    2. Hi Everyone, My name is Lori Lial and here are my tree lines: Hawkins (maiden name) -- Lundy Hawkins is my brick wall for this line. He is my great grandfather. All I know of him is that he married my great grandmother Ida Ellen Ann Hoagland and they adopted my grandfather Glen Thomas Hawkins. Glen was born in Kansas in 1908. Hoagland Powers Holly -- Holley Lial -- My brick wall here is: Kenneth Daniel (Danny) Lial. All I know about him is that he was married to Goldie Geneva Childers, they had 2 children of which I am married to one of them. My mother in law says that he was born in Colorado and that he was adopted by the Lials. He was born an Gonzales. Anderson Childers Since I have started tracing my family online (about 1 year now) I have found 2 cousins. One distant cousin is Robert Anderson. He has sent me all of his info on his family that he had up to 1997. There was a book written about one of our ancestors, it is called "I Buried Hickok." Very interesting book, I am reading it now. It is about his life. The other cousin is more directly related. We share the same great great grandparents. It just so exciting when you find personal info on your ancestors. Not just that they were related to you and had brothers and sister and where they lived. My husband and daughter just look at me when I find something and get all excited.

    1. [NEWGEN] Being a Census Taker
    2. Sally Rolls Pavia
    3. "The Freeborn County Standard," 4 August 1870, page 1: THE YOUNG WIDOW A census-taker, going his round, stopped at an elegant brick dwelling house, the exact locality of which is no business of ours. He was received by a stiff, well-dressed lady, who could well be recognized as a widow of some years standing. On learning the mission of her visitor, the lady invited him to take a seat in the hall. Having arranged himself in a working position, he inquired for the number of persons in the family of the lady. "Eight, sir," replied the lady, including myself." "Very well--your age madam?" "My age, sir," replied the lady, with a piercing dignified look. "I conceive it's none of your business what my age might be; you are very inquisitive, sir." "The law compels me, madam, to take the age of every person in the ward; it s my duty to make the inquiry." "Well, if the law compels you to ask, I presume it compels me to answer. I am between thirty and forty." "I presume that means thirty-five." "No sir, it means no such thing--I am only thirty-three years of age." "Very well, madam," putting down the figures," just as you say. Now for the ages of your children, commencing with the youngest, if you please." "Josephine, my youngest, is ten years of age." "Josephine--pretty name--ten." "Minerva was twelve last week." "Minerva--captivating--twelve." "Cleopatra Elvira has turned fifteen." "Cleopatra Elvira--charming--fifteen." Angelina is eighteen, sir; just eighteen." "Angelina--favorite name--eighteen." "My oldest and only married daughter, sir, Anna Sophia, is a little over twenty-five." "Twenty-five did you say?" "Yes, sir. Is there anything remarkable in her being of that age." "Well, no, I can't say that there is; but is it not remarkable that you should be her mother when you were only eight years of age?" About that time the census-taker was observed running out of the house, why, we cannot say. It was the last time he pressed a lady to give her exact age. 1. [NEWGEN] Obituaries - You Can Make a Difference
    2. Illya D'Addezio
    3. How many obituaries are in your local paper? A dozen? Two dozen? I catalog my local paper each week in less than a minute. The Obituary Depot database is receiving over 5,000 new listings each month thanks to the many volunteers. Volunteers who do the simple task of grabbing their local paper and cataloging the names, ages and dates of those who passed away. We also have some volunteers who catalog obits from archived copies of local papers going back 20, 40 and some over 100 years ago. While this is sounding like a "sales" pitch, it's not. Our site is totally free and all I'm trying to do is encourage more people to pitch in and make a difference. Obituary Depot http://www.daddezio.com/obituary/index.html Donating a few minutes every week will help countless researchers around the world. Thanks, - illya d'addezio

    1. [NEWGEN] More on XP1
    2. Bunny
    3. The following information was taken from a newsletter .... Cannot Start Windows XP After Installing SP1 and Then Performing a System Recovery Operation What a mess! We've received hundreds of letters from people who could not even restart the computer after installing Windows XP SP1. If you're in this unhappy group and you have a HP Pavilion or a Compaq Presario, then you might be in luck. This article describes a method you can use to get back into your computer. It's not a perfect fix, but it's better than nothing. http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=021001CO-System_Recovery More Follow Up on Windows XP SP1 The cards and letters kept flowing in regarding Windows XP SP1. While the percentage of bad installs hasn't increased, they don't seem to be decreasing either. From what I can tell, there's still a one in five chance your computer world is going to be turned upside down by Windows XP SP1. If you plan to install this monster, I recommend you do so on a weekend when you don't have to go to work. Start early in the morning. Then when things explode, you have the rest of the day to reformat and reinstall. Speaking of reformatting and reinstalling, that's what I had to do. A couple of readers wrote in saying that I had no right to 'dis' Windows XP SP1 without putting it to the test on my own workstation. I took the acid test and installed it on my main box. This machine has three USB hard drives, a USB scanner, a Firewire drive, a USB CD burner, three internal hard disks, an internal CD ROM, three video cards and monitors, a USB joystick, a USB keyboard, a PS/2 mouse, and a bunch of software installed. Can you say "cratered"? After installing the service pack I did the restart. The machine hung on restarting. I tried again and again and again. I tried a number of techniques that usually work at getting a hung machine going again. Forgetaboutit. Reformat and reinstall. Now everything works, without the dreaded SP1. Go figure. SHARING works.... try it..... just once... you could reap the benefits ! ! ! ! !.

    3. Hi all, At Obituary Central http://www.obitcentral.com I'm always on the lookout for new research resources on the web. Yesterday I just discovered that Google has a new feature called Google News. Now this isn't the newsgroups as in the past. This is an index of over 4000 news publications on the web. After seeing the new feature I decided to try it out and typed in a surname only to find an obituary that I've been seeking for several days! The URL for the new feature is at http://news.google.com/ Hope this helps! 3. Good Afternoon to one and all: Sorry to miss you in St. Louis, Dr. Bill; maybe you didn't get my e-mail with our cell phone number? I promised to check in on my return, so here I am. Actually I've been home a week---but SBC/Yahoo bought out Prodigy and the transition (for me at least) has not been a smooth one. Hubby and I took a barge trip down the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Memphis, and it was a lovely vacation, lots of good company, Don says he doesn't know when he's been so relaxed. Now the explanation for that might be that, for once, he didn't try to combine some business into our trip! We made stops in Chester, IL, Cape Girardeau, MO, and Paducah, KY (rained/fogged out of Caruthersville, MO, but as I understand it, there's only a little casino there, so no great loss). On board we had live entertainment several evenings; also several educational movies about the river, etc., with discussions afterwards. Definitely something we'd do again (on another part of the river, of course) but, also added to my list of things to do, is to go back to both St. Louis and Memphis to do more sightseeing! I haven't had much to say online the last couple of years, been busy collecting information, and now the hard part comes in trying to verify and find proof. The Grindstaffs were tough, but a nice lady in New York has finally, by process of elimination, determined on which of those branches we can hang Don's hat! We were very fortunate last fall to be in Germany and were able to locate and visit the small villages in the Palatinate area from which his ancestors emigrated, more of a thrill for me, I think, than for him. Before that we had the good fortune to make trips to Egypt (to see those Pyramids was on my list of things to do someday!) and a trip to the Philippines where we had hoped to find some of his long-lost relatives...and almost did, but found the last person carrying the name designs golf courses and was somewhere in the mideast working when we were there. We've also managed to obtain a lot of data on one of Don's maternal lines, and again need to find proofs. Now and again something will come my way about my lines; what's livening up our lives there is finding out that most of my maternal great-great-grandmother's children seem to have been without an official father! She first shows up on census reports in different counties in VA over the years under the name Elizabeth Lewis, first with two children, no husband listed; next census, two more children; next census, two more children. Family lore says her hubby's name was David. Guess I'm going to have to go down to Patrick Co., VA, and do some digging! Cousins down that way haven't been able to find a marriage record, but we have good guess that her maiden name was Bryant. Some cousins aren't too happy to hear me speculate that our Grandfather Lewis probably wasn't a Lewis at all! Oh, well. And the most important thing I have to share is that, at long last, we're going to be grandparents! Just this morning our daughter called to say the ultrasound seems to show a boy (60% sure). She's in Germany with her husband (U.S.Army), so our little friend will be born end of March, maybe April. Our first grandchild, the 11th for her husband's family. Guess where we're going next year? It was rather interesting to learn that the Army doesn't have a gynecologist/obstetrician available there, so our daughter (and two other ladies in her apartment building) are being sent to an obstetrician off-base.
