The best guess that I have is that Rose Mary Boden (1828-1906) was married to John Moonan (b ~1822). They both came to New Orleans from Co. Louth, Ireland via Liverpool with an infant son John in 1849. It appears that Rose Mary Boden Moonan might have been widowed and remarried Michael Newitt sometime between 1850 and 1880. During that time she had 5 children, including my ancestor Andrew Vincent Newitt (1856-1905) and was widowed again. So the Newitt connection may be that she was a Moonan and gave birth to John Moonan (b ~1822) who was your ancestor and she also was a Newitt and bore my ancestors. I have not mapped out any descendants from John Moonan, but perhaps they lead to you. If you are on Ancestry, you can look at my Newitt family tree, which I have kept public. Jack is my father. I think Cynthia was talking about Louis Andrew Newitt (1897-1976) and his wife Agatha Austin Newitt (1901-1977) in New Orleans (my grandparents on my father's side). Louis Austin (1923-2006) who moved to Houston was my uncle (and your grandfather, apparently). Agatha Louise Newitt "Tiny" (1925-2001), who resided in Nachitoches was his sister and my aunt. I just started here, but I have traced this New Orleans Newitt line to Louis Andrew Newitt's father, Andrew Vincent Newitt (1856-1905) and grandparents Michael Newitt (?) and Rose Mary Boden Moonan Newitt (1828-1906). The latter two may or may not have come to the US independently from Ireland (I found a 17 year old Irish "Mary Moonan" on a passenger list in 1841 out of Liverpool, a 25 year old Irish Mary Moonan on a passenger list in 1855 out of Liverpool, and a 17 year old Irish Mary Newitt in 1841 out of Liverpool). I would appreciate any source information that anyone can provide for how and when this branch of the Newitt family came to the US and how and when they made their way to New Orleans. I just started researching my family history. So far it seems that my 2nd great grandmother (Rose Mary Boden Moonan Newitt) may have come from Ireland (as Mary Moonan on a passenger list) in 1841 eventually settling in New Orleans with my 2nd great grandfather Michael Newitt. There is a 1900 census document for my great grandfather (Andrew Vincent Newitt) that reports both his parents (above) were born in Ireland. If anyone has research of Newitt or Moonan families in Ireland or of their immigration into the US around 1840-1850, I would appreciate a response so that we can share research. Thanks, - John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Ten years ago I posted a message to this list regarding the research of the Newitt family from Chatteris, Cambridgeshire ( http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEWITT/2002-06/1023153038 ). I added a descendant chart of Thomas Newitt and Mary Martin. I have done much research since then and have added extra information and corrected some errors that was on the original chart. As this list is very quiet now, I hope this information that I am posting will help future researchers. I have had contact with Ken Forbes, John Youngblood, Pot Millard and Colin Heading. I am not sure if they are still around. Descendants of the Newitt family have settled in the USA, Canada, Kenya, Australia and New Zealand, and many other counties in England. 3. Hi Alan, Excellent! This is exactly the kind of thing we need to do to keep the info out there and vital for everyone to see! The more search engines are able to pick up names, the better chance new researchers will have to link into their lines. Yes, the list has been quiet, probably as part of the idea that the only resources available are "pay per view." I can tell you I was able to get more accurate info in the beginning of the internet by collaborative work with fellow researchers than I have since. I was lucky in that my research is pretty much complete now but for two huge brick walls (not Newitt) so now I dedicate my time to helping others researching my same surnames. Thank you for this offering and I welcome other researchers to post their lines here so we can expand our collective Newitt wealth! Author: JanaM_B Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.newitt/46.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: So we know from the two censuses that his wife is the Ellen reported in 1900 in Park County, CO. We also know he died betw. 1880 and 1900... In 1880, we know he was 35 years old, thus b. abt. 1845 in England and that both his parents were b. in England as well. In 1880, Ellen was 22 (b. abt. 1858) and their child, RB Jr. is one and b. in CO. Living adjacent to them are likely his younger brother and family: Jos. (33), Annie (30), and children Francis (5), Annie (3), and Jos Jr. (8/12). Francis could be a clue to the name of the father of the two boys... The 1900 census tells us Ellen is a widow who immigrated in 1865 and that she was m. 22 years, that son is IDed as Robert, so that pretty much proves the father's name was Robert as well. Given that the youngest child was b. in 1888, that pretty much puts the death of RB Sr. to after then. Now check this out from this link http://www.parkcoarchives.org/: "Garo, Colorado Garo was a ranching and railroad town from the 1880s until 1936 when the Colorado & Southern Narrow-gauge railroading ended. Garo is a short version of Guiraud (early South Park ranchers who had a large cattle and hay ranch near the railroad line there). The Turner general store and post office was beside the railroad at Garo. The next series of stories center around the Garo general store started by Chubb Newitt and later run by the Turner family. This first action occurred around 1898. According to Wilbur Lewis in his interview of July 2002 of stories he had heard. Wilbur: "Then in 1891 he (Chubb Newitt) got elected County Commissioner, but he was still running the store. He was in the store one day and some fellow came in and they were looking at the guns. They happened to drop one that had ammunition and it went off and shot poor old Chubb in the butt and he died of blood poisoning." Had you seen this? It establishes that Chubb and Ellen must have m. abt 1869, in the USA! - and this also tells us that they must have been in Ohio abt 1879 as that is where RB Jr. was born. RB should show up in the 1851 and 1861 UK census - I can look for that if you need help with it. To get a copy of his death record, you will need to contact the County Vital Records - here is what I find on his birth from Free BMD in the UK: Name: Robert Newitt Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1846 Registration district: Thame Inferred County: Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire Volume: 16 Birth Index 1837-1915 This interests me as there is a HUGE cluster of Newitts in Buckinghamshire (it is where my own line comes from - see here: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jmbhome/1newitt.html). Hope this helps... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have the same basic census information that you posted. In the book 'Bayou Salado' it says that it was Robert 'Chubb' Newitt, but I do not see a Robert listed in the census but it is probably the one listed as RB Newitt. He died in Garo when someone looking at a gun he had for sale, dropped it and it accidentially discharged, hitting him the posterior and he died of blood poisoning. No date. I do not know how to look up death records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
