Surname lists like this one can serve many useful purposes. One is to identify valuable resources that other members may be unaware of. I'll start, with resources regarding the line of Ebenezer Newton, Sr., b. abt 1725 - d. 1812 Rutherford Co., NC, and his descendants. Some descendants remained in York Co., PA (where all of his children were born), while others migrated to NC and GA. 1. HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, V. 21, pp. 1-95, "Newton of North Carolina, Georgia and other Southern States," by Mrs. John Bennett Boddie, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1976. This reference also contains info on many collateral families, including Buchanan and McCall. 2. "The Capt. Benjamin Newton-William Downs and other Lineage History," by Posey E. Downs, (privately published). Neither reference is holy writ, and the information is not equal to a primary source, but they are both invaluable starting points for anyone interested in this branch of Newtons. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE OTHER RESOURCES ABOUT THIS LINE OF NEWTONS TO SHARE? Reiley Kidd Seattle
I would be interested in the book also, as my Newtons came from VA, and not sure of the stops in between, but they settled in Iowa..thanks for sharing.. The pages that was about our family was copied by a cousin and sent to me I will try to contact him and get the information. I was told that his mother or aunt bought it in 1930 and paid about $150. for it . It is three inches thick and about letter paper size. It only had about seven pages on our family. It may have been a geneoligy type published book . On the pages he sent me it has the Newton Crest and some information about the Newton name. It also had a picture of John Willis Newton, which I believe is his grandfather. It also had mention of one of the James with the middle name of Marion . I have not been able to find out for sure what the M. stood for in the James M. Newton that I am looking for. Will send information about book as soon as I can get it. Dottie

Dottie, What is the name of the Newton book you are speaking of? Is it still available today? Bob
Robert, Your James Newton is not the same one I believe I am looking for but I thought you might have run across him. There are so many James it is really hard to find the right one. My J. M. or James M. Newton is thought to be born in 1715 in England, a sea captain who possibaly came to east coast of Marlyand, probably Dorchester County and he or his son James came to Fairfield County ,South Carolina and then to Georgia by 1795 to99 . The tomestone in Georgia states he was born in 1715 and died in 1823, else where I found he died at the age of 94 .His son I believe was born in 1740. He or his son married a Fisher Wood and there was an Aristarchus Wood in her family. The names in the family are Charles , James , Hannah, Willis, Richard, Julia, Elizabeth, Marchus, Oliver , Ezekiel, and George. Some of this information I have found in a Newton Genology book but I believe that the information is not exactly correct according to old bible records. I believe that there were more than three James Newton in this family and the book has gotten them all mixed together. any help would be most appreciated. Dottie Newton
Linda, did you try the social security death index ?? you could possibly get a copy of his orig. application for a SS#.
> I am still seeking any information on George F. Newton. Was married to Jeanne Elizabeth Kelley during the 1920's. Had a daughter Elizabeth Jane Newton on March 15, 1923. Second wife named Esther. He was an optomotrist/optician in the San Francisco area for many years. I believe he died in the 1960's. Any information on greatly appreciated. Linda M. May [email protected] >
Mrs Brown, As far as I know this was Elizabeth NEWTON's first and sole marriage. I have no idea where or when she was born as yet. I have seen copies, not in the original, of the justice of the peace (Johm Ramsay, J P) marriage entries and it clearly says "Elizabeth Newton" when she married William Morris, snr, on 18 February 1813 (book A, page 29) This is on page 42 of Preble County, O hio Marriage Records Volume I, 1808-1830. On page 43 it shows Henry NEWTON buying the license to marry Mary HURD, Joseph NEWTON marrying Rosanna RAINS (George Brown J P, book A, page 59) on 2 March 1817, and Thomas NEWTON marrying Rebecca ANDERSON (David Semple, J P, book A, page 142) on 20 October 1825. These may be her siblings. On page 292 of History of Preble County, Ohio (R E Lowry, 1981), it mentions that Thomas NEWTON and some others came to Preble County in 1803 or the early part of 1804. This may be her father. Very shortly after the 29 October 1816 birth of son Ephraim MORRIS, from whom I descend directly, Elizabeth, husband and children moved to the Opposum den Prairie area of Randolph County, Illinois. This comes from Histo rical Sketches of Randolph County, page 106, (E J Montague) published in 1859 in the Illinois State Library. She died there on 15 January 1831. I do not think that your NEWTON line is the same as mine. Then again......... Miss Dsire de Nantes <[email protected]>

Has anyone come across any of the following in their research. All are children of Samuel NEWTON & Elizabeth (NOAKE), my 4x great grandparents, of Branscombe, Devon, England and later of Broadwey, Dorset, England. 1. James NEWTON, born 11 March 1797, Branscombe. Thought to have been a sailor. 2. Isaac NEWTON, bapt 9 June 1799, Broadwey. It was said that he 'died & was buried in Jersey'. 3. William NEWTON, bapt 18 January 1801, Broadwey. Married a 'Londoner' and was a 'Wine merchant of Madeira'. 4. Elizabeth NEWTON, bapt 24 October 1802, Broadwey. Married in 'London to a man named DEMEER?' 5. Israel NEWTON, born in Broadwey. Married in Weymouth, Dorset and had 6 or 7 children. The few biographical details above were written in a notebook by a cousin of the children. Any information would be appreciated. Claudie, I have nothing on Nercisa Newton in N.C., but I know that William Newton had children and it is likely some went to that area. He was the son of Joseph and Helena Newton of Greenbriar, Va. It is now part of West Virginia. Go to the Greenbriar Genweb site and put out queries and see what you get from there. Keep in touch and let me know what you find and if I run across anything, will let you know ! Pat
Pat, Do you have anything on Nercisa Newton who married George W. Cline. Feb. 4, 1852 in Haywood County, NC? She was my great grandmother. My only NEWTON is Elizabeth NEWTON who married Warwickshire, England-born William MORRIS, snr, in Preble County, Ohio on 18 February 1813. I have no birth-date or birth-place for her, but she died in Randolph County, Illinois on 15 January 1831 where the family moved in 1816 (after a 29 October 1816 birth). Has anyone any idea whom her parents and siblings were ? I appreciate any help. THANK YOU ! Miss Dsire de Nantes <[email protected]>
