I've heard this too and that it was a myth to help "prove" that the Irish King, Madoc/Medoc, was in America 600-700 years in the 7th (8th?) century, well before Christopher Columbus landed. The myth also said Madoc reached Mexico (cross border shopping?). After 700-800 years, would genetics have kicked in to erase blue eyes with the more dominant brown eye gene? This will probably open another can of worms, but is interesting.
