John.... I have some of these documents and I really don't understand all of the details so your explanation really helps. I'm wondering why he didn't petition for land earlier say in 1783 or 84 or 85 - why not until 1803. I'm sure he wasn't the only one but so many petitioned and were granted land a lot earlier - 20 years earlier. Could it be that records were lost which given the circumstances would seem plausible. As always... I appreciate your help. John... one thing, the registers that you sourced, are they the ones that were at the Kings co. court house? or do you have an index? Shirley On Thu, Sep 3, 2009 at 6:54 PM, S. Hi again, Shirley, The registers were at the Court House until the new Service New Brunswick building was built in Hampton a few years ago when they were moved there. Within the last couple of years all the old registers were taken to Fredericton and digitized. Although I have not used them since, I understand that the digital images can be accessed online - for a fee. I believe the access would be through the Service New Brunswick system. The provincial archives in Fredericton also holds microfilms of all these old registers, including the indices. I don't believe the actual originals are accessible any longer. The items I cited were taken from my own personal transcripts (which I had done several years ago from the microfilm). Consequently they are subject to double checking. I realized that I forgot to look for the Guiggey/Guiggie/Guiggy spellings. When I went back I found another document which may help to explain a bit about what he was up to. In Register G-1, pp205-8 on 8 Nov. 1800, is a mortgage from John Guiggy of Westfield, yeoman, and Mary his wife to Munson Jarvis & William Whitlock, merchants of Saint John (who held a lot of mortgages!) for the following property: 2 lots on west side of Grand Bay in Par. of Westfield, lots #10 & 15 - #10 having been purchased by Colonel David Fanning of Jacob Dill & Thomas Hale the original grantees & #15 by said David Fanning of the original grantees, John P. Lynch & Daniel Watters & by said David Fanning conveyed to said John Guiggy - ea. lot 200 acres m/l - also the claim of John Guiggy & Mary his wife have by virtue of a quit claim from said David Fanning to a tract of ungranted land in Par. of Westfield #12 in 2nd range of what is called Campbells Survey on W side of Grand Bay of 200 acres m/l in rear of #10 in Bedells Survey I also discovered that the purchase from David Fanning dated the same day (8 Nov. 1800) was registered just before the mortgage (pp 203-4) under the apparent spelling "Quiggy" (no wonder I didn't find it originally!!) So . . . this pushes him back to at least 1800 in Westfield. Apparently John had financial problems, for in Register L-1, pp 176-184, I found that Munson Jarvis & William Whitlock recovered debts against him in court in 1813 and consequently the above named lots #10 & 15 were seized by the Sheriff and sold by auction on 20 Jan. 1814. Hope this helps a bit. John ----- Original Message ----- From: "S.
