However, Robert was born in New Jersey, and married the daughter (Mary) of Captain John Cougle in New York in 1783. He appears on the Kings County Assessment Roll of 1790,633 and in 1794, he received a grant of 200 acres along Trout Creek about four miles from Sussex Corner.634 At Sussex Vale, Robert became a successful merchant and mill owner, and was onetime appointed Overseer of the Poor.
