You can check out this site http://www.tribecaexpress.com/firewallfaq.htm#head_whatis for FAQ's on firewall. They can be a good thing and some home users have them if they work at home. Don't be scared into thinking you need a firewall to protect your system. There are other ways to protect it for the home user such as turning off your file sharing. It also depends on your connection to the internet. I'm not real fond of cable modem myself because you are sharing your pipe with others. I used to work for an internet company and I never heard of anyone "hacking" into the residential users system and we didn't sell firewall to the residential user because like your ISP said, it's not really needed.
