Edinburgh University special collections says there is no record of a C. Bayard having studied medicine there, and wonders if the "C" could have been a mistranscribed "E" for Edwin, since Edwin Bayard graduated from Edinburgh in 1846, but another check of Johnson shows Edwin Bayard died in 1875, and the letter in question was written 1880...I checked Johnson for Charles Bayard too...he died of insanity and exposure in 1871. Like any good newspaperman, I will have to find another source to verify the "C," before I go with my first instinct!
