    3. I am trying to find the parents of Helene Mercier who married Ernest Everet LeGouffe/LeCouffe 15 Jun 1908 at Dundee, NB I found them on the 1911 census for Dalhousie, Restigouche and she was listed as 24 born Apr 1887. She died 19 Jan 1979 in Timmins, Ont. and I believe that she is buried at Our Lady of Snows, Campelton, NB. Her husband Ernest LeGouffe s/o Jean LeGouffe and Emma Leblanc, was buried there 15 Dec 1935. I did find a Helene Mercier, born 4 Apr 1889, on the 1901 census, living with her grandparents, Joseph Mercier and Hermine (Loubert) at Nouvelle, QC. I am wondering if this could be the same person. Any leads would be appreciated. Elenore Kamloops, B.C.

    3. Hi Physically, it is possible as Nouvelle is just across the bay from Dalhousie - perhaps less than one mile. 3. Elenore, Many interesting possibilities, if in fact, Joseph and Hermine prove to be your Helene's grandparents. Playing with various records, I started by presuming you were correct in your assumptions. That said, based on the 1891 Census record for the same family, I SUSPECT your Helene is the one listed as Ellen LEBLANC in 1891. This is, of course, a "guess", but should be considered feasible. That said, the only record found on a like named individual, born around 1887, offers some interesting possibilities, while also making it near impossible (at least for me and my limited understanding of French records) for me to offer up any sort of absolute or definitive answer to your quest for the names of her parents. It's an intriguing little puzzle, though, to be sure... Here are my notes: 1901 Canada Census for Nouvelle & Shoolbred, Bonaventure, QUEBEC 4 20 31 Mercier Joseph M Head M May 12 1827 73 4 21 31 Mercier Hermine F Wife M Jun 20 1840 60 4 22 31 Mercier Honoré M Son S Mar 20 1857 43 4 23 31 Mercier Joseph M Son S Feb 15 1866 35 4 24 31 Mercier Alex M Son S Apr 12 1871 29 4 25 31 Mercier Hélène F petite fille S Apr 4 1889 11 4 26 31 Mercier Marie F Petite fille S Mar 1 1889 12 Would have to say, one of the two grandaughters is either incorrect, or were born to two different sons. Above family in 1881, at St Jean L'Evangeliste, Bonaventure, Quebec: Joseph MERCIER M Male French 55 Q <Quebec> Journalier Catholique Hermine MERCIER M Female French 48 Q <Quebec> Catholique Marie MERCIER Female French 28 Q <Quebec> Catholique Jane MERCIER Female French 25 Q <Quebec> Catholique Honore MERCIER Male French 22 Q <Quebec> Journalier Catholique Elisee MERCIER Male French 20 Q <Quebec> Journalier Catholique Joseph MERCIER Male French 18 Q <Quebec> Journalier Catholique Julienne MERCIER Female French 15 Q <Quebec> Catholique Alexandre MERCIER Male French 12 Q <Quebec> Catholique Hermine MERCIER Female French 8 Q <Quebec> Catholique This might indicate that the father of Helene (if correctly presumed to be g.dau of Joseph and Hermine is one who married Ernest, would then be d/o Honore, Elisee, or Joseph. Unless her father was already married by 1881. Honore was christened 16-Jul-1858, Carleton, Bonaventure, Quebec, his parents listed as Joseph mercier and Marie Hermine Loubert. Joseph and Marie Hermine were married 24-Feb-1851, Quebec, probably at Carleton. This is an incorrect fit, though, given the one shown to have married Joseph in 1851 is said to have been born 07-Sep-1830 and d. 14-May-1913, d/o Louis B. Loubert and Marie Helene LeBlanc. And, what makes it even worse, regarding ANY sort of accuracy in Census dates, is the following: ID: I94900 Name: Joseph Mercier Sex: M Birth: 16 DEC 1817 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec 1 Baptism: 16 DEC 1817 Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec 1 Death: 23 JAN 1906 in Nouvelle (Bonaventure) Québec 1 Burial: 25 JAN 1906 Nouvelle (Bonaventure) Québec 1 Occupation: Cultivateur Father: Augustin Mercier b: 12 DEC 1792 in Maria (Bonaventure) Québec Mother: Olivette Boudreau b: 17 AUG 1796 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Marriage 1 Hermine Loubert b: 7 SEP 1830 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Married: 24 FEB 1851 in Maria (Bonaventure) Québec 1 Children Hélène Mercier b: 1 DEC 1851 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Élisée Mercier b: 8 MAR 1854 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Jeanne Mercier b: 13 OCT 1855 in Maria (Bonaventure) Québec Honoré Mercier b: 16 APR 1858 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Élisée Mercier b: 3 MAY 1860 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Marie-Anne Mercier b: 1862 Élisée Mercier b: 12 FEB 1863 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Julienne Mercier b: 10 SEP 1865 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Alexandre Mercier b: 9 JUL 1868 in Carleton (Bonaventure) Québec Hermine Mercier b: 1 DEC 1872 in Nouvelle (Bonaventure) Québec Hmmmm... in this database, the only son without a marriage listed, and there is no LISTED son with a daughter Helene, would be Elisee Mercier, b. 08-Mar-1854, Carleton, bapt. 09-Mar-1854, also at Carleton... There's an Elisee Mercier who m. Marie Landry, they had a daughter, Adelina, who was married in 1924, in St. Zenon, de Lac Humqui, P.Q. However, that Elisee who married Marie Landry married her on 09-Jan-1893, perhaps in Charlotte Co, NB. Hmmm... well, the Elisee who married Marie Landry, wsa a bit older than she. Here is that couple in 1901 census, at Dalhousie, Restigouche, NB!!! 13 31 125 Mercier Elias M Head M May 24 1862 39 13 32 125 Mercier Mary F Wife M Nov 5 1870 31 13 33 125 Mercier Arthur M Son S Dec 17 1895 6 13 34 125 Mercier Edmound M Son S May 13 1897 4 13 35 125 Mercier Eva F Daughter S Aug 21 1898 3 13 36 125 Mercier Delina F Daughter S May 2 1899 1 A GUESS would be, he COULD have married previous to Marie, and had Helene and Marie. Then, when he married Marie, the girls went to live with their grandparents??? This would fit with another fact... in 1911, Delina is adopted by Andre and Melvina LeBlanc, and living in Nouvelle, P.Q. INTERESTING... 1891 Canada Census for Nouvelle, Bonaventure, P.Q.: Joseph Mercier 50 Armine Mercier 45 Henry Mercier 31 Elisy Mercier 25 (widowed) Joseph Mercier 24 (Honore??? or is this a son overlooked in the online database?) Alexander Mercier 23 Armine Mercier 15 Juliana Mercier 22 Margrette Mercier 2 (grand daughter) Ellen Leblanc 4 (grand daughter hmmmm.... but could have been born LeBlanc and raised as Helene Mercier????) COULD Margrette be Margrette Helene, or Helen Margrette??? Not so lucky... Elisee married Marie LaViolette 10-Apr-1888 (bans/publication), at Nouvelle. He was son of Joseph Mercier and Hermine Loubert. Marie was d/o Abraham Laviolette and Marguerite Dugas. Their daughter, Marie Marguerite Mercier, baptized 01-Mar-1889, Nouvelle. My GUESS would be, this is the 2nd grand daughter listed for Joseph and Hermine in the 1901 Census record. Hmmm... a Marie Helene (LeBlanc) 10-Apr-1887, Nouvelle, ??? 20-Sep.. bapt. Marie Helene nee Le?Cling?, parents "incommue", Francois ? LeBlanc, Marriane Hermine Laubert?? Would appear this Marie Helene LeBlanc's parents were not married when she was born, but nothing indicating a relationship to any MERCIER family member. The "Hermine Laubert" part is a bit interesting, though... IF this were the same individual, one might presume she was actually a daughter of Hermine, by a "lover", not Joseph... BIT of a stretch, and could just be a very odd coincidence on the April 1887 date... This is the closest match I COULD find, though surely it's not definitive, it does raise some questions. The information on births and marriages mostly from Quebec Vital and Church records (Drouin Collection, 1621-1967). So, whose child was Helene? Does NOT appear she would have been a daughter of Elisee and even his first wife, Marie Laviolette, as they married after she was born. If she's a GRAND daughter of Joseph and Hermine, by which son? By Joseph/Honore? Surely not Honore, as he wasn't married until 16-Jul-1898, to Marie-Anne Philippe. Elisee later married (if it's even the same one), apparently, to Marie Perron, on 22-Jun-1910. This is perhaps in error, as it is a 2nd Elisee shown b. to Joseph and Hermine. Now, could Honore have been married previous to his 1898 marriage? Could Helene have been illegitimate daughter of a daughter of Joseph and Hermine's? > At 03:11 2009-07-13, you wrote: >>I am trying to find the parents of Helene Mercier who married Ernest >>Everet LeGouffe/LeCouffe 15 Jun 1908 at Dundee, NB I found them on >>the 1911 census for Dalhousie, Restigouche and she was listed as 24 >>born Apr 1887.
