    1. Re: [NEWGEN] MEMORIES OF PEARL HARBOR IN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY
    2. Antoinette Waughtel Sorensen
    3. Sally, you certainly stirred up memories. Although I was a mere 8 years of age, I remember daddy coming home that night and telling us that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and turned on the radio to listen to both Gabriel Heattor (sp) and Walter Winchell. We had a battery operated radio and the 6 o'clock and the 9 o'clock news were a must for him. I remember later of airplanes flying over our house and I was so scared they were Japanese that I took all my brothers & sisters and we crowded into our parents bedroom closet as it was "really" dark in there and I didn't think they could see us. At that time (and I being the eldest) there were 6 of us (we eventually became 12 of us). I remember the huge Air Warden sign we had displayed next to the kitchen in the hallway going to the upstairs. The razor strap hung next to that (weird that I would remember that <grin> now). Three of my mother's 5 brothers served in WWII, and they came home. Many of my mother's cousins were there also. The letters we wrote that were v-mail and the words that were sometimes marked out so as to not give an actual destination/site where they were written from. I wrote to the eldest uncle (my favorite ??) who was in the Navy in the South Pacific. I still have his picture with his 16-month growth beard. Thanks for stirring those memories. 3. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941--a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attached by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." These words, spoken by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his war message to Congress on 8 December 1941, still stir emotions. The memory of that day is often permanently embedded in the minds and hearts of everyone who was old enough to remember it. Memories of historical events like the bombing of Pearl Harbor can add a deeper, more personal element to your family history, tying your family to world history and placing them in the context of the times in which they lived. Were you born then? If so, do you remember how you heard the news of Pearl Harbor? Where were you? What were your feelings? If you were not born yet, or you were too young to remember, are there other family members who do remember it? Ask them about it. Write down and preserve these memories for future generations, so that they too can see and more thoroughly understand the personal impact of these events on generations past. 3. Hi Roy, Yes, the family name was originally LANGSTROTH. And I meant the early 1700s, not the 1600s (my tired fingers can't type!). I know they come from Yorkshire but haven't made the jump across the pond with my research on this family so I'm not positive of a more specific location. A 4th cousin did and he assures me they end (or start?) in Arncliffe, Yorkshire. But I haven't done the work or verified his yet so I can't say for sure. My direct branch seems to have emigrated to America around 1720 although an uncle was here before 1709. Lots of Johns, Philips, Martins, Isaacs and a few Bartholomews but no Stephens to date. If he puts in an appearance, I'll keep you in mind. I'm aware of the pitfalls with IGI and Ancestral Files. Just for laughs one day, I built a family tree from the "prodigious pedigree of the Yorkshire Longstroth/Langstroths" as you stated. What a hoot! Children were born several years after their father was deceased. I still haven't figured the hows of that one out. Thanks for the tip on Somerset. I didn't know that - some of the records I have state Somersetshire. Question - with your one-name study of STOCKDILL, do you research the name STOCKDALE? The name comes up on the Greene Co., PA mailing list. An obituary was posted just today for that surname. Check out their archives if your interested - it's PAGREENE. Cindy in Southern California

    3. John, if you will look at my list, you will see England surnames. Not sure if I included the Langworthy in my list, but we are not doubt tracking some of the same family. I will email you about the story of my Langworthy search. (My Langworthy connection is in England) However I did find lots of them in the East one time on the internet, and I will have to see if I jotted it down as to where. I was so surprised to see so many and very early in the records. Sue Ellen
