    3. Hi Jared and Listers, The new "mailman" software handles things differently than the old "smartlist" software used by Rootsweb to handle all their mailing lists. On New Brunswick, I have it is set to Reply to This List". Here's the explanation from the new software. Reply to List or Reply to Poster . . . . This option controls what happens when a user clicks “reply” to a mailing list email. Selecting “Poster” will direct any replies to list messages directly to email address of poster. Selecting “This list” will direct all replies to the mailing list email address. For instance, when you sent this message, your email program settings are such that when I clicked reply, it gets addressed to YOU and the LIST. It's not the Mailman software, it's your email program. This can go awry however. Let's say you send a message to 8 different mailing lists (the maximum allowed by Mailman, that you are a member of). If I, as a member of one list, click reply (depending on the settings of my email software) it will go to ALL 8 lists that your original message went to. If I'm NOT a member of the other 7 mailing lists, then 7 other List Admins are going to have to deal with a "bounced" or held message from a me... non-list member. This is one of the new annoying glitches in the Mailman software, unfortunately. Mailing list etiquette has always held that you should NOT include the original poster in your reply to the list. Private copies of postings to mailing lists will result in multiple copies arriving in the recipient's mailbox, rather than just one. A good rule of thumb is to remember to check the To: line and the SUBEJCT line (for digest subscribers) before hitting the SEND button. Some email programs allow you to go into your Account Settings/ Toolbar, or preferences and set how you want your replies to be handled. I use Thunderbird which allowed me to do this. I know that Eudora, Pegasus and Pine also have this option. I have removed the REPLY TO ALL button from my toolbar, so that I can choose what goes in the TO and CC boxes. Outlook and Outlook Express do not have this option and I can't remember what Netscape has for options. Hope this answers your question, Marilyn Jared Handspicker wrote: > Since we're covering the "bounce" issue, was wondering if you could > clarify another question...
