George, Jesse and so on NEWTONs that seem to trace their roots to/through Virginia, that any researcher that is serious about determining where they stem from, would, if they are a surnamed NEWTON male {or persuade a brother, uncle, cousin that represents their male NEWTON line in they're not}, want to participate in the NEWTON DNA project and help us all to better answer who connects to who!! [or is it whom?] Even a "no match" helps determine where not to look and a match could be a real breakthrough!! And even if you don't think you attach to Virginia, your Newtons come from some where and chances are there is another Newton out there that traces back to the same place. "Where do I go?" you say, : http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/newtondna/ Thanks for your attention -- Darwin Newton Cambridge KS 67023 denewton@sktc.net

The pension application was denied stating that he "owned too much property to qualify for pension". Apparently, he had trouble working the land with a useless, deformed arm (which he had ultimately lost by that time), and a chest wound (both from the war) that left him weak. * At the time he submitted the pension application, he and MA lived in Midway (Madison County), Texas, and had been there for 8 years. 3. Hi Sandy, Yes, this is my John S. What has been so confusing is that the family has, on occasion, believed his name to be Jasper. Since I'm finding more information of late (thank you Darwin and Gay!), I'm pretty sure Jasper must be another name that often appears in the family, but John must be my gggrandfather's name. 3. Gay, I see that your Newtons are VA/SC/GA/AL/TX. Although "Newton" is not an unusual name, and it is my maiden name, it's been the hardest one to find info on in my genealogical searchings. NO ONE seems to have heard of any of my Newton folks. So, since I saw TX in your geographical listing, I thought "why not throw the questions out there" (yet again) to see if any of her Texans link up to any of mine. Here is some information: * My great grandfather was JS Newton (b. 6-24-1839 in MS and d. 6-18-1908 in TX). JS stands for either John Sims, John Seth, Jasper Sims, or Jasper Seth. We just don't know. My grandfather, William Henry Newton, always insisted that his father JS was from Meridien, MS. * He married MA (Malissa Ann) Eaves (b. 1-14-1841 in MS and d. 11-21-1901 TX) in Mississippi (Lawrence Co, it's believed.) * JS served in the Confederacy, Company C, 41st Mississippi Regiment, from January 1862 to June 1864. He was badly wounded. I have a photo copy of a Confederate Pension Application he submitted in 1899. I don't know where they were prior to that (Mississippi? Another area in Texas?). * In listing his property, the pension app states that he had: "200 acres of land in Madison County in H. Walker Teague, of the value of $500.00. Two mules value $80, two cows and two calves value $40. 10 head of hogs value $15.00". (I was born, raised, and lived all but 9 years in Texas, but I'm unfamiliar with H. Walker Teague.is that another county?) * I also have pages which I saved, that were at some point, torn from a family bible. The following folks' names appear on those pages. I don't know their relation to JS and MA. My grandfather, William Henry Newton, was one of JS' and MA's children. They had others. I cannot tell from the pages if these people are the children of JS and MA, or siblings, cousins, or.? Anyway, their names are: --Indiana A Newton (b. 04-6-1862) --JJ Newton (b. 05-12-1866) --Marion May Levest (Levert?) Newton (b. 03-14-1875) --Mary Ollevia (Ollivia?) Newton (b. 06-29-1879) If these folks lived, or when/who they may have married, or when they later died, all remains a mystery. * Finally, I know my grandfather had a sister, and her nickname was "Willie". 3. There are a lot of interesting things about this item. I will mention three. 1. The first full sentence is: "This branch of the Newtons moved from Virginia to Newberry S.C. just when it is not definitely known, sometime before the American Revolution and traced his ancestry back to Willoughby Newton and he came from England to Virginia and became the business agent of the Virginia Chartered Land Company in early colonial times." I think it is important to remember just how "early" in colonial times the Virginia Company really was. It was so early that it was already over by 1624. So even as early as the Westmoreland Newtons were, there was still not a Willoughby Newton that I could find who lived so early. The earliest Willoughby Newton I can find was born 20 DEC 1702. Even for a person to be a business agent at a relatively young age (let's say 21), and even if it were the last years of the Virginia Company's charter (let's say 1621), then this Willoughby would need to be born 1600-ish. That predates the entire proved genealogy of the Westmoreland Newtons, which starts with Thomas Newton of Kingston-upon-Hull circa 1615. 2. The birthdate of Isaac: "Isaac Newton was born in Newberry S. C. 5th of August 1776." And then over the top is written in another hand "Feb. 19, 1777", and then a word in parentheses that I can't read, but looks like 'leties'. Anyway, the point being that a different birthdate is given. Why? How could this letter be authoritative if the birthdate of Isaac himself is given incorrectly? 3. Who wrote this letter? I suggest it was written originally by a child, or perhaps a child-in-law (on behalf of their spouse) of Isaac. It says: "Father Isaac Newton died Dec 23 1859, In his 84 year. Mother Sarah Spicer Newton was born May 9th, 1772 and died Feb 13th, 1845, In her 73rd year." The letter in one hand extends at least to this 1859 date, so it clearly can't predate that. The letter says "(over)" in the lower right, so presumably there is more.... Conclusion: I think it is important to understand which "Willoughby Newton" could have been meant. If it is true that Isaac's father was John, then John would have to be born, say, 1755, latest. So John's father would have to be born, say, 1735 or earlier. I can find only one Willoughby Newton who was ever in America who was born early enough, and that's the one I mention above, born 1702. And we have his family Bible, and it mentions no son John born to him in 1750 primarily because he already had a son John born to him 25 DEC 1730. And that son John was the only son. And that son John had a son Willoughby Newton, born 27 DEC 1761, already too late to be father of John. So you see, I am afraid that a descent of Isaac's father John from Willoughby is not even theoretically possible, let alone demonstrable from records. The only way I see to make this possible is: 1. Abandon the notion that Isaac Newton born 1777 was the son of John. Even this probably would not help make it theoretically possible. 2. Find another Willoughby Newton, someone who was born one to several generations prior to 1702. That giving the wrong birthdate for Isaac is really bugging me. That opens the door for practically any possibility for explanation. Best, Gregg Bonner (cousin of Willoughby Newton, born 1702) --- LYNDON NIX <warpaint1128@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > Bryan, > Yes you did send that to me, sorry I thought you > were talking about something else. > > After reading what you sent, I would like to give > you my opinion on this data. > > First you said letter in the Newton bible, so does > this mean that someone had put this letter in a > bible???? 3. Bryan, Yes you did send that to me, sorry I thought you were talking about something else. After reading what you sent, I would like to give you my opinion on this data. First you said letter in the Newton bible, so does this mean that someone had put this letter in a bible???? Whoes bible? After reading the letter that was in the bible, it sounds like someone was doing research on Isaac Newton, with them saying genealogy of Isaac Newton. They who ever they are goes on to say that Isaac Newton traced his ancestors back to Willoughby Newton, and became the Buriness agent of the Va chartered land company in early colonial times. I am going out on a limb here, but I don't think Isaac traced his genealogy. I think who ever wrote that letter is the one who has traced their family. There is no source for this statement made in the letter and how Isaac would connect. I would have thought if they did trace their ancestor to Willoughby there would be a record of their findings, this is the same group of Newton researchers who were doing genealogy back in the 1970's. Now, you had ask about Sarah Spicer and her being Sarah Mitchell Spicer, if you will look at the letter you will see that this person added Mitchell above Sarah's name, so evidently this is where some get that her name is Mitchell. Is there more to the letter that didn't get copied ? Was there a signature to the letter? I no nothing about Willoughby Newton and I have found no one stateing they were kin to him from corresponding with the descendants of William, Isaac and Henry Newton side and children of John and Mary Mitchell. I wish we were!!!!! maybe DNA will prove we are or not!!!!!!!!! Gay Nix Gay Nix warpaint1128@sbcglobal.net
