Sorry I made an error please see below. My great-great grandfather Samuel R. Newton born 1804 in VIRGINIA not OHIO. Sorry. I have copied some info below. Sue Hi Sue! I finally have some info for you on Ophelia and Thomas Barker. I found their obituaries. The library has four microfilm machines that you can make a copy on. Two of them were out-of-order and the other two were being used, so I didn't make a copy. Anyway, Ophelia's obituary is on page 2 of the Thursday, March 14, 1940, issue of the Waco News Tribune. The obituary reads: Mrs. Ophelia Barker Funeral services for Mrs. Ophelia Barker, 91, who died at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cora Lewis, 720 North Eleventh Street, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch chapel, Rev. A. Reilly Copeland officiating, burial in Rosemound Cemetery. Pallbearers will be 8 grandsons, Cecil Barker of Dallas; Doris and Woodrow Barker of Waco; Bennie and Eugene Barker of Fort Worth; Clyde and Senator Knowles of Dallas; and Jerry Knowles of Odessa. Mrs. Barker was the widow of the late Thomas Barker, who served in Hood's Brigade in the Civil War. She was born in 1849 in Polk County, which has since been divided into two counties. Surviving are three sons, J. T. Barker of Dallas, W. H. and C. B. Barker , both of Waco; 2 daughters, Mrs. C. C. Knowles of Dallas and Mrs. Cora Lewis of Waco; 30 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild. I found the obituary for Thomas Barker in a book entitled "Early Waco Obituaries from 1874-1908." I also found out that the Waco library has the newspapers from 1898 on microfilm so I will check next time I go to the library and see if there was any more to the obituary, but I don't think I'll find anymore. Anyway, Thomas Barker's obituary was in the Monday, June 2, 1902, issue of the paper. It reads: Thomas Barker, aged about 40, died at his home, 1408 Mary, yesterday. Ship remains to Chilton. Well, I think that Ophelia's obituary may help you, but I think Thomas' probably just created more questions. I'll keep trying to find some more info for you. Hope I helped a little bit. Write when you have a chance. Betty 8-16-99 Huntsville Library. " Dodge, in the years between 1874 and 1879, was described by the station agent, Alston B. Ostrander. He said Dodge had seven adult citizens, no children, and seven buildings: the depot with its agent, Alston B. Ostrander, and his wife, a two-story hotel kept by a Mr. Boyd and his wife, whose brother, W.D. "Doty" McGowan, lived with them, a vacant building, formerly the store of Samuel R. NEWTON, the school, which was vacant since no children lived in the town, but was used by young people living on nearby plantations for dances, a general merchandise store owned by Russell, John and Henry Roark, another store operated by Ezra M. Josey and Janes Roark, and a story- and -a- half- house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cato." In the reference of the Dodge information sent to me was the following, "39. Samuel R. NEWTON had moved to a spot on the Trinity River where he had a residence, a store, and a loading dock. "NEWTON'S Branch," which is really a creek, was named for him. He was listed in the 1850 Census of Polk Co., TX , as being forty-six years of age and a native of Virginia. At that time he had two daughters living with him , Elizabeth, who was eleven, and OPHELIA, who was two. Both children had been born in Texas. On May 7, 1851, Samuel R. NEWTON married Susannah Morse in a ceremony performed by W. R. Powell, Justice of the Peace, at Newport." pgs 499 & 500 "Huntsville and Walker Co, TX a Bicentennial History. Hello, This is my first posting on the NEWTON list. I have just started researching my gg-grandfather Samuel NEWTON born abt 1804 in Ohio and married Frances Jones (date and place unknown). They had two daughters, Elizabeth born 1839 in Polk Co, TX and Ophelia born April 13, 1849 Polk Co, TX. Frances must have died around 1850 because Samuel and the girls moved to Dodge, Riverside, Walker County Texas and he remarried a Susannah Morse according to Walker County Historical Society. Samuel was a prosperous man, he owned a general store in Dodge and in Riverside at what became "NEWTON'S BRANCH" or NEWTON'S CROSSING for there was a ferry there. Ophelia, my great-grandmother, married Thomas Pascal BARKER of the "Republic of Texas" Barkers, Jan 13, 1867 and they had my grandfather, Jackson Thomas (Jack) BARKER Sept 26, 1877 in Huntsville, Walker CO, TX. The other children that I have found so far are: (1) Jackson Thomas Barker born Sept 26m 1877 Huntsville, Walker Co, TX parents, Thomas Pascal BARKER and Ophelia NEWTON per SS Application and Death Cert, died Nov 2, 1942 Dallas, Dallas Co, TX and buried at LaurelLand Cemetery with his last wife, Eula Mae (unknown) Barker. Jacks first wife was Lillie BROWN, married around 1900 and they had two daughters, Cora born Feb 14, 1902 in TX and Belle Z. born Aug 18, 1907. Cora married D.V. Kinnard and Belle married Curtis P. Anderson. Jack married my grandmother, Wanda Vonsaleri BROWN (do not know if she was related to Lillie Brown) on Nov 14, 1929 in Dallas. They had 6 boys together, only 2 survived Benjamin (Bennie) Clyde BARKER born 1919 in Dallas and my father Eugene Varnell BARKER born Aug 20, 1920 in Dallas. On his Birth Certificate there is a court document to "Legalize Given Name of Child" that was filed in 1940 and signed by Jack T. Barker. Both Bennie Clyde and Eugene V. Barker were pall bearers at Ophelia NEWTON-BARKERs funeral, March 13, 1940 in Waco, McLennan County, TX. Ophelia is buried at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco. My father married my mother Kathleen O'Hara Wingate in 1945 in Ft Worth and I was born in 1946 in the Cleburne Hospital in Johnson Co, TX to return to my grandmother's home in Alvarado, Johnson Co, TX to live with my mothers family while my father attended Texas Christian University. I am the only issue of this union. They divorced in 1948. (2) Clyde Buren Barker born Apr 29, 1884, Lampasses, Lampasses Co, TX, died in Waco. (3)Maude Barker, born June 24, 1880 and married a Texas Senator KNOWLES. Maude and Senator KNOWLES lived in Dallas in 1940 when Ophelia died. Senator KNOWLES was a pall bearer as well. (4) Cora BARKER born Dec 25, 1886 and married an )unknown) LEWIS. Cora died Aug 28, 1949 and is buried beside Ophelia NEWTON-BARKER in Rosemound Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County, TX. (5) W. H. BARKER male born unknown, died unknown. I apologize for this long narrative but I wanted to get what I know and what I have documented on the List, in hopes that someone would connect with this NEWTON line. I don't know what happened to Elizabeth NEWTON, Ophelia's sister, who she married or ??? From what I have seen on the internet it appears that many Samuel Newton were from the East Coast is there any one out there that has Newton's that migrated on to Ohio and then to Texas? Thank you, Sue Jane BARKER-BUMERTS [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 1999 12:25 PM Subject: NEWTON-D Digest V99 #140
You can obtain a photo copy of the Leonard book through University Microfilms International in Ann Arbor MI. 1-800-521-0600 Don Newton Decendant of Richard, Daniel, Nathanial, Simon, Hannahiah, etc. Mass, VT, Ohio ILL
>Could someone tell me the name of the book on the Newton family by >Ermina >Newton? I'm a descedant of this line and want to see if I can get >a copy >through interlibrary loan. Thanks. > >Maria Johns Brown >[email protected] The book is "Newton Genealogy" (there is a longer title, but that's enough) by Ermina Newton Leonard. It was published in 1915 by her husband, I believe. I found a microfiche copy in the Fort Worth Public Library and a hard copy in the Marlborough, MA public library. There are probably microfice copies in a number of good family history centers. A good reference librarian can tell you where the nearest copy is. I am a part of that line also; Elijah Newton was my g-g-grandfather, and in a long footnote following the entry on Elijah it mentions my mother an her siblings. Peace, Jud
Hi In answer to your question, the book is called Newton Genealogy with the following sub-titles: Genealogical, Biographical Historical being a record of the Descendants of Richard Newton of Sudbury and Marlborough, Massachusetts 1638 and yet another sub-title "with genealogies of families descended from the Immigrants: Rev. Rober Newton of Milford, Connecticut, Thomas Newton of Fairfield, Connecticut, Matthew Newton of Stonington, Connecticut, Newtons of Vriginia and Newtons near Boston. Having said all that, by far the greatest volume of information is on the descendants of Richard Newton. I, myself, would appear to be a descendant of Richard Newton through John and Elizabeth Larkin, Thomas and Record Ward, Obediah and Abigail (unknown), Phineas and Mehitable Whitney, Jonas and Tryphene Pond (hence the Pond connection). I'm still trying to make a connection between Jonas' and Tryphene's son, Abijah, and my own ggggfather, Abijah Newton. Dates appear to be right, birth locations appear to be right (there is a question over whether Abijah's daughter was born in Vermont or New York but then those borders were in question) but I cannot find that definite link. Jonas and Tryphene moved, it would appear, from Hubbardston, Worcester Co., MA possibly sometime after 1790 and Ermina only has the names of their two eldest children, Abijah and Hannah. Jonas and wife appear to have been in Milton, Chittenden Co., VT in 1800 and, in 1810 they appear to have been in Essex Co., N.Y. -- near Abijah Newton (the one I believe to be my ggggfather! But there are so many Jonas Newtons! Then by 1818 Abijah and wife (who is believed to have been a Mary Edmondson) were in what was then known as Canada West! Members of the New England Historical Genealogical Society are able to borrow this book through the NEHGS loan program. I have successfully obtained Ermina Newton Leonard's book through inter-library loan. Because my library is a university library they were able to obtain it from Brigham Young University. Interestingly it was donated to the Genealogical Society of Utah by a Noah S. Pond in 1943, then a resident of Pocatello, Idaho. He adds the following note: "The Pond ancestral line connects with the Newton people quite extensively as shown by enclosed pages of index in this volume, and I hope the Society's membership may be benefited thru the availability of this volume of the Newton tree." > > Could someone tell me the name of the book on the Newton family by > > Ermina > > Newton? I am searching for info on my gggrandfather, Dr. Thomas J. Newton who doctored in the Piney Flats, TN area, Sullivan Co. I found him & his wife, Sarah and children in 1860 census, but I don't know who his parents were or when he died or where he was buried. Any one know? Thomas was born in 1815 in TN. Thanks, Faye
