I believe it meant "native-born" (i.e. born in Canada) but I can't put my hands on the proper authority to substantiate that at the moment. -----Original Message----- From: newbrunswick-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:newbrunswick-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jim Roaix Sent: April-18-11 12:39 PM To: newbrunswick@rootsweb.com Subject: [ NB ] 1861 census clarification? I agree Bonny, as I have gone through the census records, the word native has invariably meant "born in NB". Looking at other names on the page or pages you can see the difference. .... anyway families living in Saint John with a lot of Patrick, Jeremiah, Timothy etc and last Irish names born "native" would be hard to construe as indigenous.
