    3. You probably have your "headers" on compact mode. It only shows up when you see the complete headers - which can be as long as 20-25 lines. There has to be something different on the end of the users receiving it because for most of us it is not on ANY of the messages. I am terrible about not emptying my email trash, but in this case that is good, because I just went through over 3000 Rootsweb list emails from over 100 Rootsweb lists, including over 120 messages from this list. It is not on any of them at all. The only place I have ever seen it is in the message from Rose asking what it was. In fact it was not even in the header of her email. Only in the message she copied into her email. So the explanation that it is the new software fits, but it must mean something about the particular list member receiving it because it is not on any of the messages by default, only on message received by particular list members. This is my *guess*, and this is only a guess but it is based on seeing this system used on other types of mailing lists in the past. It is part of Rootsweb's new system to eliminate bad email addresses. If you have an email sent to you by Rootsweb bounce for any reason it puts you into a special group where your list messages are, for a predetermined amount of time, sent with the word bounce in the list address. If they have a list message bouce that has the word bounce in the list address, maybe once, maybe a set number of times, then they mark it as a bad address and delete it from the list. 3. I see what you are seeing in the extended header. This, or something similar, is in the extended header for most lists, not just Rootsweb. That is *not* the list email address, the address to send emails to, or the address they are coming from. And that is *not* where the original person questioning it showed they were seeing it. That is in the extended header. The actual list address is in the Reply-To: and the To: lines in the normal header where the same message says, -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [ NB ] Bounce issues Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2007 08:43:25 -0500 From: Tim Kemp <tkemp@mindspring.com> Reply-To: newbrunswick@rootsweb.com To: newbrunswick@rootsweb.com What you are looking at in the extended header is the Return-Path address, not the list address. This is the address that email servers are instructed to send all bounced email back to. This is how they know what has bounced. Yes, that is in all messages, but the list member who was questioning it had a copy/paste showing it was in the *From::* lines in the emails she was getting. That is where I was saying it is not normal. If the system sees one bounce back with "bounce" already in the To; or Reply-To: lines then it knows it has had multiple bounces from that address. It is not in the normal header in any of the emails I receive from any of my over 100 Rootsweb lists and should not be in the normal header of anyones unless they have had a previous bounce. It is only in the Return-Path address of everyone's extended header or possibly in the To: or Reply-To: lines IF they have had a previous message to them from Rootsweb bounce back to the bounce address. A bounce does not mean you have a bad address by any means. Just a simple glitch in your ISP's server or any internet relay between you and Rootsweb, a stall on an internet connection causing a timeout, and a multitude of other temporary problems can cause a bounce when you have no actual problem with your email at all. Most email servers will retry every 4 hours for a period of 4 days before giving up and returning the email to the sender as unsendable. Due to their HUGE volume of email sent, Rootsweb tries only once, then marks it as a bounced email. This was causing many users to be deleted from Rootsweb when there was no problem with their email address and many users were getting irritated. I have heard that their new software has a way around this and I would guess that it marks bounced email addresses and waits to see if they continue bouncing. This could be the reason for the word bounce in others email addresses. Maybe you have one email bounce on first try, so they marked you for a predetermined amount of time to see if it continues. Again, this is only my guess. BTW, if you are only getting 20-25 lines then you are still not getting all of the information details available in a complete extended header. Looking at the header for the message you are replying to I see 47 lines, not counting 9 more lines from word-wrap. Tim Cleadie B wrote: >You probably have your "headers" on compact mode.
