    1. Capt. Benjamin Newton (Cleveland Co., NC)
    2. Gregg Bonner
    3. Hi Margaret, Thanks for your generous offer :) As the administrator for the Project, I will do what I can to connect you with a possible DNA donor. But as a recruiter, I am afraid I can help little, since my own line is yet to be represented (as far as I can tell). I think the answer to your question is...it depends on what you believe. If you believe that Benjamin Newton (died 1835 Cleveland County, North Carolina - I presume this is the one you mean) is the son of Ebenezer Newton and Elizabeth (Buchanan) Newton, AND you believe that John Newton (d. 26 Nov 1790) is the grandson of Ebenezer Newton and Elizabeth (Buchanan) Newton, then while we don't have a sample from Benjamin Newton per se, we do nevertheless have a de facto sample, since it should be the same thing. Moreover, we have two participants claiming descent from John Newton (d. 1790) whose DNA does not match, so we are still awaiting resolution of that issue in its own right. I will put Benjamin in the Patriarchs Table just to be sure we catch the eyes of any lurkers, etc. I don't believe any other samples are claimed to be related to the fellow you mention, but then again, I am sure I have not seen all claims made. 1. DNA of Rev. Roger Newton of Connecticut
    2. Gregg Bonner
    3. Hi Folks, We have our first DNA test result from a participant who claims descent from Rev. Roger Newton (~1608-1683) of Connecticut. It is interesting to note that the sample matched our existing "Type R" DNA group. We have 2 type Rs sampled at 25 markers, and the new sample was only 12 markers, so it remains to be seen whether those types will diverge (a la the group O divergence we saw recently) or whether it will stay one line. I believe that I will be able to report to you the results of upgraded testing in the coming weeks. What we need now is another bona fide descentant of Roger Newton, through a line other than the line of his son, John. I understand Roger had other sons named Samuel and Roger (at least) who had children, so perhaps one of them leaves descendants today along the all-male line who could be tested. 1. Patriarchs represented in the DNA Project
    2. Gregg Bonner
    3. Hi Folks, For the benefit of those who may not view the NEWTON Surname DNA Project webpage, I am including here the list of NEWTON Patriarchs already represented, as given by the claimed descents of the participants, and curated by yours truly in cases where shared claimed descents yield conflicting DNA results. Each distinct DNA type (as determined by the first 12 DNA markers tested) is given a letter designation, followed by the number of participants who claim descent from that patriarch, and finally, the name and particulars of the patriarch himself. 1. DNA Vol. 32b: splitting of "Type O" Newton DNA
    2. Gregg Bonner
    3. Hi Folks, An upgrade from 12 markers to 25 in the "O" samples revealed that the original match (a perfect 12/12) was likely coincidental. This happens sometimes when the surname is common enough (which NEWTON is), and the DNA type(s) is/are common enough. These two samples are now relatively remote, with 10 mutations between them (matching at only 20 of 25 markers). Those folks who have common DNA types, or who match or nearly match others in the NEWTON Surname DNA Project and who have only tested at 12 markers should consider upgrading. In fact it is very nearly enough for me to _a priori_ recommend 25 markers for new participants. We now have a total of 38 samples returned to the lab for testing :) I am happy to try to answer any questions.
