John Vail Fleet was born 31 August 1885 in St. John, son of Charles Fleet and Mary Alice (Jenkins) Fleet. I have search through the NBPA vital records site and can find no information on him. Could he have been still born or died in infancy. Any information would help. Thank you, Walter Fleet in Pennsylvania
Hi Walter, The NB ARchives - Brunswick Newspaper Statistics - shows a Charles Fleet who died 02 Aug 1888 Victoria Mills-Fredericton. Ancestry shows the Widow Mary A. Fleet with a son John aged 8 on the 1891 Fredericton, York Co. census; John aged 18, Tanner, on 1901 Fredericton (written as FLETT on 1901 census) with his widowed mother. There was another John Fleet aged 9 on the 1891 Saint John census but his parents were William & Mary Fleet. The 1911 Fredericton census has the various older children married - but John is not one of them nor is he living with any of his siblings nor are his younger siblings found. I did see John's brother Leonard's late birth registration applied for when an adult but nothing for John. If John died aft the 1901, this whole time period of late 1800s & early 1900s is a gray area where records are concerned. Shirley On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 7:41 PM, Walter R. Hi: I have been watching with interest the early marriages in NB. I have searched for some time for the marriage of Robert Miller and Elizabeth James, widow of Hypolite LeGouffe with no success. They would have been married about 1834 or 1835. The children were all baptized in the Catholic church in New Richmond, Bonaventure but I know that Elizabeth was living in New Brunswick prior to the death of her first husband. Robert and Elizabeth Miller are buried in the United Church graveyard at New Mills, NB as were some of their children. Any help would be most appreciated. Elenore Kamloops, B.C.
Hi Shirley, Thank you kindly for your various clues and tips. It was a great surprise to me when I first discovered the report in Dan Johnson's collection about my gg-grandmother dying in Truro. I believe she must have been visiting her daughter Annie and husband Robert H Edwards, since it fits with various things that this couple (who are my g-grandparents) would have been in Truro at the time -- this was before they moved on to Halifax. Robert Henry Edwards was from Fredericton; his father John A. Edwards (1808-1896) was city treasurer in Fredericton for a time (around 1881 I think). I do not know of any Armour relations of my gg-grandmother Jane. I did at one time save all the ANDREWS related posts in the Johnson collection, but I have not searched extensively for the ARMOUR name. I will follow your advice and do some investigating in that direction. I should also ask at the Saint John library about possible obits for Joseph / Jane Andrews, in 1885. BTW, I did join the SJ branch of the NB Genealogical Society a couple of years ago, and am still a member. Thanks again, John Cordes On [2011-03-25 at 08:30pm] S. Hi John, Thanks very much for your efforts -- I appreciate your interest and help. The situation is confused somewhat by the existence of at least one other ANDREWS family in Saint John during the period of interest to me, namely approximately 1840 - 1900 or so. And I recall from my searches in city directories that there was at least one 'other' (not my family) Joseph Andrews, although there were two Joseph ANDREWS men in my family -- father and son. I have indeed made very good use of Dan Johnson's fantastic work. For example: Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 62 Number 3231 Date April 14 1885 Place Saint John Newspaper The Daily Telegraph d. City of Portland (St. John) Sunday 12th inst., Joseph ANDREWS, 85th year. Funeral from his residence Paradise Row, Wednesday half past 2 o'clock. The Joseph in this death notice above was my gg-grandfather. He had a son Joseph (1844-1917) who was a physician practicing in Saint John. Dr. Joseph Andrews married twice but as far as I know did not have any children. I have a copy of a newspaper obituary for him which appeared in the St. John Standard, Thursday, February 22, 1917. Unfortunately it sheds no light on his parents. Joseph Sr's wife Jane, my gg-grandmother, also had a death notice appear in the Daily Telegraph: Daniel F Johnson : Volume 63 Number 2181 Date : December 9, 1885 Place : Saint John Newspaper : The Daily Telegraph d. Truro, N.S., 8th inst., Jane Armour ANDREWS relict of Joseph ANDREWS, 70th year. Funeral from her residence Paradise Row, Saint John, Thursday half past 2 o'clock. I have never located obituaries for either Joseph (senior) or Jane Andrews. For that matter, I think the only obituary I have is the one for son Joseph -- none for any of the four daughters. It strikes me as fairly unlikely that an obit for one of the children would be very helpful. On the other hand, it would be fantastic if obits could be found for either Joseph Sr or Jane. The James Hannay transcriptions of the Rural / Fernhill Cemetery contains the following record: In loving memory of Joseph Andrews died Apr 12th 1885 aged 85 years His wife Jean Armour died Dec 5th 1885 aged 74 years Thanks again, John Cordes On [2011-03-25 at 07:45pm] John Elliott <elliojo@nb.sympatico.ca> wrote: > Hi, > > Don't have anything on the marriage, but the "Burial Records of the > Church of England Cemetery" (Thorne Ave., Saint John), published 1987 by > Lennox Bagnell include the following burials. > > Andrews, Jane, Widow 1 Nov. 1847 48 yrs > Andrews, Joseph 7 April 1879 35 yrs Rev. I am looking for the marriage of Edward (Edouard) Vienneau to Agnes Aube. I believe she may be the same Agnes Aube married to George Theriault earlier. She can be found having children with Edouard in Bathurst in 1888, in the provincial archives of N.B. Thanks Dick Aubé
Hi, Don't have anything on the marriage, but the "Burial Records of the Church of England Cemetery" (Thorne Ave., Saint John), published 1987 by Lennox Bagnell include the following burials. Andrews, Jane, Widow 1 Nov. 1847 48 yrs Andrews, Joseph 7 April 1879 35 yrs Rev. Armstrong, St. Marks - buried in the Poor ground Andrews, Joseph 15 May 1880 Removed from Poor Ground to rural Cemetery (now Fernhill) There are a few other Andrews burials there, but not many. The records of Brenan's Funeral Home (online at PANB website) include a Joseph Andrews from Ireland who was a doctor - same one?? Have you looked at Dan Johnson's "Vital Statistics From New Brunswick Newspapers" online also at the PANB site? Hi John - The New Brunswick Archives has a number of small articles abt the family of Joseph Andrews - New Brunswick Newspaper Statistics. It said that his wife had died in Truro, Nova Scotia but I have not been able to find a death record for her which might have given more information on where she was born in Ireland. http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/FullTextResults.aspx?culture=en-CA NB Archives also has Brenan's Funeral Home records - there were burials for 2 of Joseph & Jane's children. http://archives.gnb.ca/Irish/Databases/Brenan/SearchResults.aspx?culture=en-CA&index=2&years=1901-1961&data=TsqIiQ9Ma7lLnApb7RWdg1mHONLos4OsKh8FncCnjro = I noticed also that there were 2 other women also named Armour on the Brenan records who might be related? Armour is not a common name. There are quite a few listings as well in the newspaper for Armour - perhaps some clues: http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/NewspaperVitalStats/FullTextResults.aspx?culture=en-CA I know you're looking for theirr marriage but have you found all of their children's obituaries and death records? because there may be clues in those. The Saint John Free Library "send us a question" is very helpful for obits. Hi Margaret, Thanks very much for giving it a try -- this is greatly appreciated. I don't believe the John Andrews name is of my family. I only mentioned the name of Jane Andrews, who married John Lee Olive, because she was the earliest child for whom I have a record. My own great-grandmother was Annie Andrews, born 1850 in Saint John to Joseph Andrews and Jane Armour. Depending on how comprehensive the book may be, this increases the likelihood that Joseph Andrews and Jane Armour may have married in Ireland before coming to New Brunswick. It's back to banging against the brick wall for me, I'm afraid. Hello, I was not aware of this book, and am wondering how comprehensive it may be. I have tried very hard to search for a marriage record for my gg-grandparents Joseph Andrews and Jean/Jane Armour; my searches were mostly in records at the archives in Fredericton. The couple were living in Saint John (Portland) at least by 1843, where their first child (probably) Jane Andrews was born; Jane married John Lee Olive. Both Joseph Andrews and Jean/Jane Armour get listed in census records showing Irish ethnicity. Their children (4 girls and 1 boy) are all married in Anglican ceremonies.
