    1. Re: [ NB ] Howard Crawford, b1885, Queens
    2. Jared Handspicker
    3. Howard Alexander Crawford, b. 28-Aug-1883, Canada, per 1917 WWI Draft registration, m. Vira Mae Neal, and died 18-Oct-1951, in Maine, USA. He was SUPPOSEDLY a son of Judson B. Crawford, so a very interesting puzzle!!! I'm thinking, when he listed Judson as POC on his WWI Draft Reg, he was referrring to his brother. The Howard shown as son of Joseph, was b. 28-Aug-1885, per 1901 census. he had a BROTHER named Judson, but a son of Joseph. The Howard in question (son of Joseph and Eliza) appears with his family in 1891 census for Canning, Queens Co, NB, and, again in 1901, he is still in Canning. Joseph b. NB 25-Aug-1832 Eliza(beth) b. 08-May-1838, NB On his WWI Draft Registration, he listed Judson B. Crawford of Minto, N.B. as his nearest relative. He (Howard) was living in Waterville, Kennebec Co, ME in 1917/18 timeframe. Some family trees listed Howard as son of Judson B., and listed his POB as Ontario, but that doesn't fit with any Ontario records. He surely married Vira Mae Neal on 05-Mar-1919 in Maine. 1930 US Census for Portland, Cumberland Co, ME: Head Howard Crawford M 44 Spouse Vira Crawford F 38 Child Howard Crawford M 10 Child Clarence Crawford M 8 Child Hazel Crawford F 6 Child Margaret Crawford F 4 Child Mildred Crawford F 1 Shows he came to US in 1910, which would fit with not being listed in 1911 census. Name: Howard A. CRAWFORD (son) Date of Death: Tuesday, 28 Nov. 1989 Place of Death: Portland, Me. Age: 70 years VIra was b. 1892, Waterville, ME She first married to Fred D. Stevens, on 23-Nov-1912, Oakland, Kennebec Co, ME. She was d/o Benjamin F. Neal and Mary F. UNK. > Was his wife's name Vira? If so , he went to Maine in 1910. 3. My ancestor, Simon Graham, drowned 30 July 1834 in the Saint John River at the Reversing Falls while taking produce by boat to market. I don't find him listed in Daniel Johnson's index to newspapers on the NB Provincial Archives website. Would like to know if Saint John newspapers for that time are indexed anywhere. Are microfilms available? Thank you. Shirley Smith Hi Patsy, If you are looking for an archived newspaper site and are prepared to pay a subscription you might want to look at: https://paperofrecord.hypernet.ca/papers.asp which is a page on the (new / returned) Paper of Record site which lists the papers they provide digital access to. This "collection" has a long history (for an electronic resource, which I won't go into here) but was - is (?) primarily a Canadian operation and so has quite a lot of Canadian papers. My (fairly superficial) impression of the Newspaper Archive Collection was that it was primarily a US collection which included other papers from the rest of the World (including Canada.) i would suggest you "compare & contrast" the two sites to see which one would fit your needs best. Incidentally, I have no interest (financial or otherwise) in either of these companies other than in trying to keep up to date with the other genealogy data supply companies. 3. Its not a scam but in 2 years of subscribing I found almost nothing of genealogical interest and as of today have let my subscription lapse. Check out the locations of their holdings before you decide; i think some areas are better served than the rest. 3. Hi Betty, I just took a look at the birth records - there are 2 - one an original county birth and the other a late birth registration - for John Howard Harris's brother, Frederick Burton Harris, and it shows the last name of the mother to be ROWAN (found on New Brunswick Archives website & familysearch.org). 3. Hello,   After I posted my query yesterday morning, very helpful researchers wrote to offer more information for me.    It seems that John Howard HARRIS  was the son of  John HARRIS and Fannie -  ROLLINS or ROANS or ROWANS or RALLANS.     We have found at least 6 spellings of this surname in the records.     It's possible that the ROANS  name was the original name.     I have to do more on-line looking today to see if I can find out when the ROANS name first appeared in New Brunswick.      However, we did find that a William ROANS was born in England ~1794.     And the families were in York County.     William married Mary Alicia McLEAN, b1799  (CAN?), and they had 9 children.   And,  John and Fannie HARRIS seem to have had only 3 sons.    They seem to have had twin-sons,  John H. and Judson M.?  HARRIS, b1876  (1878?) in N.B.   and then Fredrick M. HARRIS, b1879/80.       Fannie, as a widow?, and her children are found in the 1901 census in St. Mary's.        But, the 1900 US census has son, John, in Houlton, ME.      It seems that  John Howard HARRIS and  Marian "Aurelia" KIDDER moved around a lot.     They might have had 4 children, born in both places,  but the 1910 census shows only 2 surviving children,  son, Fredrick HARRIS, b1904, and daughter, Daisy HARRIS, b1906.   Mrs. "Rilla" KIDDER was born ~1882 in Princeton, Maine,  and John HARRIS was born in Fredericton, N.B.    And there is some information on his brothers.    But, there is still no information on where John went after leaving his wife in Maine ~1915.   Mrs. Fannie HARRIS died in York Co. in 1924,  and she seems to have had siblings living near her.     The ROANS children seem to have been born in the 1830's and 1840's timeframe.       That's all I'll say for this morning.     I haven't finished summarizing all the information I was offered yesterday.   Betty               (near Lowell, MA, USA)     (on Lists for 10 yrs.;  now an Admin for 9 Lists, including  CORKILL  and  GAVIN   and  LAURENTIDES)
