    1. [NEWGEN] Reformat HD, & Net BEUI ?
    2. DR. BILL he he he! I did it!! trust me it IS impressive <VBG> For some reason I had to uninstall 4 PnP sound chips, install my sound card then RE install two of the PnP's I removed. Install uninstall ... I'm soo dizzy Dr. Bill ( or any other guru on the list!) I have been doing some 'playing' on my computer, and I found an amazingly informative and eye opening site that checks my IP connections and my computer for 'hacker type' vulnerabilities. I found out that while surfing the web I am in "stealth mode" <grin> I cannot be scanned by wanna be's, BUT I have a port that is on occasion WIDE open. It has something to do with my internet connection and it has recommended that I change my bios(?) something or other to Net BEUI as oppose to how it is set up now. Do you know anything about that?? ----- Original Message ----- From: bill@dr-fox.com <Bill@Dr-Fox.com> To: <birdie2@telusplanet.net> Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2000 5:11 PM Subject: Re: [NEWGEN] REFORMAT HD...GULP! We are so proud of you. Click Start, click settings, click control panel, click add and remove programs, remove your sound card, shut down Windows and start it up again, It should hunt for and recognize your sound card and add the appropriate drivers. Cross your fingers and go take a big dose of patience....it will work. Dr. Bill

    1. [NEWGEN] Genealogical Proof Standard
    2. Paul
    3. I'm wrestling with the concept of the "genealogical proof standard." The specific question that needs answering is: Is Sarah Jane Denman the daughter of Joseph Denman and Abigail Miller? I know that Sarah Jane Denman is my Great Great Grandmother because she is named in my Great Grandfather's death certificate. The Denman family is an old English line, a portion of which arrived in New England in the 1630s. Several books outlining the Denman lines were published over the years. In "The Denman Book," a Mrs. Harris states on Page 44 that "Joseph Denman and Abigail Miller has thirteen children. Others had smaller families." The book lists the children of William Denman and Phebe Woodruff, of whom Joseph was one. But Mrs. Harris goes no further. Efforts to contact their church in Newark NJ have not met with success. However, I am still trying. However, in the 1860 census, It shows a Joseph Denman living with John and Jane Clark and their son and daughter in law George and Louisa. I know this is the correct family. So, that is evidence that Jane Clark must be Sarah Jane Denman and logically, the fact that Joseph Denman is living with them is circumstantial evidence that she must be Joseph's daughter. But I consider this weak. I'd like to find more evidence, but none has been forthcoming. Have I gone far enough to reach a valid conclusion? Any comments and opinions from the genealogical experts here are, as usual, greatly appreciated. Cheers! Paul Veltman

I've only written one family history on my wife's mother's side because she's a nonagenarian and I want to get her family done while she's still with us. I became interested in Genealogy when I retired and started examining a few boxes of material that my mother left me in her pre-internet quest for her family origins. I have had good success with Rootsweb surname specific mail lists, so I thought I'd give this a shot. I purchased Family Tree Maker and filled it up with names that will make up several manuscripts. I'm not very happy with FTM. It seems rather cold and stilted. I think "mechanical" is a good term to use. My only other writing experience is writing academic papers. I decided on an outline format for my first manuscript. It's done in Word following the Chicago Manual of Style. I like to use footnotes, both citation and explanatory. Each person in my wife's direct line is a new chapter, so to speak. The children of this person are sub-headings within the chapter. It follows to grandchildren and great grandchildren of the key person. I have really no big desire to be a professional genealogist, but I want my work to be as professional as possible. This is for my kids and grandkids, as well as nieces and nephews. So much for the introduction. My question is regarding computer software. I've seen a few programs out there like FTM and Brother's Keeper, but I'm looking for something better. I want to write a story about the ancestors, not just a name and a date or two. I want the reader to feel as if they know the person. I picked up a couple of books recently, "Mastering Genealogical Proof" and "Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques." In the latter book, I came upon some software that may have some promise, "GenSmarts", "Clooz" and "Evidentia." While I probably will have to continue to rely on Word to write my manuscripts, I wonder if these programs can help automate the process a little. I'd really like to find something that will allow me to catalog documents and possibly connect them to a line at some point in time. Any opinions and comments are most welcome. 1. [NEWGEN] The Homestead Act -- INFORMATION FROM FOLD3 [National Archives]
    2. Sally Pavia
    3. The Homestead Act President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act on May 20, 1862. It was "an act to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain" and increased westward expansion through settlement of surveyed government lands in thirty states. The law allowed a homesteader to receive up to 160 acres by applying for a claim, improving the land and filing for a land patent after successfully living on the land for five years. Fold3 has been digitizing the homestead records for Nebraska. The files, from the Records of the Bureau of Land Management, consist of final certificates, applications with land descriptions, affidavits showing proof of citizenship, register and receiver receipts, notices and final proofs, and testimonies of witnesses. They sometimes contain unique records for a person or family, used to verify their right to make the claim. More details and some intriguing examples are on the Homestead Records description page. www.fold3.com/title_650/homestead_records_ne/?xid=1418 The 1862 Homestead Act had been debated, proposed and defeated for over ten years, stalled by the issue of slavery. After eleven states left the Union and a civil war erupted on American soil, the act finally passed. Applications were filed beginning on January 1, 1863. Daniel Freeman, a Union soldier, filed the first claim at the Brownsville, Nebraska land office on that day. In January 1868, he proved his claim. His file includes a statement by neighbors Joseph Graff and Samuel Kilpatrick that Daniel had lived on the land for five years with his wife and two children and "built a stable, a sheep shed 100 feet long, corn crib and has 40 apple and about 400 peach trees set out." He paid $12 for his 160-acre tract of land. Sally Rolls Pavia sallypavia2001@yahoo.com "We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds." 1. [NEWGEN] 1940 Census Records and Indexes Update
    2. Sally Pavia
    3. GenealogyInside by Diane Haddad & the Family Tree Magazine Staff Tuesday, May 01, 2012 http://blog.familytreemagazine.com/insider/ 1940 Census Records and Indexes Update Here's the latest on genealogy websites where you can find the 1940 census and which states you can search by an ancestor's name: Ancestry.com: Record images for all US states and territories are available free, as are searchable name indexes for Delaware, Nevada and Washington, DC A chart on the 1940 census page lets you see indexing progress. Archives.com: At this 1940 Census Community Project partner site, you can search name indexes to Colorado and Delaware. To access the unindexed portion of the census, this site sends you to the National Archives' 1940 census site (which Archives.com designed and hosts). FamilySearch: Digitized records are available here for all US states and territories. FamilySearch just announced that more than 85,000 1940 Census Community Project volunteers have already finished indexing 20 percent of the census, and thousands more volunteers sign up every week. Not all the indexed records are available to search online yet. FamilySearch s indexing progress map colors searchable states orange; so far, you can search name indexes for the states of Delaware and Colorado. To search, click the state on the map. (I clicked on Kansas and tried a search because Community Project partner FindMyPast.com has a Kansas index, but the results were people in Colorado.) FindMyPast.com: On this 1940 Census Community Project partner site, digitize records are available for most states. Records for Texas, California, Utah, Tennessee, Minnesota, Wisconsin and several others are missing. You can search name indexes for Delaware, Colorado and Kansas—except for Kansas, they're the same states as for FamilySearch, because it's the same index. MyHeritage: Records for all states and territories are available now for free. This site introduced the first searchable index, for the state of Rhode Island, but hasn't added any other states since. MyHeritage also has updated its mobile app so you can search 1940 census records from your iPhone, iPad or Android phone. The 1940 census record images also are available on FamilyLink.com, which MyHeritage purchased last year. You'll need to register for a free account on the site (if you don't already have an account there) to view the records National Archives: Records for all states and territories are available here for free. 1. [NEWGEN] Prayers/firefighters
    2. joni m
    3. List members, Some of you may have heard about the fire disaster here in Massachusetts. An empty warehouse fire claimed the lives of 6 firefighters last week. To date, only 1 body has been recovered. The City of Worcester is mourning. Seventeen children have been left fatherless. While I do not know any of the people involved, it is the top story on our local media and my heart goes out to all of the victims - the families, fellow firefighters, rescue workers, etc. Firefighters have been working 24/7 (except when they have been forced to leave because of unsafe conditions when winds were high enough to cause concern that the rest of the building might collapse) And parts of the building continue to smolder. They have vowed to be there continually until the remaining five bodies have been found. I cannot imagine the pain they are all feeling, and ask for your prayers to give them the strength they need to get through this nightmare, and pray they are able to find the bodies soon so the families can begin the healing process. Thank you. Joni

    3. I just received information from Costco Wholesale Club about internet provider MSN. They have an offer for members of $11.00 month, unlimited. Does anyone have experience with MSN as a provider. I switched from AOL to a local provider about a year and a half ago. Like dealing with a local organization, with real people who even answer the phone. But I could be tempted by this offer. Your thoughts would be appreciated. TIA Joni joan.markert@the-spa.com

    1. [NEWGEN] New Admin Note
    2. Jim "Pops" Jackson
    3. In order to properly introduce myself as new admin for this list, I thought it wise to give all a reminder of the purpose of this list. "Topic: This mailing list was created to assist those who are quite new to genealogy. The list offers how-to's for everything from selecting software for your record keeping to figuring out why your computer is misbehaving. For the really new genealogist, a Mentor will be assigned to help you, not only on the list but also in finding your way to the many excellent sources on the Internet. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at NEWGEN-admin@rootsweb.com." I realize this list has been in existence for quite some time and the list's purpose may have been forgotten. I would like to see us get the best use of this list we can. As for me, I am Jim "Pops" Jackson and have been active with Rootsweb/Ancestry for a number of years. I enjoy my duties as a list admin and like to think I actually am sometimes helpful to my lists' members. Your response to this message is invited and hoped for. If we can become the Mentors or, for those of you needing help, find Mentors who will be willing to help, then I will feel we have realized our purpose on this list. Best wishes, Jim "Pops" Jackson
