My great grandfather James M Newitt came right over from England maybe around the 1870's or so??? I have cousins in England that have been working on a family tree - from their side, but it stops short of what happended after James came over here. I will refer to that tree once I get a copy. I think it should have a better date when he came over. I do know that my dad (William Wayne Newitt) talked about James working with two other cousins or brothers, and they weren't getting along well. From the sound of it, your two folks are the two other cousins James was not getting along with. Well.. who knows. I am very interested in finding out more about their lives in chicago, and what became of them, of course. My grandfather - Thomas Wayne Newitt-was James Newitt's son, born over here. He grew up in Chicago, and lived there until age 20 or so, then came over to Michigan to look for his sister. That's about all I know. I have a lot of questions to research. Sorry about rattling on , but thank you for your interest. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. However, knowing this surname, I suspect they will end up related and there are lots of records available in Thame. I visited Thame in January - Wonderful people! ----- Original Message ----- From: sanderson To: janab@websweave.net Sent: Saturday, June 10, 2006 2:16 PM Subject: newitt/jakes I have just found the Newitt family information that is on the website purely by accident, gosh what a shock. I am Arthur Jakes daughter and Mary Matilda Jakes nee Newitt was my Grandmother. Fredrick and Mary Jakes had 3 children Phyllis was born first then the twins Fredrick and Arthur. It was decided that looking after 3 young children was going to be too much for my grandmother so the youngest twin was to be sent to family in Thame. The youngest twin was my father Arthur ( although now I have seen both the twins birth certificates my father is listed as the eldest so someone made a mistake somewhere!) Dad was sent to live at Whirlbush Farm and up until now I did not know the name of the people who looked after him. He spoke of going to school from the farm and could remember walking to meet boys from other farms on his walk to school. I know he had very fond memories of his time at the farm and with the family. he did loose a finger in one of the machines at the farm, his brother turned the handle when he and the parents were visiting one day. From what I have found out he was back with his parents by the age of 10 and living in Southall Middlesex. My Grandfather worked on the railway. I had heard that the woman who bought my Father up had run away and no one knew where she went, amazing seeing how close it was. We took my Father to Thame when he was 80, about 13 years ago now. My husband asked him if he could remember the name of the farm he had lived on. My Father was never good at remembering names but he remembered Whirlbush Farm. We found the farm and I remember him looking longingly across the fields at the house, he had so many happy memories. It would appear to me after reading what you have written about Edith that she repayed the favour for the Newitt family taking care of her and her sister by looking after my Father. For that I am very grateful. I loved my Grandmother very much and spent a lot of time with her but I can not understand how she gave up one of her babies. Phyllis married Fredrick Cleverly and had a son Terrence (Terry to the family) I have not heard from Terry for some years and he was not married when I last heard from him. Phyllis Fred and Terry lived in the next road to my Grandparents till Terry left home and his parents died. The other twin Fredrick married Isabel Doris Sarah Fuller who lived in Ickenham and Fred and Isabel continued to live in ickenham until their death. They had no children but Aunt Isabel and I were as close as Mother and Daughter could be, she died just under two years ago at the age of 98. Alice Amelia Sheffield nee Newitt married and had a son called Ron presumably Ronald although I am not sure. Her husband died when Ron was very young and she struggled to bring him up but never married again. I know that one of her sisters helped he I believe her name was Ginnie ( do not know her birth name) and she had a tearoom near Hampton Court. I also believe she owned the house that Aunt Mil and Ron lived in Willoughby Road Kingston. Aunt Mil or Alice Amelia is buried in the churchyard at Thame over and between her parents grave she had requested to be buried in that churchyard but as there was no more space it was the only thing that could be done. I am sure none of them minded. Ron married after his mothers death and lived in Eastbourne until his death. Denise Sanderson

Hello Patricia I would be interested in a photo of Abe Newitt. Someone originally advised me that Abe's father, William George Newitt and his wife Louisa Eaton immigrated to New Orleans in 1852, however it must have been between 1858 an 1862, as their 7th child Thomas was born in Chatteris in 1857 and their eighth was born in Indiana, USA in 1863, then Abe about 1864. Regards Alan.
