    1. [NEWGEN] AURORA ON HALLOWEEN?
    2. Jerry Robke
    3. Those of you who live in the correct latitude may see Northern Lights this evening. Rose http://spaceweather.com/ AURORA ON HALLOWEEN? There is a slight (5 to 10%) chance of mid-latitude aurora on Halloween night. The waxing crescent Moon will sink below the horizon shortly after sunset, and many Trick-or-Treaters will be outdoors under dark skies. It's a good time to watch for faint Northern Lights.

French and his marriage to Ella Leora Misner and their son, John who married Harriet Dimmack and they had 10 children. All of these children and their descendants go by the name of Reid, and their are a lot of them, buy they are really John FRENCH's and the descendants of William D. French. As far as I have been able to discern, there were NO children from Ella's marriage to Walter E. Reid. I wish someone knew when and where William and Ella were married, probably in New York, where she lived with her parents, but they lived in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI. There is a recording of her marriage to W.E. Reid in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI. I sent to MI vital records and they had no copy. Later I discovered it was found in the Grand Rapids Public Library - Index to Michigan research found in genealogical periodicals by Maud Quigley (main auther Western Michigan Genealogy Society (Grand Rapids, Michigan) (added author) book of compilation of aids and articles found in genealogical periodicals house in the Grand Rapids Public Library. (That was the way the entire source was written. Is there anyone out there at all that could possibly look that up for me? It it apparently listed by bride (twice for her, once as Ella Misner and again by her first married name French) and by groom, Walter E. Reid. If I could find out the date this would help figure out a lot of things. I have been searching this for so long it would be a very happy day for me if I could ever find it! 1. [NEWGEN] Salem Witch Trials .. More info
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. In January of 1692, the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris of Salem Village became ill. When they failed to improve, the village doctor, William Griggs, diagnosed bewitchment and put into motion a "witch hysteria" that would ultimately result in the death by hanging of nineteen men and women. In addition one man was pressed (crushed) to death for refusing trial; seventeen others died in prison, and the lives of many were irrevocably changed. Many factors lead to the witch hysteria of Salem. There were the daily stresses of 17th-century colonial life; a strong belief in Satan, factions of village fanatics, rivalry with a nearby town, a recent small pox epidemic and the threat of attack by warring tribes created a fertile ground for fear and suspicion. Prisons were soon filled with more than 150 men and women from towns surrounding Salem. Their names had been "cried out" by tormented young girls who claimed the "specters" of witches in the village were tormenting them. Many of the accused were tricked or forced to confess and all would await trial for a crime punishable by death in 17th-century New England, the practice of witchcraft. downloaded from: http://www.ancestry.com/home/celebrate/salem/index.html

    1. [NEWGEN] Salem Witches Database from Ancestry
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. New site on Ancestry; FREE, always the best price, at present. Description: This historical database lists over 200 individuals accused of witchcraft in New England between 1647 and 1697. The scope of the list is limited to individuals who were formally accused and underwent a trial process in a town court proceeding. Be aware that many "accusations" took place on an informal basis or did not actually reach trial, hence these individuals would not be listed in the database. Though the database is entitled "Salem Witches" database, many of those listed in this collection were accused before or after the Salem trial in 1692 and resided in areas outside Salem, most notably Andover, Gloucester, Rowley, and other towns in Massachusetts, as well as towns in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. The database lists the year the accused stood trial, first and last name, town or village where the trial took place, and the outcome of the trial (confession, acquittal, execution, escape, etc.). Extended Description: Source Information: Ancestry.com, comp. Salem Witches. [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2000. Original information from surviving legal records from the towns and villages in question and appearing in Godbeer, Richard, comp. 1. [NEWGEN] What Year Could We Claim To Search Our Family To? OFFICIALLY THAT IS!

    3. June Ridsdale wrote..... >>Does anyone have any ideas regarding how far back we can honestly say we can go in genealogy [and be documented that we have a genuine family line!] It is very difficult to read the Parish Records, as an example, unless one made a study of the ancient handwriting. The inks are faded. The pages get torn and/or brittle etc. So many things that would make it impossible to get into the past beyond certain years. Some ministers recorded events in the early 1700's by saving as much space as they could, and the writing is not only faded, but very squished into small areas. There must be some general opinions on this subject. The reason I ask is because I have heard people say they go back to some historical figure that existed in 800 or 1200 or similar. Is that likely to be an official line or a figment of imagination?<< THERE are absolutely no hard and fast rules on this, or even generalisations. Every single case is individual. As to getting back to 800, 1200 or whatever, the number of people who can achieve this is tiny and almost entirely restricted to those who can prove BEYOND DOUBT a connection to a royal line. For instance, via female lines - known as "gateway" ancestors - there are undoubtedly many people who have a descent from Alfred the Great (849-899), King of Wessex, but the number who can actually prove every link in the chain is another matter! Likewise, the Emperor Charlemagne (742-814) was estimated as long ago as 1949 to have some 20 million living descendants and I expect the number has probably doubled by now (Bush and Gore are claimed to be among them, I heard). Descendants of English monarchs like Edward I and Edward III and Charles II are legion (the latter in entirely illegitimate lines) and the descendants of more recent monarchs like George III and Queen Victoria are widespread also. In general terms, the ordinary person is doing well in my opinion to get back much beyond the early 1700s (most of my lines run out in this period), since even if you find people with the right names in the right parish registers you cannot always be absolutely certain without other supporting evidence (such as wills) that they are yours, especially if they had common surnames! I am talking UK genealogy here, of course. Theoretically at least, some people may be able to get back to Tudor times, since parish registers began in 1538, though few survive from that date. Before that the sources become rarer and are largely confined to the well-off families who had lands and properties and who were, therefore, more likely to appear in manorial records and such like. Ironically, though, the two classes of people who were best recorded are the rich and the very poor - the former for obvious reasons (they would probably have documents relating to property etc) and the latter because they were often likely to be found in parish Poor Law records. It was the great mass of ordinary people in between, those who were neither very rich nor very poor (the ancestors of most of us, in fact!) who never did anything that caused their names to be written down anywhere. Another irony is that it is often easier to trace a relatively poor family who remained in one place for many generations than a wealthier, more upwardly mobile family who moved around a lot. However, I fear there are many people in genealogy who allow themselves to indulge in wishful thinking and will lay claim to all kinds of ancestors that they simply cannot prove. A word of caution is appropriate here perhaps - never accept those pedigrees in Ancestry File (on the LDS web site) or on the Broderbund World Family Tree CDs without checking them yourself. And as for those who claim descent from biblical figures and other luminaries in the ancient world (BC, that is).....AAAARGH, keep them away from me! 2. New music, new NTT winner give a listen. On the NTT song this week you have to listen carefully to the xylophone playing the melody, the 'background" has captured the foreground and makes listening a bit of a chore. Dr. Bill (Bill@Dr-Fox.Com) .
