    3. Hi Roy, Please tell your cousin that we are not dangerous to the public at large. It is the dead ones we won't let rest until they tell their stories. We may be a pain to live people and some may become his patients after we drive them crazy but we are not dangerous to them while alive because then we would have to research their records too. haha. Thanks for the laugh, Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: Roy Stockdill <roystock@compuserve.com> To: <NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 08, 2000 7:12 AM Subject: [NEWGEN] Are genealogists sane? 1. [NEWGEN] Are genealogists sane? A psychiatrist's view
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. I HAVE been musing on the somewhat peculiar nature of our hobby. A few years ago I had a conversation with a cousin of mine who is a psychiatrist. He was intrigued when I told him I was into genealogy and asked what I did, exactly. I told him that a genealogist was someone who......... (a) Spends most of their waking hours with an obsessive interest in dead people. (b) Has a disturbing habit of sticking a tape recorder into the faces of elderly relatives and badgering them for hours with silly questions. (c) Will go to a funeral and announce that they aren‘t remotely interested in the deceased‘s money or the family silver but would kill for a cardboard box full of old photographs. (d) Will spend hours in a cramped record office sandwiched between two people, one with a hacking cough and the other who has had several pints of beer and a curry for lunch and is making the appropriate emissions. (e) Frets and mourns inconsolably because they can‘t discover where their great-grandfather was born. (f) Spends hours on end hunched over a computer endlessly inputting bizarre information and talking to people on the other side of the Atlantic with a similar obsession; (g) Is willing to travel many miles in the pouring rain to haunt derelict graveyards and write down inscriptions from crumbling old stones. After considering this information gravely, my cousin made the observation that if any patient came to him with the above symptoms he would beyond doubt class them as mentally certifiable and have them instantly committed to somewhere where they wouldn‘t be a danger to the public at large! 3. Mr. Spock of Star Trek visited a remote planet in the far reaches of the universe where all the inhabitants were made of india rubber. He made love to a beautiful woman and told her: ”Now all your descendants will be vulcanized.” Just before the Battle of Hastings, one of William the Conqueror‘s chief lieutenants was grumbling to his squire about the lousy horse he had been given. He complained: ”Nobody would turn a knight out on a dog like this!” A British government survey in 1926 to try and determine future population trends discovered that 64.8 per cent of all the women in Britain aged between 20 and 55 had only ever slept with one man. Does anyone know who the greedy so-and-so was? Did you know that...if all the genealogists in the world who fall asleep in front of their computers at 2.0 o‘clock in the morning were laid end to end they‘d be a lot more comfortable? George Sand (1804-1876), the celebrated French novelist, was as famous for her love affairs with prominent artistic figures as she was for her writing. Amongst others, she had a long relationship wtih the composer Frederic Chopin. So that‘s where the term, the ”sex and shoppin' novel" came from? An Irishman was descended from a long line of literature-loving ancestors who instilled in him a deep knowledge of the classics. One day he went for a job on a building site and the foreman said he must ask him a question or two to make sure he was qualified.”Do you know the difference between a girder and a joist?" the foreman asked. ”Ah, to be sure, that‘s an easy one," the Irishman said. ”Goethe wrote Faust and Joyce wrote Ulysses." An ancestor of mine was killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn with General Custer. Big mistake, really. He was brewing tea in the next field and only went over to borrow a cup of sugar. I am new to the list. Hi my name is Wendy, your list sounds very friendly and helpful. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for two problems I have please. Firstly I have an aunt who is almost 86, she would really love to know the names of her aunts and uncles, my problem is the family moved between census 1881 and where her mother got married from in 1900's. They lived in Leicester, her grandfather worked in a shoe factory. Any easy way to find an area of Leicester, to send for the films for? The family name was Bonnett. (Henry and Elizabeth) The other problem I have is my g.grandfather, he died in Ireland in 1931 how would I find where he is buried please?I have his death certificate, just hopeing if I found a grave, maybe some more of the family might appear. Many thanks have a nice day. Wendy. Australia.

    3. Hi all -Did anyone see this? I bought a copy! Gloria In this week's People Magazine (dated September 4, 2000), there is a small story about Cyndi Howells on page 35. The story also contains a nice picture (of course, I'm biased). It's gratifying to see that genealogy on the Internet occasionally receives mainstream media attention. The article appears in the English language U.S. edition of People Magazine. I don't know whether or not it is also in other editions of People around the globe. The issue's cover looks something like this: http://image.pathfinder.com/people/weekly/images/cover.jpg I thought that the users of Cyndi's List might find the article interesting.
