First of all , I 'd like to thank everyone who has responded in the past to my queries about the Stevens / Stephens family. I have made some progress , but am stuck with John Stevens/Stephens. The 1851 census for Wakefield , Cartleton Cty. says that John Stevens was born abt. 1791 in New Hampshire , and entered the colony (NB) in May of 1812. This seems to be a curious time for him to enter NB., as the war of 1812 officially started in June of 1812. On my database I have him listed as Capt. John Stevens, but of course, I did not reference this and do not know if this is accurate. Is it possible that he could have gone to New Brunswick as part of the New Brunswick Fencibles? I believe that he first went to Fredericton where he married Mary Elizabeth Ackerman in 1816, and later moved to Carleton County .I have his death date,(1859) and all of his children , and listing of Land Grants , but I am curious of his reasons for going to NB, as a possible way of finding his parents. Thanks for any help. Janet
Hi Janet, I wish I had the military information that you're seeking but I don't - hopefully, someone else on the list will. You said that you have a listing of his land grants - what about land petitions? The petitions can give genealogical background information which the grants do not contain such as marriage status, age, place of birth, military affiliation, etc. Plus, the men didn't usually petition just for land in the county they settled in but sometimes all over the place - don't ask me why. The c1812 time period shows a grant for a John STEVENS 1813 Northumberland (under the name John REIR - petition with 6 other men). Then there's a jump to the 1850s before the name John STEVENS/STEPHENS appears again. The record below is probably his death as you had given 1859. There are other writeups in the Vital Stats from NB newspapers which could be his children - you didn't give their names - but most of them, as well, were living in Fredericton with one saying that the daughter was of Carleton Co. & the father, John STEVENS, Fredericton. You would know for sure but I did notice on the 1851 Carleton Census that he had a daughter "Mirion". You may have seen these records - but just in case: John's wife, Mary Elizabeth ACKERMAN" has been researched and perhaps you may find your answer regarding her husband in her family history.
