    3. Is there anyone I can contact that has information concerning people who acted as prison guards at Dorchester Penitentiary? The surname of the family I'm interested is McDougall. These McDougalls are Nova Scotian in origin. Although I don't know when they began their work there, I know that their Nova Scotian relatives were visiting them in Dorchester as late as 1958 and that they were prison guards who supervised a Halifax jail before they went to Dorchester. One of the persons I am looking for was named "John" whose wife was called "Jane" on their marriage license. Two of their children were called James and Sarah(Sara, Sadie). I'm hoping that there is someone out there who has an interest in the history of the Penitentiary and has been collecting information about the people involved. That being said, I welcome any leads. Thanks, Carolee Nichols

    3. You might want to try the Sessional Papers of Parliament after 1876 (I think that's when Dorchester opened) especially the reports of the auditor general, who issued occasional lengthy and detailed personnel lists for various federal departments like the post office and Intercolonial Railway. The Sessional Papers lasted until 1925-26 and "hard" copies may be available through your local university library (I use the Killam Library at Dalhousie.)
