    3. Sue, Figuring some info was amiss in last response, I went on a "dig". Here is what I've found (STILL not entirely sure the William Brunswick Howard bunch IS the "W.B. Howard" mentioned in William's obit in 1888, but listed the "hits" just in case. Here are my notes... ----------------- Hi, My 3xgreat grandfather was William Howard. He lived in Saint John where he built ships such as "Effingham", "Howard", "Anna", and "Whim". He lived at 40 Wentworth Street, and died in 1888 leaving his widow Elizabeth, and 5 of his 13 children. He was a member of Carleton Royal Arch Chapter. Is anyone else researching this family, or can anyone tell me where to look for more information? Sue (in the UK) ---------------- 1881 Canada Census for Prince Ward, St. John, NB: Wm. HOWARD M Male Irish 77 Ireland Church of England Robert HOWARD Male Irish 40 Ireland Church of England Elizabet HOWARD M Female Irish 73 Ireland Church of England Annah HOWARD Female Irish 52 Ireland Church of England Margeret A. HOWARD Female Irish 34 Ireland Church of England He would have been @ 84 years of age in 1888, when he passed. This fits with "four score" from obit, below: I figured the previously mentioned one would have to be in error, if we KNOW he died in 1888. 1888 Obit for William from PANB Newspaper Vital Statistics (thanks to Dan Johnson!) - Published 22-Feb-1888, Saint John "The Daily Telegraph" William HOWARD, who for about 60 years was a resident of St. John, has passed over to the silent majority, having died yesterday after attaining the age of four score. He was born in Belfast, Ireland and in 1827 landed in St. John with his parents. For many years he was in the dry goods trade on the North wharf and afterwards on Market Square and Chipman's Hill. He carried on shipbuilding a number of years and built the ships "Effingham", "Howard", "Anna" and "Whim". The "Anna" was the first ship ever built on Courtenay Bay at the Marsh Bridge. In 1841 Mr. Howard moved to the United States where he remained a few years, returning after a short stay in St. John. His second stop in the States did not last long and he came back to the land of his adoption to spend the sunset of his life. His commission as Lt. in the 1st Battalion of Militia, City of Saint John is dates 1838 and signed by Major General Sir John Harvey, then Governor of New Brunswick. Mr. Howard afterwards held a commission as captain in the St. John Light Infantry granted him in 1865 which is signed by Gov. Gordon. It seems strange that as the Mechanic's Institute is losing its existence that one of its original members should pass away. He had at the time of his death a certificate signed by Beverley Robinson, as president. A second certificate dated Dec. 1861 bears the name of Joseph W. Lawrence as president. Mr. Howard's papers, as freeman of the city of Saint John are signed by Wm H. Street, mayor and were granted in 1835. Deceased was connected with the Masonic fraternity, having joined the Albion lodge in 1843. It was then under the Grand Lodge of England and was known as No. 570. He became a companion of Carleton Royal Arch chapter in 1845. Mr. Howard is survived by a widow and five (out of thirteen) children. Three of the number with Mrs. Howard live in the city; W.B. HOWARD lives at Miramichi and the other, Capt. Thomas DeW. HOWARD is captain of a steamer plying between Liverpool and Brazil. So, we know W. B. Howard is a son, from Miramichi in 1888, and Thomas DeWaldon Howard, MAY show up on UK census records? MAY have had a daughter, Margaret, who died at 14m of age in late 1834. (same source) Similarly, MAY have been father of William Brunswick Howard, who d. Jun-1842, St John, aged 3 years 3m. PANB index to St John Burial Permits: Name HOWARD, ELIZABETH Age 80 Date 1889-12-31 Birth Place IRELAND County -- Volume 2 Number 272 Microfilm F20740 This fits with Elizabeth being born 1808-ish, Ireland. Given the information in the obit, it is possible William Howard is the named William in an 1852 land petition under the name of William Henry Wilks, county of Saint John. No idea on the W.B. but do wonder if that was the beginning of the name William Brunswick Howard? If so, a descendant no doubt...
