Think of it terms of Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. You may have Word or Excel open and working on a document or spreadsheet, but then decide you need to view another word or excel document attached to an email. Your computer is programmed to open a word document or excel spread sheet in their appropriate application. Opening that second document, irregardless of what it is, does nto affect the first document in any manner. The same analogy can be made for FTM. Part of the FTM installation procedure automatically programs your computer to open a gedcom file in FTM, being the program designed to read them. Opening the second gedcom file doesn't affect the first file.
