    3. The 1851 census images are on line at http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1851/index-e.html According to Craig Walsh's site http://webhome.idirect.com/~cpwalsh/nb/censusacts.htm#1824 there were earlier census in NB . . . *1824, 1834, 1840 Censuses of New Brunswick* (Click here <http://webhome.idirect.com/%7Ecpwalsh/nb/acts/5GeoIVc21.htm> for text of 1824 Act.) The first three acts - 1824, 1834, and 1840 - were virtually identical. They instructed the Justices of the Peace in each county to appoint one or more enumerators for each civil parish. If a parish had more than one enumerator, then the parish was to be divided into districts. The enumerators were to count the number of people of each sex, age group, and race, and return their figures to the county's Clerk of the Peace. No fixed date was specified to conduct the census, but December 1 was the deadline for returning the forms. The acts only required aggregate figures for each parish and did not make any explicit demand for a list of names of inhabitants. In looking through the Charlotte County Guide as to what is available on microfilm at the Provincial Archives (PANB), I don't see any enumerations listed for these years. However, I do know that Grand Manan had a census for 1821 and is available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbgrandm/Census/1821pg1.htm Marilyn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AEP wrote: > The earliest NB census is 1851 (not yet on-line).

    3. Hello Jim The earliest census (over all) for NB is 1851, but there are random census type records earlier. see http://www.rootsweb.com/~cannb/NB_Census.htm for a complete listing. As for the Merrill name, this is most common in the Westmorland County area, although may well be found in other areas of NB. I have a brief record of a Loyalist family named Morrell in Kings Co. I can send it if you are interested. The only James noted is a John/James ? / cabinet maker / NY / 20 / Bridgewater / 11133* at NY & on arrival at Saint John (David Bell's Early Loyalist of Saint John) * means 1 man, 1 woman, 1 child over (10 or 16 can't remember now), 3 children under that age, and 3 servants (usually slaves). Note: I think you have a typo in Joshua's age (1884-ish) shouldn't it be 1848-ish? 3. Hi Jim, If you believe a man b. 1794 fathered a child in 1884, I think, blind faith or not, you'd better invest in some DNA testing.<g> Did you mean to type that Joshua was b.c. 1844 and not c. 1884? If the family had moved to Maine by the 1840s, they will not be on a NB census. The first was 1851. I, too would like to know where the 1861 census is available through PANB. Did you find transcripts somewhere else? For 1861, there is a transcript of one small ward in (now) west Saint John on the NB GenWeb site, but that's it. I'd like to know where the original was found because to my knowledge, that is the only part of the Saint John Co. census that is known to exist. Why did it, alone, survive? 3. Jim, The short answer is "anywhere but Quebec." However, there was confusion among some of the census-takers and they recorded "Canada Eng." or "Canada Fr." depending on what language the people spoke. The best thing you can do is look for others in the area who came from Canada and see whether the response recorded on the form seems to be based on language or province of origin. As for the children, if you havent already done so, it would be best to consult the 1900 census for Cary, Maine and both the 1850 and 1860 Washington County enumerations. 1. [ NB ] CD entitled "New Brunswick in the 1940's" available
    2. Malcolm Moody
    3. On this CD we are bringing you complete copies of two useful books from the 1940's. The first is the Telephone directory for Western New Brunswick for July 1947, one of the few available resources for finding people living in the area between one and two generations ago. The other is "An Historical Guide to New Brunswick" and was published as an incentive to tourist travel in 1942. The thing to do while vacationing in the 1940's was to "see the sights" and this mostly involved visiting the historic sights and buildings of the area. There is still an echo of this in the activities of todays vacationer but the tourist trade today relies more on enjoying some modern entertainment which happens to take place at an historic site rather than just going there to visit "the stones." This guide then was provided by the New Brunswick Government Bureau of Information and Tourist Travel, in 1942, for the potential tourist so he would know where to go and what to look for when he got there. Liberally illustrated with maps, and photographs of the spots of interest, today it provides us with a, not to strenuous, history of New Brunswick, indexed by the places where the events which shaped the province took place. The Telephone Directory is a normal household directory, giving name, address and phone number, and was provided to it's subscribers by the New Brunswick Telephone Company, Limited, of Fredericton. It provides 112 pages of listings for private and commercial subscribers on 35 exchanges, 2 of which were actually in Maine, USA, and 5 of which were owned and operated by other Canadian telephone companies. The full list of exchanges is too long to print here but we have provided a sampler of the CD on the free Downloads page on our web site which includes the page listing the exchanges so you can see them just as they were originally printed. Major exchanges are Fredericton, Edmunston, and Woodstock. In addition to the regular subscribers directory there is also a 26 page Classified Directory (a Yellow Pages) giving a listing of thousands of local businesses, tradesmen, and professionals - we estimate over a hundred listings per page. Both the Telephone Directory and the Historical Guide are fully text searchable and we have optimized the search speed by enabling our FastFind enhancement on the CD Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. 2. Marilyn Morrow
    3. Would SKS do a lookup for me please? In 1881, Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Morrow (b. circa 1845) is residing with her parents Thomas and Margaret Morrow in Westfield, Kings County. Father died Jan 1895 and mother died 1899, so both should be present in the 1891 census. Is Eliza still living with them? By the date of her death in 1923 Eliza had become Mrs. Haynes/Haines, but I can't find a record of that marriage, so I'm trying to narrow the window. Death certificate completed by her brother says she lived her entire life in N.B., -- perhaps she did not marry until she was too old to have children? Any help greatly appreciated. I came across an interesting site that may be of help to others. On this site you can look up an address, town, county etc. It will give you an map by roads, aerial view or both. You may even get "driving" directions by either way too. I found this tool useful looking at how far apart family members were living. It includes the whole world! You can save your "maps" if you sign up (free) I printed a few maps to add to my ancestry notebook. Hope someone else will find this site helpful too.
