And John, do you agree that these "fancy little tidbits" as I tend to call them, belong on the NOTES page of the ancestral person we enter. Doesn't it add just a bit of nostalgia of those days gone by with that beloved ancestor. I was 17 when this grandmother died and I wanted to climb into the grave with her coffin. I loved her that much, that little 4'9" and just as round as she was tall grandmother of mine. I was named for her, (my dad being an only child), my youngest daughter is Sabrina Antoinette, Sabrina's daughter is Malinda Antoinette and Malinda's little Tori is Victoria Antoinette. I hope to live to see Tori have "Isal Antoinette" (Isal for my mother as this little girl is my mother all over again). Nostalgia at times is great medicine. And what memories it stirs. Thanks for listening to this "elderly" mother, grandmother and great grandmother (and I am proud of being each one). Or can you tell????? <grin> Antoinette waughtel@oz.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Rathbone" <jrathbon@dreamscape.com> To: <NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2000 9:09 AM Subject: Re: [NEWGEN] Recent Unpleasantness > >From John Rathbone at jrathbon@dreamscape.com > > Antoinette's story of her grandmother and explaining thunder reminded me of > back when I was a lad, growing up along the banks of the Hudson River. > There was no reason for me to doubt my grandfather when he assured me it was > just Rip Van Winkle and "the little men" bowling, " 'way up there!" Hi all, It is important for people to understand the difference between "history" and "legend". Apparently Roy Stockdill doesn't see the importance of valuable legends. Whether the story is true or not is irrelevent. The important thing is the lesson from the story. Bill Cribbs (not Dr. Bill) Obituary Central http://www.obitcentral.com >Thank you, Dr. Bill. Thank you, Dr. Bill. I really hated to take the stance I did when I wrote the gentleman in question, but there was no way I could not "believe" that the little girl going out to feed the hungry marauding Indians, "might" not have been true. "Make believe" or plain "belief" is a wonderful way of teaching our children, their children, etc., that although these "happenings" in the most did not happen, but very well could have happened, in doing unto others as we would want them to do for us. I still today love the story of my grandmother saying that the horrible loud scary sound of thunder when I was a small child, was a soothing "wonder" of "It's just a covered wagon going over the clouds". We all knew that people travelled way back when by covered wagon. We didn't stop to think of how in the world did that covered wagon get up in the sky <LOL>. Thank you again for being there with us and for us. Hi Karen. My understanding of wards is that it applies to different sections of a city, as they are sectioned off as wards--if you find the ward your ancestor lived in, then you can find the section of the city he lived in. Some libraries or museums do have maps showing the wards of a city. Hope this helps Phyllis ---- Original Message ----- From: <Flmom41@aol.com> To: <NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2000 10:15 PM Subject: [NEWGEN] familysearch meanings > I hope someone can help me with this. I sincerely regret having to take the action I did against Roy Stockdill (who, by the way has been removed from other lists for much the same reasons), but I refuse to stand by and have my ListMembers belittled because they can accept a story as a Parable and learn from it. This Holiday Season, I hope each of you will remember all of the stories you have learned from small child to adulthood, and remember the lesson each one taught. Please pass these stories along to you own children and grandchildren. I hope each of you will renew your belief in Santa Claus for, as adults, we know he represents the Great One who listens to our prayers and in His own way, and in His own time, answers them. What do you do when you don't know the date of death..all that is on her grave marker is MOTHER.. My g-g-grandfather died in Pa 1884 befor DCs were required in his county so I cannot get his... >From John Rathbone at jrathbon@dreamscape.com G'Day, Jim and All! Thank you, Jim, for stating my own feelings so nicely. The story could have happened, but -- in all likelihood -- probably did not. Who knows? And, as a story to entertain most of us, who really cares? But it certainly is a message of hope which is most welcome around this time of year, no? I, for one, enjoyed the tale - whether "tall" or not! And, yes, I will try to remember it to tell my grandchildren because, like most folk tales, there is a good point to be made. Remember, those were hard times. Fortunate, indeed, was the infant who lived to die of old age -- look at all the gravestones standing in mute testimony across our land. And what was "old age" then? Somewhere around 45 years? Not all deaths were due to murder, but many times natural disasters and disease took their toll, too. "But, again, that's just one man's opinion..." -----Original Message----- From: allenjm@bellsouth.net <allenjm@bellsouth.net> To: NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com <NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, December 12, 2000 10:11 AM Subject: [NEWGEN] The Story and Ancient Brit Comments >I took the story to be an interesting bit of folklore appropriate for >the time of the year with a message of love and kindness that should be >shared.
