Great pictures of the falls.....the first seems to be as I remember in the 1950's. The other two may have been after the beginning of the building of the Mactaquac Dam, when truck loads of rocks were dumped into the gorge. I have a photo that belonged to my grandmother that was taken when the dam at the top of the falls was still in place, and another dated 1928 where it appears that the dam is no longer in place. I do not know when the dam went, or what happened to it. These two photos were taken within a short time of each other, as there are three fallen trees that appear in both photos. However, one would have been taken in the spring when the water was high, and is coming straight over the dam into the gorge. In the second one, the water is coming into the gorge from the left which is where I remember it from 1945 on. One of the earliest views of the Pokiok is by George Heriot from the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum: "View on the River St. John near the Poquioq", 23 July 1807, brown wash by George Heriot, Royal Ontario Museum/953.132.2. http://www.familyheritage.ca/Images/NBGallery/Fall%20of%20the%20Pokiok%20St. %20John%20River%20by%20George%20Heriot.jpg Cheers, Rob _______________________________ www.familyheritage.ca -----Original Message----- From: newbrunswick-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:newbrunswick-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of ROBERT SHARPE Sent: January 21, 2007 12:54 PM To: jedh@jedh.com; newbrunswick@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ NB ] Dorlandt and Pokiok Great pictures of the falls.....the first seems to be as I remember in the 1950's. Here is the right credit for the Heriot's view of the falls picture: Fall of the Poquioq River, St. John River", ca. 1807, brown wash over pencil by George Heriot, Royal Ontario Museum/953.132.29.
