    3. The stories make them real, not their dates of birth and death. One thing I've been "collecting" is the story of how couples met. I've added it to each family group. When I asked my grandmother, she told me this heartwarming story but then added, "you can't add this to your family history". I was disappointed but I agreed. Well, my grandmother passed away three weeks ago. As a tribute to my grandparents, I am adding the story of how they met and why Christmas meant so much to them to our family history. 1. [NEWGEN] New Wisconsin Cemetery Database Available on Web
    2. For those of you with ancestors, relatives, or ancestral links crossing through Wisconsin, and particularly Green Lake County, Waushara County, and Winnebago County, the largest Cemetery in Berlin [Green Lake County, but bordering on Waushara County and only a couple of miles from Winnebago County border], Oakwood Cemetery, is listed on Genealogy Exchange at the following URL: http://www.genexchange.org/cemreg.cfm?state=wi&county=greenlake Almost 6,000 burials listed. I've already found several of my relatives there. If you have family that at one time or another lived in this area of Wisconsin, there's a good chance there are relatives in this cemetery. First death buried there is listed as 1801, although as I recall, the city officially began in 1847 or thereabouts. If you have friends or relatives or family that have been looking in Central Wisconsin or as some call it "Wisconsin's Heartland", please let them know about this resource. It's great. With all good wishes, James J. Carey Washington, DC

    3. Hi Rose.... I live in southeast Iowa and we got between 10-13 inches and it's been snowing and blowing all day again today. The first snowfall is always beautiful. At my age though, I can't say I'm crazy about getting out in it. Couldn't go to work Monday night because I couldn't even get out of the driveway let alone down the street. They called all the snowplows in off the streets and highways because they couldn't keep up with the snow and blowing snow. Well, I better go out and see if I can find the car and warm her up. You wouldn't want some of this snow would you? Take care. Donna in very, very snowy and cold Iowa Brrrrr Jerry Robke wrote: > Some of you are in St. Louis I know. 3. Dr. Bill, Thank you for standing up for us! When I sent that story, I thought it was worth sending, I also did not mean to start a tizzy here. A few have e-mailed me and Thanked me for sending it. I am glad you liked it as it had a good meaning and the story was interesting. I always put tales and or a story in on my notes. One never knows if they are true. Even if not......they are great for the reader to get an idea of a time or place. One example for me, I was told that I was related to Betsy Ross...I thought."yeah... right..... sure I am, and also related to a King or Queen" After doing research, one of my Holdeman's married her aunt or cousin(would have to check) anyway, the "tale" was true! One of my Holdeman's was related to Betsy Ross. I have said this many times....."this is a great list to be on" Gloria

    3. Thank you Phyllis. This is something that I have done and I was more or less asking if it was done by others also. It is wonderful to remember these little items I lived in Illinois from 1935 to 1940 when we moved back to Washington state (and where I am still) but I always wanted to "go back" and in 1990 it was finally a realized trip. There were no busses, trains, etc from Effingham where I was staying to Stewardson where I had lived, and then only one taxi which I took and asked if he could pick me up that evening around 6 which would give me about 8 hours to roam this little town of 600+ people and according to my late grandmother we were all related in one way or another. I got out of the cab, in front of a little store (which I did not remember at all) but next to the park where I had played for those early years of my childhood. Across the street from the park was where my grandparents had lived but the house did not look the same as I had remembered. But as I looked down the street, and saw the house where I had lived for those few "younger" years ~ what did I see ~ ME, riding my big tricycle around the sidewalk that circled the left side of the house. I had to go down there. Oh the memories that flooded through me. I saw the living room where my sister was born, the back bedroom where my brother was born (and this brought back the memories of the Dr dropping a pair of scissors on my baby brother's head and to this day he has a scar there) and all the other things that had been locked up came pouring out. I was 6 years old when we left there and I have gone back twice since. In 1992 I took one of my 15 year old grandson's with me. He saw farms, I mean farms, for the first time in his life. He traipsed through cemeteries, courthouses, libraries, etc. What a time we had. Well, reckon this is enough of my reminiscing and had better get back to today <grin>. Christmas is coming!! Take care. Antoinette waughtel@oz.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phyllis A. 3. Antoinette I loved your story, and yes I would definitely add these tidbits to this ancestral person. I have many such items added on my ancestors in my notes, I state as to where each "Tidbit" came from, a story told or from some old county history book or whatever, as it adds so much to the family history, not just names and dates, these stories make our ancestors live and lets us know about some of the trials they went through in their life. I recently sent an update of our family history to my son, who immediately emailed me back saying "Wow Mom what a story, send me more on the other relatives." So you see the relatives who really don't have a lot of interest in the family history, really set up and take notice once they start reading all the little stories that accompany any family history, as they start seeming like a real person and not just a name and date. Also, it is so neat that you can keep passing the name on down your family line. and to make sure this story lives and gets passed on down through the generations and how much this ancestor meant to you, I would definitely add it to your notes. Phyllis > And John, do you agree that these "fancy little tidbits" as I tend to call > them, belong on the NOTES page of the ancestral person we enter.
