? - It is a British Christmas tradition that a wish made while mixing the Christmas pudding will come true only if the ingredients are stirred in a clockwise direction. ? - The tradition of Christmas lights dates back to when Christians were persecuted for saying Mass. A simple candle in the window meant that Mass would be celebrated there that night. ? - Yuletide-named towns in the United States include Santa Claus, located in Arizona and Indiana, Noel in Missouri, and Christmas in both Arizona and Florida. ? - The classic animal crackers box is designed with a string handle because the animal-shaped cookie treats, introduced in 1902 as a Christmas novelty, were packaged so they could be hung from Christmas trees. ? - Sending red Christmas cards to anyone in Japan constitutes bad etiquette, since funeral notices there are customarily printed in red. ? - When distributing gifts in Holland, St. Nicholas is accompanied by his servant, Black Peter; who is responsible for actually dropping the presents down the chimneys. However, legend claims that Peter also punishes bad children by putting them in a bag and carrying them away to Spain. ? - Theodore Roosevelt, a staunch conservationist, banned Christmas trees in his home, even when he lived in the White House. His children, however, smuggled them into their bedrooms. ? - Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria of England, was credited with introducing the German custom of the Christmas tree into the English home in 1841. ? - In the British armed forces it is traditional that officers wait on the men and serve them their Christmas dinner. This dates back to a custom from the Middle Ages.

I love these. My funny questions were not asked at Tech Support but asked of many people on this list who had the patience to try to understand my question. Happy Holidays to All of You Rose Here are some more conversations which had actually happened between help desk people and their customers. Tech Support: "Is your computer on a separate telephone line?" Customer: "No." (clicks the button to log on to our service) Tech Support: "Well then we can't--" Customer: "It says 'no dial tone'." Tech Support: "That's because you're on the line with me right now. You need to--" Customer: "No, that's not it. It does this all the time. I just have to try a few times, and it will let me through." Tech Support: "No, ma'am. It's not even trying to dial right now because you're on the phone with me." Customer: "It must be busy. I'll try again later." -=+=- Customer: "I'm having trouble installing Microsoft Word." Tech Support: "Tell me what you've done." Customer: "I typed 'A:SETUP'." Tech Support: "Ma'am, remove the disk and tell me what it says." Customer: "It says '[PC manufacturer] Restore and Recovery disk'." Tech Support: "Insert the MS Word setup disk." Customer: "What?" Tech Support: "Did you buy MS word?" Customer "No." -=+=- Customer: "Do I need a computer to use your software?" -=+=- Tech Support: "Ok, in the bottom left hand side of the screen, can you see the 'OK' button displayed?" Customer: "Wow. How can you see my screen from there?" Tech Support: "Years of training..." -=+=- Tech Support: "What type of computer do you have?" Customer: "A white one." -=+=- Customer: "I'm going to be using Windows NT. Should I get the Server or Workstation version?" Tech Support: "Well, are you using it as a workstation or as a server?" Customer: "A server. So, which one do I get?" Tech Support: "The server version perhaps?" Customer: "Which one is that?" Tech Support: "Windows NT Server." Customer: "Ok, thanks." -=+=- Tech Support: "Type 'A:' at the prompt." Customer: "How do you spell that?" -=+=- Customer: "I can't log in to my account." Tech Support: "Ok, let's look at your configuration." Customer: "Ok... but I know that my User ID is case sensitive." Tech Support: "Yes it is. Ok, what does it say in the 'User ID' field?" Customer: "'Case Sensitive'." -=+=- Tech Support: "What's on your screen right now?" Jeri, your question confused me for a while. It was not a critical question that Phyllis was asking. She just wanted to know what area of the county Theresa was asking about. Phyllis was just letting Theresa know what her(Phyllis's) Allens were located in the Brookfield, Mass, area if that was the area Theresa was talking about. I didn't read any tone in the message other than a request for further information. As for the make up of the list, there are some experienced genealogists here and a lot of newbies. We just try to help each other out with questions and requests. Sometimes people don't give enough information so that we know exactly what they want. So we will ask for further amplification so that we can see if we can help. Let's say that I put a message out to the list about George Washington Clevenger and asked for help with his lineage. That isn't very clear because There are George, George W. and George Washington Clevengers throughout a lot of different lines. I would have to specify George Washington Clevenger in the Tennessee and Missouri areas for it to have any effect on someone trying to help me. So I would probably get a request asking what area I was talking about. Hope to see a lot of questions and requests from you. We are all here to help in anyway we can. That goes for computer help to genealogy help, and a lot of things inbetween. LOL Del the Dragon Associate Emeritus IBBSG Proud Rootsweb Sponsor V.P. Hello to all List Members: [Hi Dr. Bill! I am so pleased that you are well again after your major attack! I can understand how shattered your nerves would get over that episode!] At the same time that our own Dr. Bill was having a terrible time with his virus invasion I received this URL from a friend. I checked the page, bookmarked it, and then 2 days ago decided to download the program. AVG 6.0 - FREE VIRUS PROTECTION http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.cfm I recommend that YOU check the page now, and bookmark it if you do not have time to deal with it at the moment. The current Virus protection that I had on my computer had given me some updates and was now due for an update which would cost me more money. As I live in Canada, and the update had to be converted to US Funds, this can get super costly for a senior on a pension. [The purchase of my current program was $70.00 CDN just a few months ago, and was now due for more money to go in the company kitty!] "This Protection was not difficult to down load" says the Dummy here! It did take me a bit of time, almost 30 minutes, but I was able to follow the instructions given. The beauty of this set up seems to be in the fact that an AUTOMATIC update will be added once per month, therefore give continued protection. You can also run a test for a Virus on all your external stuff such as Floppies, CDs etc. The window that pops up is clearly marked to let you do this. The program ran a complete test on my C:\\ Drive, which took about 50 minutes and then gave me a full report to record & compare against future tests. Please note that I have no affiliation with this company but am just passing the info along, for whatever it is worth, to those who want Virus Protection. Trusting that this will help some of you to avoid a very sick computer. Kind regards, June Conklin Ridsdale

Okey, dokey. Don't blame you, Bill jbl I will NOT open any attachments, Christmas Cards or > any thing else unless you have written me in advance and told me what to > expect. I have used 4 virus scans a total of 6 times and each reports me clean....if you see anything to the contrary, please let me know. Sorry for the trouble. NOTICE to each of you. I will NOT open any attachments, Christmas Cards or any thing else unless you have written me in advance and told me what to expect. It is too easy, in the crunch of answering 60-70 messages and performing the other functions to let one's guard down and open a virus laden attachment. Can't handle another of those. Bill, Use the online virus scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp Tell it to scan the entire computer and check mark the "auto clean" Several of us have tried to write to you personally and don't believe it is reaching you. Elaine

>From John Rathbone at jrathbon@dreamscape.com G'Day, Dr. Bill! I recently updated my annual subscription to Norton AntiVirus ("NAV") and downloaded all their updated files et al. Three days ago, when I went to check my e-mail, the NAV popped up on the screen (scared the b'jeepers out of me) and said that it had intercepted and quarantined this virus. I was asked to send it to their labs for examination and once that was done, I deleted it, per instructions. As that TV detective said, "Works for me!" Good luck -- and, Season's Greetings! -----Original Message----- From: bill@dr-fox.com <Bill@Dr-Fox.Com> To: NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com <NEWGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, December 15, 2000 9:28 PM Subject: [NEWGEN] Virus >Have used Inoculate, McAfee Virus Scan and Virus Shield and Dr. Solomon and >cannot find the virus.....Help me somebody! > >Dr. Bill >Bill@Dr-Fox.Com >HTTP://WWW.DR-FOX.COM {WEBSITE} > > >==== NEWGEN Mailing List ==== >WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU THANKED CYNDI FOR HER MARVELOUS LIST > >

Hi all; this is SO COOL I HAD to share... this is a link to a pic of all the lights of earth, all at the same time! It's a beautiful sight. Sent to me by a friend from another list who worked for NASA (but THATS a whole other story!) Thats 16 sunrises and sunsets in one day." http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg Birdie
