    1. [NEWTON] DNA Project: Vol. 41 - Rev. Roger Newton, DNA "type 'R'"
    2. Gregg Bonner
    3. Hi Folks,   The project now reports a 2nd sample whose donor claims explicit descent from the Reverend Roger Newton (died 07 Jun 1683, Milford, Connecticut). This DNA agrees with the prior participant who claimed a shared descent from the Reverend. Further, this 2nd sample comes from a person whose family stayed in that area until very recently (in genealogical timescales), so should be reliable.   I suggest that anyone with this NEWTON type "R" DNA look very closely for probable connection with said Reverend Roger Newton, if they have not already done so, and that any similar claims for descent now have a litmus test.   The most recent common ancestor for the 2 DNA providers of topic is: David Newton, great great grandson of Reverend Roger Newton; Born 25 Mar 1753, Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, Married Mary Hazen, 16 Sep 1773, Milford, New Haven, Connecticut, Died 29 Dec 1839, Hartford, Windsor County, Vermont.   Thus the DNA actually specifies the probable type of this David Newton. However, the links from David to the Reverend Roger seem to be solid and trustworthy. And, as always, we will continue to refine the connections, etc., as more samples come in.   Best,   Gregg Bonner NEWTON Surname DNA Project Group Administrator

    1. [NEWTON] NEWTON AND MERCER IN AUSTRALIA
    2. Geoff Barnett
    3. Hello to the List, I am trying to locate some long lost relatives perhaps . I can just about vaguely remember when I was very young that a visitor or a family came to my grandmothers Alice Newton (Barnett) who was living in Burslem Stoke-on-Trent. I seem to think that they came from a place called Scone and also Adelaide was mentioned. My grandmother Alice Newton born. Hucknall, Nottinghamshire and she married William Barnett born Congleton Cheshire who were married in Leek Staffordshire 1910. I am quite certain one of Alice's brothers or sisters went out to Australia at some time. Alice's siblings were Elizabeth, Samuel, Sarah A., Joseph, Walter, Thomas Newton. About 5 or 6 years ago when my uncle died I was handed a airmail letter with an Australian address , so I decided to write to the person and her surname was Mercer . I wonder if there's anyone in Australia that this info might ring a bell to them. Very much appreciated for reading......... Geoff Barnett, UK

There is a lot of "circumstantial evidence" that indicates that this Samuel NEWTON is likely the son of Joseph NEWTON & Elizabeth GLOVER of Buckingham County, VA. If so, he would be a double cousin to my 3rd great grandfather, also Samuel Newton, son of John NEWTON Jr and Nancy GLOVER of Cumberland County, VA. 3. Hi Dave, I am not sure what you mean about putting the letter groups together. Do you mean to arrange the table so that all the 'nodes' of like letter are together? I am unsure because all the nodes of same letter should also have the same haplogroup. Do you mean the rootsweb page or the FTDNA page? I have no control over SMGF. The idea was that people could be tested for free, but they wouldn't get the results. Later people figured out that they could determine which sample was theirs from the database, and use that. But I have no way of knowing who those Newtons were that tested with them or the ancestry. I would only know more raw data. The trouble there really isn't representation of the data (ordering of the DYSes, e.g.), but making initial contact with those that tested. And even then I really wouldn't know how to associate the samples with the data unless the participants had already done that. Cheers, Gregg "David S. Payne" <otime1@yahoo.com> wrote: Gregg, Yes this is a good project webpage. But I wish you would put the letter groups together so we can compare haplogroups. I think my wife's family is group T here in upstate SC but haven't been able to get anyone in our family to put up the money to test. Do you think you would be able to post DNA test results from the free http://www.smgf.org/ site? It does show that the results can be shown in any format. 2. Gregg on your web site you mentioned that your Newtons' came from Spotysylvania Co. Do you have any information on a John or William Newton that married Melvinia Bumpass and lived in the northern Hanover or Louisa Counties. He was said to have come from Spotsylvania Co. I guess he would have been born around 1800-1810 his son John William Bumpass Newton was born in 1839. Thanks Pat **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. 2. Thanks for all your past expert guidance of the Newton DNA site. I hope you will continue to monitor it and make suggestions or changes as needed. Alan Newton Miller In a message dated 3/8/2008 9:51:53 P.M. Central Daylight Time, greggbonner@yahoo.com writes: Hi Folks, In recent months, the NEWTON Surname DNA Project has surpassed the 50 member mark. We are now what is unofficially considered a "big" project. I want to thank all the participants who have helped by donating their DNA, and/or money, and/or time. I also want to thank anyone who has helped to advance NEWTON genealogy. Finally, I want to thank my co-admin, Phin Newton, for his help in sorting data, contacting participants, and particularly for helping people of the type "J" DNA get linked up to progenitor Richard Newton. As you may know, each "new" DNA type gets a new letter, incrementing alphabetically. In recent months we have also used up all the letters. A type "Z" NEWTON DNA exists, and more types evidently will be on the way. If the DNA project has shown us nothing else, it is that the derivation of NEWTON as a surname is very diverse, or, as they say, heterophyletic. All these factors and more make it now impossible for me to continue to maintain the project website to the degree that I think it needs. Therefore, I am putting this project on the equivalent of auto-pilot. The testing company makes a webpage automatically which will provide the raw data. The old website at rootsweb will continue in its present state, more or less. There will be reciprocal links in each. This means all the current data will be shown without need for me to update the existing project page for people to see it. The downside is that the explicit descent will not be shown in association with the new data from here on out, except for what we can get the participants themselves to put in their own webpage at the testing company, or by posting on various websites by parties privy to the information. I hope to adopt some registration orthodoxy to ensure that no information is lost. When the changes are complete, I will include the link to the continuing project data view at the company's website here, which is the current project webpage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/newtondna/ Thanks again to everyone who made this project such a success that it broke me. 3. I have no living male Newtons in my family, so am dependent on finding other connections for my Robert Henry Newton b. abt. 1818 somewhere in North Carolina and d. after 1881 in one of the eastern Kansas counties. I have found valuable leads to ancestors by looking at the places where NEWTONs in the DNA project were born and married -- i.e. Robert was born in NC, probably married in KY. Also, I once found a gg grandparent by finding a sibling of his with the mother's maiden name as a middle name. From there, I also found other names such as a son named after an uncle. These led me to counties where I found actual documentation for those lines. I am attempting to do the same here. Here are some notes I've made while researching this gg grandfather, Robert Henry NEWTON. Looking at them can you see any possible connection to your Newtons? Robert moved his family to Logan County, Ky. in the winter of 1844, and to Holt County, Mo., in the winter of 1850. After farming one year in Holt County, Robert took the management of the Government Mission Farm at Highland, Kan., one year (the Indian School). He next farmed in De Kalb County, Mo., and then moved to Buchanan County and remained there until he came to Kansas in 1855. This is a good problem to have :) Sincerely, Gregg Bonner NEWTON Surname DNA Project Group Administrator --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. 3. Hi Folks, In recent months, the NEWTON Surname DNA Project has surpassed the 50 member mark. We are now what is unofficially considered a "big" project. I want to thank all the participants who have helped by donating their DNA, and/or money, and/or time. I also want to thank anyone who has helped to advance NEWTON genealogy. 3. I am searching for descendants of William and Mary E Beaumont. William was born in Whitechapel, MDX about 1808 and Mary E (Knight ?) was born in Uxbridge, MDX ca. 1821. A son George born ca 1852 emigrated to New Zealand in 1875. George married Elizabeth Ann Newton in NZ in 1876. The 1861 UK census show other Beaumont children then as Mary E (21), William(19),Charlotte (17), Martha Ann (15), Sarah P (7) and Charles (3). I would be very interested to learn of other researchers especially NZ and Australian Ones Regards Keith Wise -- Keith Wise keith_wise@fastmail.fm

    2. Are there any Spotsylvania Newton researchers on this list? I am looking for information on a John or Willaim Newton that married Melvinia Bumpass. They had a son John William Bumpass Newton that was born in 1830. They lived in the Hanover -Louisa County area but the Newtons may have come from Spotsylvania Co. 2. Thank you Greg. Don't know any Spotsylvania descendants. Just found lots of land records and other records mentioning Newtons and a Henry Newton's slave who was freed as he had left... 2. The Sheldon Family Association is also doing testing with Family Tree DNA company. We had a speaker Leah Wark, she was excellent. We are hoping to get enough on each Colonial Progenitor line to establish if THEY may have been related. (CT,ME,RI Sheldon settlers 1600's) You will enjoy the speaker and they make it understandable. Unfortunately my Sheldon line has no direct sons... Now I have a NEWTON husband, 2 sons and 2 grandsons.. I am trying to remember if these generations would be enough to determine our NEWTON line.. Wilda Newton Page and others have written me over the years.. I have Jims gggf William Gilbert Newtons' father Henry Newton of Monroe Co TN, traced back from Miami OKLA, to Dallas, Co.MO to Monroe Co. TN who says in 1850 Census he was b. Ireland and am looking toward a group of Newtons in Spotsylvania Co. VA as a possibility.
