    1. [ NB ] Pennfield Parish website updated
    2. G. Christian Larsen
    3. Greetings, This update is dedicated to Phoebe Elizabeth Toy (December 19, 1910-October 25, 2009). Dibby, as she was commonly known, was a local newspaper correspondent and well known historian. I vividly recall the old Toy homestead on Riverview Avenue from my visits in the 1970's and 80's with my Aunt who lived further up the Avenue. Dibby was the one you always went to for answers when searching property titles in the St. George area. Her wealth of knowledge of this area, particularly St. George, will never be replaced. The Pennfield Parish website has been updated once again. Here is a listing of what is new: What's new, November 6, 2009 Church & Cemetery Record Christ Church (Anglican) Cemetery - added obit. for Emma McKay. Military History No.34 Operational Training Unit (Remembering Those Who Served) - added five (5) names for those stationed at the base. RCAF Station, Pennfield Ridge (Remembering Those Who Served) - added one (1) name for those stationed at the base. People TOY, P. Elizabeth - "Women cleared health hurdle" added. Vital Statistics Pennfield Parish Strays (Who Are Buried Elsewhere) - added obit. for Lawrence D. Matthews. To find additional information and/or links please see "What's New" section on the main page. Recently visited the crash site of Ventura AE872 at Hills Mountain that claimed the lives of three (3) airmen from No.34 Operational Training Unit, Pennfield Ridge on 23 January 1943. As someone recently remarked to me: "I believe over the years, there has been a number of people who claimed to have 'found' it, but some of the old timers from the Hills Point area years ago could have taken people up that mountain to the site any time they wanted. It funny how easy we forget? It only takes one generation to lose interest." Attempts are also now being made to locate the crash site of Ventura AJ211 that crashed near Richibucto, NB 8 February 1943. This crash claimed the lives of three (3) airmen from No.34 Operational Training Unit Detachment, Yarmouth, NS (these airmen were scheduled to return to Pennfield Ridge in two (2) days time). The search is being made based on two eye-witness accountings of the crash and it is hopefully the site can be located while the witnesses are still living. A memorial stone and/or plaque recognizing the crash site is also in the works. In regards to the Richibucto crash, it's strange how one can contact another researcher who, as they say, ".is dedicated primarily to the casualties of Pennfield Ridge and their families" and receive no reply to your inquiries about contacting family members of those killed in this crash. Guess when they said "Do you think there may be a doubling of efforts in terms of the Pennfield air station" what they really meant is that they are the only one entitled to do said research. Any ways Pennfield Parish Military Historical Society will be celebrating its second anniversary on November 28th. In this short period of time we have acquired a large and vast amount of material on the former Pennfield Ridge Air Station and A-30 Canadian Infantry Training Centre (Camp Utopia). Our "Roll of Honour" now lists 69 airmen, 1 Royal Navy seaman (passenger aboard a Ventura aircraft when it crashed) and 6 civilians killed at the former Air Station and 6 military personnel killed at Camp Utopia. We took over hosting duties of the annual memorial service to remember those killed at these former two Charlotte County military bases in February of this year. Since that time we have located 23 family members of those killed and had the honour of having 6 attend this year's memorial service. There are nine (9) crash sites within New Brunswick involving Pennfield Ridge aircraft and, of those, only the one (1) in McAdam has been recognized with a proper memorial stone. McAdam Mayor Frank Carroll recently remarked to me "My sisters and I certainly enjoyed the War Memorial Service held on September 27th. Your organization is certainly to be commended for the time and energy they have put into, not only this event, but in the impressive display of military history and events that unfolded at Pennfield Ridge, N.B. during war time." Hopefully we can, in due course, have the other crash sites marked and recognized as well and then perhaps the next generation will not lose interest. Regards, G.
